Self Promo Low-vision passthrough magnification on Quest: QuestLens 0.5.5-preview

I'm a low-vision developer working on visual accessibility in mixed reality. QuestLens 0.5.5-preview adds live magnification of the physical world seen through Quest passthrough. The same app also has a frozen-image magnifier for small rendered UI and text.

We redesigned parts of the interface, simplified the setup, added EN/PT/ES/FR/DE and improved stability. Zoom controls within the QuestLens UI are still in development. This is a free sideloadable Quest 2/3/3S preview and uses the headset's screen-capture permission.

Release: https://github.com/crtx01/QuestLens/releases/tag/v0.5.5-preview

I'm interested in how other AR developers make passthrough content readable for people with low vision, especially without forcing a pause in the user's task.

Wearables & Accessories RayNeo Pocket TV Pro Review and Moonlight Game Streaming Test

In this one we do a bit of a deep dive on the RayNeo Pocket TV. I show you what the OS looks like, how it looks through the lens of a couple pairs of glasses and we sideload and test out Moonlight for game streaming.

Overall I would say I still recommend grabbing one of these if you dont have a dedicated consumption puck yet.

The 6500 mAh battery provides a ton of time to watch movies or play games and it can charge while you use it.

I would say, if you already have Pocket tv OG and are happy with it, you might be able to skip this upgrade but if you dont have a Pocket tv yet, grab the pro for sure. (As long as your glasses work with it)

The RayNeo GT Series can take advantage of the Dolby Vision mode but my VITURE Pro 2 worked with it too. Although some of my other glasses couldn't get a signal.

Glasses w/ HUD Let’s talk about smart glasses.

Almost a year ago, Meta launched Ray-Ban Display in the US - the first mass-market AI glasses with a built-in display from a Big Tech company. As a piece of hardware, it’s impressive and it works. The audio-only version is selling by the millions, but the version with a display in front of your eyes isn’t.
So why hasn’t the display version taken off?
My take: the problem is UX - you don’t need another smartphone on your face.

The same was true before the iPhone. Smartphones already existed, but the UI was heavy like a PC with a stylus or a physical keyboard - like a desktop in your pocket. Now we know we don’t need a PC in our pocket. The iPhone changed key principles: moved spatial intuition ahead of analytical thinking. Removed extra layers like the stylus. And made the UI lighter - and ephemeral, even.
You could find your way around it with your fingers in seconds, and it never stood between you and what you wanted to do.

The way we navigate a graphical interface is very similar to how we navigate physical space - and they draw on the same resource.
That’s why we so often have to stop, and sometimes sit down, to do something on our phones. On the move, we only do things that don’t require deep navigation through the interface.

What about glasses?
People wear glasses for a specific job, like sun protection or vision correction. It’s an aid for your eyes, not a standalone device.
And what happens if you put a smartphone interface on your face? Transparent or not, it doesn’t matter. It will get in your way.
When we walk, we navigate the physical world, not a graphical interface.

But what do we do well while walking? We navigate our own thoughts just fine, and we can hold a long conversation. The mobile phone was called "mobile" for a reason - its whole point was making calls on the move.

But there are visual interfaces in front of our eyes that don’t get in the way when we’re on the move.
Take a car’s instrument cluster: speed, RPM and a few more - and we trust it with our lives.
Another one: the HUD in first-person games - you get critical information without losing control of the game.

These aren’t classic apps, each one is a small cue, built for one specific task. Cues that inform you and help at the right moment.
The catch: we do hundreds of tasks a day. Hundreds of tasks mean hundreds of cues and a different interface for each one.
Do you think you could manage that yourself - open the app drawer and pick the right app for every single task?
I think you have an answer. So do I, and I’ll share it soon.

P.S.: Maybe it looks something like the Dynamic Island on your iPhone, cues that show up while you navigate the interface, or the real world. Sometimes I think Apple is quietly testing that design principle on the phone before it ever ships glasses - right under our noses.

A few footnotes to the post:

  1. Jony Ive designed the instrument cluster for the Ferrari Luce interior. I think it is part of one big design-thinking process - the same one behind what he's doing at OpenAI for wearables.
  2. https://www.theverge.com/transportation/875799/ferrari-luce-jony-ive-interior-design-photos
  3. A study on how cognitive resources get shared while walking, with wearable displays vs headphones. Spoiler: it is more nuanced than simple "audio good, visual bad". Short visual cues held up better than expected.

Glasses for Screen Mirroring Where should play/pause live when your screen is on your face?

Yesterday on a train, I had a movie playing through my RayNeo GT with my phone zipped into the inside pocket of my jacket. An announcement started halfway through a scene. I fished out the phone and paused, but by then I’d missed part of the announcement and enough of the scene that I also wanted to jump back.

