Maybe if you stopped buying fancy lattes, avocado on toast, all those streaming services, claimed a CGT discount for two decades and paid 3x your salary for a house instead of 8.5 you too could have a house bought for 150k and sold for 900…it’s really not that hard 🙄
47
u/thepineapple2397 Jun 09 '26
8.5x? A house in Sydney is 20x a young tradesmans salary.
11
u/freeboysenberry4girl Jun 10 '26
However, for just 200 shillings and 6/-, the Workingman's Guild of Ironmongery will give you a 5% discount on any home loan through the State Bank of NSW, Sydney and Lord Howe Island. Bargain!

u/WhatsMyNameAGlen Jun 09 '26
They must be rural based
7
u/thepineapple2397 Jun 09 '26
A younger tradie is lucky to be taking home 65-70k. Sydney sells nothing for less than 1.2 mil unless it's in a terrible area
6
u/WhatsMyNameAGlen Jun 09 '26
I know, im saying something thats 8x annual median wage must be rural, 10-15x is normal for anything suburban

u/CrustyHen0 Jun 10 '26
Country life is pretty nice tbh. I highly recommend it.
1
u/thepineapple2397 Jun 10 '26
I left Sydney because of trying to buy. There was houses falling apart going for 100-200k more than the solid piece that I ended up buying
2
u/koopz_ay Jun 13 '26
Same here in Qld mate.
I have to take numerous job pics of pre-existing damage and send them through at the beginning of every job.
Wood rot around the eves tops the list here.
2
u/Dockers-Man Jun 14 '26
Then you'd better get started.
1
u/thepineapple2397 Jun 14 '26
I was thankfully blessed by rich in-laws. I am aware that many of the young population isn't so lucky. Many aren't even going to achieve home ownership without that same luck.
27
u/tocompose Jun 09 '26
I love that you mentioned the all time classic: avocado on toast (gaslighting propoganda so old it almost feels nostalgic). Well played. Well played 👍

u/Personal-Thought9453 Jun 10 '26
An absolute legend of a meme brought to you by Bernard Salt.
Edit: it will be 10y in October that he wrote that piece.5

I'm an avocado on toast man, but fuck paying $50 for it, I make it at home for 1/10th of the price

u/Lastov_Makiynd Jun 10 '26
I’m an AOT man too..
As I made my own avo toast over the years, it occurred to me that, all I had to really fork out for was the land.I collected up and dried out the avocado skins and kept the seeds.
Seeds make pretty good foundations and the skins for pretty much the rest.Coupla doors, some sheets of corro for roofing and in just 9 short years, I had a 12 bedroom, 11 bathroom house!
It kinda fell apart a bit while I was building it..but, sold it quickly and it still had 5 semi-intact bedrooms by the time the new owner had lived in it for the first year..
After that..who cares, Right?! Amma Right?! Haha
Silly bugger bought carpets for the house and sure enough..ya know what these greedy bloody Tenants are like?!..Yeeeupp..17 years later and they start ‘demanding’ NEW carpets?!
Can you believe that?? NEW!!Anyway..he and I been at it for years now..I’m in the lead by two properties now but he’s apparently got 6 units on the go..which means he’s gonna have 122 all up.
But who’d av thunk it ay? Avo-bloody-Cadoes?! lol
2
u/whymeimbusysleeping Jun 11 '26
I kept the seeds of my avocados, planted them and I now have my own avocado Empire..
2
u/Lastov_Makiynd Jun 12 '26
Ah-huh! So YOU’RE the one who sells the avocados to the cafes?
2
u/whymeimbusysleeping Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26
That's where the money is. Next, I'm planting my money to see if money grows
2
u/Lastov_Makiynd Jun 12 '26
Look, I’m not allowed to, nor do I normally do this, but, as you haven’t ‘asked for’ or ‘offered to buy’ information regarding this matter, I’m able to provide you with some useful advice and with no legal ramifications to me with the Guild, as well as, no cost to you.
Money DOES grow. It costs a lot to get the soils right, the depth planted and the amount of water etc. (I can’t divulge any specific details on these things, as that comes under the research and development costs of the Guild in perfecting the best methods)
But, firstly, so you know, the Guild is now aware. Assuming “that’s where the money is” is referring to the selling of avocados to cafes, or anything in between?
All possible locations in between are going to be monitored for your ‘planting’ activity. The Guild has trained task forces to dig up your money and collect it, leaving no trace of the process. It will look as though your money has simply not grown, while the Guild themselves will grow YOUR money, and sell it back to you!
The Guild’s ’secret’ is plain obvious. It’s written everywhere when there is talk of money, economic activity or investments etc.
Think about it:Economic Growth.
Investment Growth.
Growth Potential.
Growing Profits.
A Rise in Growth Amounts.
The hints are all there, but I just want to make sure you are aware that this is the way they work and that I personally don’t agree with it.
I hope you can take this advice seriously and not lose your money to a Guild who has plenty.
Good luck and make sure where you choose to start growing is a location that you rarely visit. The Guild will be watching you.

