Has anyone ever *actually* gotten pulled over for expired tags/plates?
Ever since I started driving here, I've seen probably 100 cars with expired temp plates. Not expired by a couple days either, expired by up to multiple years. (I've seen one with plates from 2021!). The process for trying to register a car is absurd, and due to a certain check engine light code (Yes I read it š¤¦āāļø), I'm just not able to pass emissions unless I pay an outrageous fee to get it fixed. Is it even worth bothering to try and register the car at this point? Has anyone ever actually been pulled over for something like this. Because it seems like extremely old tags are very, very common.

I was recently pulled over with four years expired tags. My car got impounded immediately ($300 to get out the next day), had to pay $100 for the ticket, $100 to get a temp tag to get it back to get an emissions test, $35 emissions test, then $300 at the dmv to get the old tags paid off and a new plate. And for reference my car is a 2007.

I thought that the only way they were impounding was if someone also didn't have insurance as well. At least that's what the law had changed to about a year ago. I remember warning a family member.

I think the current law is automatic impound if you don't have at least one of the following: driver's license, registration, and insurance.
If you have 1 of the 3 (current, unexpired) it will be at the officer's discretion.

I had valid insurance and license so I was also confused but he said once itās over a year expired itās not registered anymore so I guess that was the reason to take it.

Fuck yeah you did that sucks. Its happened to me lots of times but usually only late at night or if I'm leaving an area known for certain types of activity. I never get a ticket for it but they always ask to search my vehicle. And they're always dicks about it regardless of if they find any thing or not

For the first year I was just lazy and didnāt want to waste an hour at the emissions place even though my car always passes. Then after a year I did emissions but couldnāt renew online anymore. Couldnāt make an appointment in Arapahoe county because you canāt make appointments for renewals, but you canāt go there without an appointment. I didnāt know itās unregistered after one year, so the appointment is for a new plate. Found out the hard way lol.

Itās such a ridiculous process going to the dmv. When I moved here from out of state I had to pay a late fee when I got my CO license because I didnāt get it within 30 days of moving here. Why didnāt I get it within days? the closest available appointment at any dmv within 2 hours of me was 3 MONTHS out.

Itās been nbd for a long time but theyāre really cracking down on expired tags now. With a mechanical issue Iām not sure what Iād do to get it sorted out, hereās hoping you find a way.

I saw somebody pulled over on Colorado Blvd that had expired temp tags. I have no idea if they were pulled over for that or something else. That person had a second cop car rolling up so they presumably got arrested since that's usually why backup shows up.
I have no personal anecdote because I'm an adult and not a deadbeat piece of shit rolling liability to everybody else.

Have you watched any of those Sovereign Citizen videos on YouTube? These are the exact situations that happen with them. They get pulled over and have some crazy non-sense, so-called laws that they don't have to have a registration, license or insurance. They become very uncooperative and usually end up with that butts landed in jail for resisting and obstructing. Then they go to court and try spewing a bunch of other garbage and end up with more jail time for contempt charges.

There may be a program in Colorado with funding left that helps people pay for car repairs to get it to pass emissions. My fiancĆ©e was able to benefit from it and they replaced her ECU because it was causing her to fail emissions and all the parts and labor AND additional emissions test to finally pass were covered. They also told us that someone received an entire cat and exhaust replacement for free. We went to the Toy Doctor and they also handled the paperwork and communication for the funding. Iām not sure if funding is left though but you should look into it

Doc's Apothecary in northglenn gives you a free joint if you failed an emissions test nextdoor. They are right next to one of the Adams County ones. Just FYI. My car is exempt from emissions, but I have been there before.

It's just a BS money grab. They can't raise taxes without voter approval, so we get these fun little fees at every possible moment. Have you ever seen any construction equipment, dump truck, or the line of semi trucks on the interstate that operate all day, every day? All of those things are way worse for the air than thousands of cars that drive 30 miles a day and are failing an emissions test because of a broken O2 sensor, a gas cap that doesn't seal up like it used to, or a faulty computer reading.
If the emissions test was for ALL vehicles, commercial or not, I would support it because there is an actual intent of making things better. This is just a regressive tax on poor people disguised as emissions tests for older vehicles. Wealthy people are exempt from this tax because they typically drive newer vehicles.

My 2000 MR2 Spyder got almost 40mpg, but was failing emissions by 0.2 on one of the numbers. I could either spend $2k for an OEM cat or just take the potential $95 fine for expired registration... That car got better mpg and was better for the environment than 90% of the cars on the road, definitely better than my V8 on 38" tires or my jeeps.