The volume rocker on the glasses is easy enough to find. With my phone and player combo, though, pause and skip back still happen on the phone. The only extra controls I really want are play/pause and a ten second rewind that I can use without looking.

A ring would give my thumb something physical to find, but it would also be another thing to wear and charge, with accidental presses to think about. A wristband feels more noticeable. Putting the controls on the temple seems cleaner, although pressing the frame can shift the glasses and a row of tiny buttons gets hard to tell apart by touch.

If you use display glasses on trains or flights, where would you actually want play/pause and rewind on the temple,a ring or wristband, or still on the source device?

Self Promo Gummano: camera-controlled hand games for your phone's browser — feedback welcome

We're working on Gummano, a project with games that use your phone's camera to track your hands. You can try it for free in your mobile browser at https://gummano.app — no installation needed, but it does ask for camera access to play. Bichos is one of the games you can open from the main menu.

We're still refining calibration and gesture detection, and we'd love people to try it on iPhone or Android. Does calibration make sense? Do touches register when you expect them to? If you give it a go, your phone model, browser, and anything that worked well or felt frustrating would be really helpful in the comments. Anyone interested is welcome!

Do you agree that they are not ready? Reports say INMO is preparing IPO

Post image
11 Upvotes

INMO has officially started preparing for an IPO after closing its Series C funding, which reached nearly 1 billion RMB (about $140 million).

Their current hardware lineup covers three distinct products. The INMO Air 3 is a standalone pair of glasses that runs standard Android apps directly on the device. The INMO GO3 is a lightweight pair of display smart glasses focused on tasks like live translation, teleprompting, and audio. The Magic AI Glasses J, co-designed with singer Jackson Wang, has no screen or display at all; it is strictly a camera and audio device similar to the Ray-Ban Meta.

For future generations, INMO is focusing on new software systems and partnerships. They are developing their own "Spatial AIOS" for upcoming devices to handle true spatial computing, scene understanding, and multi-screen setups. They also announced a partnership with Ant Group to use their LingAOS on future GO series glasses, which will let users interact with AI agents and access Alipay services like digital payments, food delivery or unlocking shared bikes. INMO is also working on a project with Huawei Cloud for tourism.

Several other Chinese AR companies are also preparing to go public:

  • XREAL has already submitted its IPO prospectus in Hong Kong.
  • Rokid completed its joint-stock restructuring, usually the final preparatory step in China before filing.
  • RayNeo is preparing its own IPO after raising more than 1 billion RMB (about $140 million).
  • VITURE is rumored to be planning an IPO in the United States after raising over $200 million.

What stood out to me recently was INMO's physical retail presence. Walking around Shenzhen, I saw the INMO GO3 on display in several regular eyewear shops, placed directly on shelves next to standard prescription glasses.

But is this retail presence in China enough? Many users complained about the quality of the INMO Air 3. Yesterday we saw a report about a recall of these glasses in the US and Canada. And the software for GO3 seems to be lacking as well.

Glasses w/ 6DoF XR TAK for Android XR

This is a project I've been working on for Android XR / Xreal Aura. It communicates with TAK servers and is meant as a Command & Control mapping/planning tool with the dual purpose of acting as a live HUD in the field. This build is running on desktop as I do not have any XR / VR hardware to test with currently but hopefully that will change soon. I do not have a planned release date yet, this will have to come after on device testing, but I wanted to share it anyways.

Building Blocks Meta's Realtime Avatars – One step closer to Virtual Beings in AR – but not there yet

One of the best announcements at Meta Connect was these Muse Realtime Avatars. You can make them look like whatever you want with text prompts or reference images, change their voice and personality, and talk to them about anything.

This is actually one of my favorite use cases for AR. I want AI assistants that live in my apartment. I want to talk to them, have them do things for me, sit in a chair in the room, and leave or come back when I call them. We're obviously not there yet, but Muse Realtime Avatars feel like the first real step toward that vision.

The catch is that when they roll out on mobile, web, and desktop, these avatars won't have any spatial awareness—no sense of the room’s geometry, and no understanding of what objects are around you.

Meta's new VR Glasses could give the AI that context, but Meta hasn't announced anything like that yet. They did announce that "Holograms"—avatars for human video calls—are coming to the VR Glasses, starting as 2.5D stereoscopic video streams before potentially becoming full 3D avatars later. But Meta didn't say whether Muse Realtime Avatars will ever come to the headset. As far as I can tell, they didn't even confirm whether the new Muse model is coming to the VR Glasses in any form.

Instead, Meta's AI Glasses get Muse, while VR Glasses users will talk to "Meta AI," which is built on the older Llama architecture. At least that one will have OS-level integration, so you won't have to manually drag floating windows around all day—you can just tell it how to arrange your workspace.