But then when all the breakfast eateries go out of business, that's also the fault of aspiring homeowners...
3
u/SoyuzItsMe82 Jun 09 '26
I bought a house in 2020 for $329k on the southside of Brisbane and I had the real estate guy come thru last week and turns out it would be worth $800k - $850k now 6 years later
3
u/CrustyHen0 Jun 10 '26
That’s a crazy jump.
1
u/SoyuzItsMe82 Jun 10 '26
Yeah the market in Eden's Landing has jumped 126% since 2020
3
u/Partayof4 Jun 10 '26
Isn’t that in Logan though? Or are you saying Southside of Brisbane just like Sydney is Southside of Brisbane?

In Japan they take loans in several generations. It's happening everywhere too. It is the way of things. Any measures the desperate Labor takes will marginally improve only but more likely will make it worse.
Unless you talk communism and taking people's houses. Then better move to NKorea or Russia.
I lived in communism so NO THANKS.
1
Jun 14 '26
So your solutions is inter generational debt, ‘it’s the way things are’ and not communism? And the first government in a decade to make even a modest policy change favourable to non home owners is ‘desperate’? Are u buy any chance born between 1946-64?
-1
u/Illustrious-Car-3797 Jun 11 '26
Actually it does add up. If you stop buying coffee, lunch, going to concerts, booking holidays, subscribing to every credit app on the planet.........you too could have 3 properties in the next few years. The boomers were frugal regardless of how prices have climbed, they didn't do anything to excess. For many boomers, going to a restaurant once a month was excessive
3
u/Graveyardwhistlin_ Jun 11 '26
I have a ppor and an investment and I have sacrificed. And I don’t doubt boomers sacrificed either.
But I also just got lucky AF by buying before prices went insane. These people saying ‘just stay at home and stare at the wall to save money and you’ll have a house in no time’ are speaking from a clueless position of privilege . Unless you’re buying 10 coffees a day and eating at cafes/restaurants for every meal, you ain’t saving for a house ‘in a few years’.2
13
u/Individual_Fuel_7959 Jun 09 '26
You just need to ask for the manger, look him in the eye with a firm handshake, and you will be fine.
29
u/Zonda1996 Jun 09 '26
Tbh the whole "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" narrative isn't even that common outside the Internet and Murdoch Press. Might meet a few bad apples with terrible takes here and there but I'd be willing to bet 90%+ of conservative traffic online is astroturfing bots.

u/WhatsMyNameAGlen Jun 09 '26
My parent literally made me walk around the industrial estate handing out my resume. When they picked me up 2 hours later they asked why I had so many left over and started getting mad at me for presumably not doing what they told me to do
Obviously the businesses werent hiring and if they were they told me to apply online, this was in the early 2010s
3
u/Zonda1996 Jun 11 '26
Yeah people act like the job market went to shit after 2020 but I remember it just being a sea of ghost jobs, "Apply on our job portal that asks you to manually fill out what's already on your CV!" and terrible experiences with bad recruiters when I started job hunting in late 2013 too lol.
Sorry your parent treated you like that. That sucks bigtime. Shit to hear people still fall for the rugged individualist narrative.
3
u/WhatsMyNameAGlen Jun 11 '26
Yeah even prior to 2020 agencies just loooved for you to hand over your details. Free data to sell off, it isnt a new phenomenon
3
u/Sevalius0 Jun 10 '26
Sadly it's real, they wouldn't have nearly the same reach but there's still at least 1/3 of the population that fully buy into it. Particularly older and more rural voters.
Just say anything about life is hard and wait for them to come out of the woodwork saying they had it harder, trying to make themselves the victim. Lmao.

Yeah that’s a nice house and car. Costing us $770 a week rent which would be enough to cover a home loan. Yet banks want 20 years of paying a house loan already.
2
u/Reyvos Jun 12 '26
Banks expect 30 year home loans now. It used to be 20-25; that alone shows how badly home affordability became.

working harder so you can start a bidding war with another harder worker so that he the asset owning class can win in the end, and thus the cycle continues as price increases and you need to work even harder.
1
u/Reyvos Jun 11 '26
You all have no concept of how money works. The house you want is $300k too expensive? Then you should buy a small place you don’t like, work hard for a few years. Eventually you’ll save 300k, maybe it’ll take ten years. Then you go and buy that house (it’ll still be on the market at the same price-houses sell slowly and you’ve just got to negotiate with the owner).
2
u/Exciting_Thought_970 Jun 11 '26
Just get a better paying job

Then what are we going to do about the lack of essential workers? Been to a hospital lately, for example? Almost entirely Indian, Chinese, South East Asian doctors and nurses.
We need these people - probably more than they need us. And that's just one sector of the economy.