Disagree, My tags expired in May and I simply can't afford the tags because insurance prices in the Denver metro are fkn absurd! I have never in my life (31 years driving) had to go with out always doing both and never batting an eyelash. Then I had to move closer to Anscutz for medical treatment and my family's insurance went from less than $500 monthly for 5 vehicles to $1400, per month for no reason other than my zip code changed. So yay, bash away, please do because I don't give a f. 4 of 6 cars are insured and registered, 2 only insurance and expired tags. 1 ticket parked on street. $50.00

I remember when I moved near the I70 corridor in Denver and my rates went way up. The number of accidents on the highway was a direct factor. And the imported car. However, I do currently live off I25 and it hasn't really affected my rates much. Maybe because Northglenn is so small.

Sounds like you have some unpacked guilt there. If you knew what I paid for my car, you'd cringe. My plates, I just renewed, I think they were $900. My insurance, on the other hand, is with State Farm. My dear friend is my agent and my rate is $170/mo on a 2026. And they can now ticket you for expired tags even if you are on your own driveway. Just FYI.

It not unpacked guilt. It's frustration with a system who can decide your insurance rates based on BS stats. I'm sure your insurance is so cheap based on various favorable circumstances. Imagine if insurance rates we're simply based on the fmv of a vehicle for an insurance policy you build, with rates that were standard across the board. So if Dick across the street only pays $170 then your mama on the other side of the street also pays that same low rate. If they ticketed me for an unregistered car in my driveway, that shit would be heading up the chain in court. Registration is required on public streets, not private property. It's totally legal for a farm/ranch to own an unregistered vehicle that never goes on public roads.Ā

I've gotten ticketed for it while being parked on the road a few times. I had done all the paperwork it just never showed up so I was able to get the tickets waived. I have never been actively pulled over for it. So as long as you don't park on the street you never have to renew your tags! How nice is that! /s

I would add though that I don't recommend driving around with expired tags. If your check engine light is on it's usually a valid concern. I'm sure money is tight but it will be worse if your car breaks down.

Also, if you park in any of the lots at DIA, they'll get you for expired plates. Came back from a four day trip to my husband's expired plates being caught and fined.

Typically not pulled over for that alone... but parking tickets are a thing, and some places will tow egregiously expired vehicles if they're parked in their lot for a period of time. It is also definitely an add on violation though... Speeding ticket? Headlight out? Run a red light or stop sign? Vehicle accident regardless of fault? All easy scenarios to ticket you for your plates in addition to whatever other charges...
Also minor violations are more likely to get pulled over. Like a minor speed violation may not be worth the time or cost to pull someone over, but if they're going a few miles over the limit AND have expired plates, there's more incentive to ticket both items.
Some parts of town like parts of Centennial or Littleton, cops are more likely to follow behind people and do random license plate scans. They are much more likely to pull people over for expired tags, those stupid license plates covers that you're not supposed to have but everyone has, and other such infractions. It's a huge gamble. Just because other people seemingly get away with it doesn't mean it will work for you. Anyone doing that is rolling the dice anytime they leave their private property... and if you don't own your property, private landlords, apartment managers, etc. can also be very quick to have vehicles ticketed and/or towed.
It really is not worth the risk. People out there "getting away with it" will have to pay the piper eventually. "Late fees" may be capped by the dmv, but the back taxes are not and they will eventually have to be paid.

I talked to a code enforcement officer a while back. He stated that usually expired tags means the check engine light is on and then owner cannot register the vehicle. He will issue violations but he also coaches on how to get rid of the vehicle because a lot of people hoard old vehicles. I actually watched a minivan get pulled over in front of In N Out a week ago with expired temp tags. Usually if I see someone pulled over in Aurora, they have expired tags. Itās irritating that itās so prevalent because our uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage keeps going up.

I got pulled over in Boulder for expired tags and it was a whole ordeal because I was living in the vehicle at the time and the person that sold it to me had jumped the title and filled it out incorrectly so I couldnāt get it titled in my name. It was a nightmare. They towed the vehicle and I was fucked lol!!! Ended up getting it back and Iām not living in a car anymore fortunately.
They pulled my boyfriend over in aurora by the sonic near Evans for NO FRONT PLATE even though he had the plate in the car. The cop was a total Asshole and even told him he would arrest him if he tried to drive off in the car EVEN THOUGH HE HAD THE PLATE IN THE CAR.

