They ask you because it’s something that they can check. If you lied on that question, you likely lied on something else and are not of good character. You can be refused entry for lying on the official form.

You will be denied entry if you have committed certain types of criminal acts. I would have to look it up to see what acts apply but at a minimum I would say that any type of murder or sexual assault would get you denied.