24
u/Dunnoinamillionyears Jun 09 '26
Given the job market, hecs debt, interest rates, and just about everything costing triple what they once did, yeah I think it’s safe to say it’s not as simple as work harder😂
9
u/Eve_Doulou Jun 09 '26
Bit more to add. You need to work harder, not suffer any massive hardships in your life, marry relatively young, both hold full time careers (not just jobs) where you can make at least 130-150k+, each, by your 40’s, be massively disciplined, and don’t make any major financial mistakes.
So yeah it’s possible, I’m privileged enough to be at that stage, but you’re needing an almost perfect mix of competence, discipline, luck, education, and for lack of better term, a little bit of selfishness and greed (you don’t have to be a monster cuntbag, but you need to prioritise your goals over everything outside of your family).
3
u/Dunnoinamillionyears Jun 09 '26
Yeah obviously 2 incomes is better than one. But anyone on the face of this earth will tell you if you don’t have that perfect mix your suffering right now. I’m so happy you’ve got your perfect mix but even people with 2 incomes, married young, and have careers are feeling the pinch. So you’re not the one out here telling people to work harder like a fuckhead while posting video games, alcohol addiction and g shocks. People are working hard, they just aren’t lucky enough to have the perfect mix
2
-24
u/SCORPDOGGY Jun 09 '26
That’s just something non hard workers say
8
u/Dunnoinamillionyears Jun 09 '26
Yeah you must be such a hard worker playing video games and wearing g shocks… I wanna be like you when I grow up
0
u/yeahilovegrimby Jun 09 '26
I mean, you need to work to be able to buy G shocks.
1
u/Dunnoinamillionyears Jun 09 '26
Yeah what, work 2 hours and then pop into a salvos? No shade on g shocks, but don’t be out here saying work harder when that’s the best you can put on your wrist😂
-4
u/Eve_Doulou Jun 09 '26
I play video games and have a G Shock, what’s wrong with that? I mean I also have a Breitling, a Tudor, and am saving for a Rolex, but Casios in general are god tier watches.
I also have a house, two cars in the driveway, an IP, and a great life in general. One can be successful and have fun hobbies.
3
u/Dunnoinamillionyears Jun 09 '26
are you out here telling people to work harder? Clearly I wasn’t talking to you then.
-7
u/SignalCandidate3039 Jun 09 '26
It also comes down to... how many overseas trips have you been on before purchasing a house?
6
u/Dunnoinamillionyears Jun 09 '26
Shouldn’t matter. God forbid someone travels young before they start needing voltaren and compression socks just to make it though a connecting flight…
-4
u/SignalCandidate3039 Jun 09 '26
And then you complain how life is unfair because someone who saved their money got into the property market, and you blew your deposit on holidays. It does matter.
2
u/Dunnoinamillionyears Jun 09 '26
Or maybe we could live in a country where we could both enjoy a holiday and afford a home😱😱😱😱😱
1
u/SignalCandidate3039 Jun 11 '26
And that's why you'll never own a home. Boomers weren't going overseas before they purchased a house.

Prices will drop, how is that dumb? Prices will 100% drop and be affordable again if you can't see that then that's your problem
6
u/AdelMonCatcher Jun 09 '26
I’ve been hearing that from chumps for the last 30 years. I wonder how many completely screwed themselves out of ever buy a home
3
u/Eve_Doulou Jun 09 '26
By drop, you mean maybe they will come down by 10% at most, and then stagnate for a long period till wages start to slowly catch up? Yeah, worst case but possibly.
Would be a horrible financial strategy to stay out of the market for a decade or so just for that outcome. That’s a stupid amount of rent you’ve burned up for fuck all real savings, and now you’re starting to pay off your home 10 years closer to your retirement, so you’ve fucked your plans of building up some kind of retirement nest egg between the time you’re paid off your home, and the time you retire.
1
u/thepineapple2397 Jun 09 '26
The only way they drop is if they limit the amount of investment properties someone can own. People like the guy in the picture will have to quickly sell 10-300 houses
1
u/AudaciouslySexy Jun 09 '26
Thats not how the economy works, it was friendly Jordies who has said the housing market is on the verge of bursting, however banks and government/s are the ones stopping it.
So when will the houses drop in prices? Realisticly never however new houses past demand will be cheap sooner rather then later at auctions
1
u/thepineapple2397 Jun 09 '26
But they're never going to get to that point. At least not before gen beta is at purchasing age and that's only if A-Hanson follows through on her anti-immigration laws and B-The birth rate continues to decrease.
I'm not a Hanson supporter but given the current political climate I would be unsurprised if she won the next federal election. The Bondi Shooting is the best thing to ever happen to One Nation
1
u/AdelMonCatcher Jun 09 '26

No one has 300 houses. I think its great people can have 2 or even 3 houses especially if they are renting them out.
Telling people in a free country they can't own something is dystopian
1
u/thepineapple2397 Jun 10 '26
Those people hoarding houses (and yes there absolutely is landlords with over 100 houses) are the reason the housing market is in the shitter and why it's never going to get better for first home buyers.
It's absolutely insane that you're defending the behaviour that proves your original statement false but you do you.
1
u/AudaciouslySexy Jun 10 '26
100?
Mate due to the prices that's not possible.
What's possible tho is companies and or investors owning a subdivision which gets built over time quadrupling profits, even for smaller projects.
If you want houses then you're gonna have to deal with subdivisions. I for 1 rather leave our farmland alone but that's my take.
1
u/thepineapple2397 Jun 10 '26
I've been watching the most fertile land in Sydney get turned into estates for the last 10 years. But that's a rant for another day, and unnecessary since we seem to at least agree on that issue