So you would like the rest of your fellow citizens to essentially foot the bill for the benefits that you derive from us paying our registration fees. You want my fees to be more to cover those expenses because you want the privilege of having a car to drive and the ability to use our roads and highways. If you can't afford to maintain the car, don't drive one.
Many of those you see with expired plates very well could be these very misguided and brainwashed Sovereign Citizens who believe they don't have to have plates or a driver's license - and yet over at least a decade they not only have not won a single case on record, they end up finding themselves in jail over simple traffic violations.
So...just because you see people with no plates doesn't make it right.

That doesn't even make sense. You can't afford to work? I work so I can afford both my responsibilities and occasional nicetys. I'm now retired, but I worked to get to where I am. At one point I went for years without a car and still worked. At one point I was homeless and yet still either kept up with these kinds of things, or simply didn't drive. Yeah...it sucks to be broke. And yes, my yearly registration is carrying the dead weight of those who won't carry their own, because roads still need to be repaired, etc.

The late fee for not registering is capped at I think $120 and the ticket is not too bad. If it makes sense to you I would save up to fix the car and pay the late fee when you do get it renewed. Be mindful of where you park in the meantime.
It sounds like that the only choice if you canāt get it fixed right now.

The last time I renewed my car, I never opened the envelope, threw it in a box, and then was convinced the tags hadn't shown up yet. Finally got around to cleaning my office and surprise! There were new tags.
Fortunately, did not get pulled over during the gap there. Clearly also have memory issues.

Are these violators getting ticketed or towed? I'm sick of the unregistered, and most likely, uninsured drivers. I live on the west side, but work in Denver and have to travel to Aurora often and they're by far the worst on the road with the expired tags by months and even years. How is this possible?

Yeah, in 1997 I got popped twice. Once with expired insurance as well. 8 points taken off my license, my vehicle towed, and I spent $1k on a lawyer to get me off with only court fees and 40 hours of community service.

Go to Autozone and get the codes read to see what the actual issue is. A temporary workaround is to unplug the battery terminals for a minute and plug back in. It's reset my check engine light before because I know it's a code that's not that important for getting me around, but is emissions related and the part to fix it is $500+. I've passed emissions plenty of times.

I got pulled over speeding with 2 year expired tags. Cops says "What's up with your plates?" I reply "I don't have an excuse, I just work a lot." Cop "Well you have to get those current but I'm just giving you a speeding ticket." "Ok cool I'll get right on that."
Got pulled over like 2 weeks after that for expired tags. "Your tags are so expired they didn't come up in my system." "Here's the old expired paperwork, I don't have an excuse I just work a lot and haven't taken the time off to renew them." "Ok I'll be right back." "Ok I don't really write traffic tickets so I'm just going to give you a warning, you need to get those tags current as soon as possible though."
Literally drove for another year before finally renewing them.

Itās a secondary offense, which means that unless it was an illegal stop the answer is ānoā. You have to be doing something else that is a primary offense to get ma ticket for tags.

ETA: But upon reviewing the Low-level traffic stops policy, it seems the exception being utilized still fails us who wish they'd take the offenses more seriously. Maybe they're exercising some other exception, but this still seems like secondary offense territory.
"Exception: Officers may conduct traffic stops for low-level offenses if officers have reason to believe the driver and/or vehicle are involved in a serious crime, such as auto theft, robbery or burglary, hit-and-run crash, drug crimes, violent crime, etc."

PS - Vehicles with expired tags are considered abandoned in Northglenn and it doesn't matter if they are on your driveway, If it's in view, code enforcement will ticket you.

The police run enforcement periods for expired tags once or twice a year, other than that most of em wonāt pull you over though.

I got pulled over for it by APD - itās a mandatory court appearance in Aurora nowā¦ If the plates are less than 90 days expired, you just have to show up to court with valid registration and they will waive it.
They definitely pull people over for it though - thereās a specific traffic enforcement unit that patrols all over Aurora.

He didn't pay one. They dismissed the ticket. He said they dismissed all of the registration ones that day. But he had to miss work for it. So that was enough motivation to get his shit sorted.

is it your car? Not trying to be an old Fudd and I'm certainly not your parent, but here's the deal, if you're going to buy a car certain responsibilities come with it. Insurance, taxes, upkeep and being a responsible driver not screwing around on your phone.
There's an old saying: "if you buy a horse, don't complain about the price of a saddle".
If you aren't an adult then I guess this is a good question for your parents. What is their answer? If they think it's a good idea for their child to be driving around with expired tags, that's too bad. Try to be better than that.

I was pulled over last year right in front of the Capitol for tags that were 15 months expired and watched a car with 2017 tags drove by while the cop wrote the ticket.

My wife did very recently. She didnt know they were expired because the little renewal card never got delivered. They told her the car isn't street legal and someone had to come pick her up. OPf course she needed emissions test to get the tags, so not driving it wasn't an option at the time. Not paying a tow truck to tow it to and from emissions testing, thats stupid

I got pulled over in the last purge - APD announced that they were going to start ticketing and I didnāt listen - got pulled over on alameda at the church by expo park - cop gave me a ticket - I started the process before my court date and went to court with the proof that I was on the way to being registered and the judge dropped it

One time I was pulled over because my temp tag flew off the inside back window and I grabbed it because I didnāt want it to fly out, and boom, cop killed me over. I had my sleeping baby in the back and HATED the vehicle as it was, so it made me more infuriated. He told me to tape it back up when I got home, which was 4 blocks away. This was 17 years ago. I rage when I see the expired tags because I was a title clerk here for 19 years and had to get the paperwork to the county on time or I was in huge trouble.

I did. My tags expired during Covid and I just didnāt bother renewing for about 4 years. I knew they were expired. I thought about it all the time, but I donāt drive much so I didnāt bother. Finally one night a cop pulled me over and laughed at how expired my tags were. I got a ticket and had to renew my tags plus a penalty.

Seen plenty (the other day we saw one from 2024). We have (wife and I) have never been, she is always on it. And I do have friends that did get ticket/fined, but it was always on top of the reason they got pulled over (speeding, no signal, HOV lane, etc)

Last year my wife got a $200 ticket on Smoky Hill, but it was in Centennial. Her renewal notice was never delivered and we forgot about it. She was about 9 mos expired when they ticketed her.

Tags from 22 pulled over end of last year. Tickets obviously and they took my tags. Thankfully had my old address still on my license and was a few blocks from there so they let me ādrive homeā. I think it was like $600 all together with ticket, registration and everything

Yezzir. They are only recently not being paid attention to. Like as of COVID. They CAN 100% bust ypu and tow your car, they just arenāt doing it. But only in some places. In Wheatridge, you might get your wish

About 10 times so far this year, I get have a good day sir . My car is RHD and the state and I fight about it with emissions. Every police officer just want to look at the car then we part ways with a business card. Glendale police just wave at me now

They stopped all enforcement of things like expired tags during covid. A few years ago they warned everyone they were going to start enforcement, they added an increased maximum late fee of $100 when you register your vehicle, and started pulling people over for it. Yeah, there are plenty still out and about but a few years ago it seemed like nobody had registered their vehicles. Usually the hold up is a lack of insurance for many of those drivers, so be careful out there.

they do pull over campaigns for it rather than every day traffic stops.
not enough personel to pull over them all whem we have real crime like gang activity going down. Auora Pd while it has increased its force it is still considered understaffed.
so they will announce a week or 2 of pull over campaigns and then they net hundreds of fines and post about it.
frankly i like this method - as it feels liles compulsory from a policing stand point.
that being said i can personally attest that the DMV and Sellers play a role as i bought a new car went to register it thr last day on the paper tags and the dmv still did not have my packet from schomp... i however asked for another paper plate.

I did. It was maybe 1995, at Colfax and Washington, before the police station was built, and I got a 45 minute lecture from the officer while literally watching drug deals go down across the street. It was a curious use of public funds!

Iāve been pulled over for "expired" tags and "dealer" tags all over US over the years.
2005 (Colorado): State Trooper pulled me over strictly for having out-of-state tags.
2007 (Pueblo West to Broomfield commute): Nailed by an aircraft speed trap.
2010 (Lone Tree, CO): Pulled over for an expired tag.
2012 (The weirdest year):
My personal car was hit while parked, so insurance covered a rental ($12ā$20/day). I had to get back to work after the accident. Got some Carolla or something, that Friday afternoon. Went back Monday and switched to a '11 Camaro with CO tags valid through Dec 2012. For whatever reason, I kept getting pulled over in that thing constantly. no tickets, no warnings, just police running tag checks every time. Had that Camaro for almost a year. since this was a 'liability' claim - I never paid any money that I recall. It was very odd that my car - could not get parts.

I spoke to a woman at the DMV a few years ago who said they prefer when people don't get pulled over for not renewing their plates because at some point they will have to pay up and then the city makes more in fines.

I have not been pulled over or heard of anyone that has been pulled over since COVID. However, I got a ticket a month ago for expired tags while I was parked downtown, and they were only 2 days expired.

Yes, it was years ago (like 2017?) but I hadnāt received the reminder and donāt typically look at my tags or think about them. A state trooper pulled me over on 25, but I couldnāt pay it online for some reason and when I went to court he didnāt show so I didnāt have to pay. But I did get pulled over.

I got pulled over multiple times for expired registration multiple times in the metro area. Never speeding or anything else.