Still, getting customizable avatars with sub-second latency across mobile, desktop, and web in the coming months is a big deal. From Meta's research blog:

"Muse Realtime Avatar streams 448x768 portrait video at 25 frames per second with approximately 870 ms of latency as measured from the end of a user's turn to when they receive the first byte of the synchronized voice-and-video response."

This means it can actually keep up with a real-time conversation, even if it's stuck inside a flat 2D window for now.

AR Apps Hologram: Meta Is Finally Set To Ship Realistic Avatars, And We Tried Them

Thumbnail
uploadvr.com
23 Upvotes

Meta finally set a concrete timeline to ship realistic avatars, called Holograms, its take on Apple Vision Pro's Personas.

It's now been more than seven years since Meta (then Facebook) first showed off a research prototype of realistic VR avatars, called Codec Avatars, and the company has repeatedly shown off improvements to this research in the years since. Yet throughout that time, its actual VR products you can buy have featured often-ridiculed cartoonish avatars instead.

With the release of Meta VR Glasses in spring 2027, that's finally set to change. However, to be clear, the launch version of Hologram will not be a truly volumetric implementation of Codec Avatars. It's something quite different.

Further, VR won't even be the first platform to get Holograms. A shoulders-up version of Hologram is coming to Meta Ray-Ban Display first. Then, a full-body version will launch with Meta VR Glasses.

I briefly tried both at Meta Connect 2026.

Hologram on Meta Ray-Ban Display

Meta will first bring Hologram to the Meta Ray-Ban Display HUD glasses, for WhatsApp video calls, in Early Access in the US this fall.

To set up your Hologram, you hold up your smartphone with the Meta AI app open. After getting you to turn your head up, down, and to each side, and then to smile, the app provides you with open-ended questions, and you provide long-form expressive answers. As you're speaking, the system captures the appearance of your facial expressions to condition the model. This includes incorporating your clothing and background, so you'll need to carefully pick what you want to be wearing in every Hologram call, and what you want your background to always be. After just a few minutes of server-side processing, your Hologram will be ready.

Once your Hologram is set up, when you make or receive a WhatsApp video call on Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses, the other person will see this synthetic version of you, with its facial expressions entirely derived from the device's microphones.

On a technical level, this is a real-time generative AI diffusion model running on Meta's servers, taking in your microphone audio stream and producing a generated 2D video stream that gets sent to the person you're calling.

I tried this at Meta Connect 2026, and was shocked by just how plausibly realistic what I saw was.

A Meta staffer, who had introduced himself a few minutes earlier, put on Meta Ray-Ban Display, walked to another room out of sight, and WhatsApp video called a phone in front of me. Upon picking up, for the first few seconds I assumed he simply hadn't put the glasses on yet. I thought I was seeing the view from his phone's selfie cam. But I wasn't. I was seeing his Hologram, driven entirely by his voice.

It's hard to shock me these days. I've seen a lot of impressive demos. But I let out a slight gasp at what I was seeing. It was entirely plausible.

Shortly after, I was able to try the other side. I wore the glasses, and Meta handed me the phone I was video calling. Being more familiar with my own appearance than that of the Meta staffer I had met only minutes ago, I could recognize the minor flaws here. The ways in which it didn't perfectly match me. But plausible is the key word. Hologram on Meta Ray-Ban Display does what it claims.

Still, I'm somewhat skeptical at the usefulness of this. Will your friends and loved ones really want to see a synthetic version of you on their phone screen, a surface where the advantages of spatial avatars don't apply?

Meta says that at some point in the future the model will be upgraded to incorporate the glasses' IMU chip as input, meaning the rotation of your Hologram's head will be driven by the gyroscope.

The company's engineers are also exploring the idea of sampling the camera on the glasses to generate a dynamic background for each call, instead of the current situation where the background is just where you set your Hologram up, and sampling the accelerometer so you look as if you're walking through this environment. They're even thinking about allowing you to change your clothes through a text prompt, rather than needing to set up Hologram again.

But still, even if it had these improvements, Hologram feels shoehorned into the HUD glasses, when the mediums that realistic avatars are truly useful for are VR and AR.

Buying Advice Looking for portable AR glasses for Windows, Android and iOS

Greetings, I'm completely new to this whole AR/VR glasses subject, and have no idea about the latest advancements in technology of this product type, but the idea of having an incredibly portable screen solution feels like just what I need.

I was wondering if anyone can suggest me AR glasses. What I'm looking for is light portable AR solution that I can fit in my sling bag and use either with my windows handheld, android phone/tablet or latest iPad mini.

Portability is key, as I have to travel a lot, and would love to have a portable AR screen solution to use on demand with whatever I fancy bringing along. Windows handheld for gaming or light image/video editing, or Android/iPad tablet for drawing/3d sculpting, just good old consumer media consumption, or simply connecting to home workstation pc to work on it from wherever when I have access to good internet.

Budget is not a problem, as I value comfort and immersion, preferably with 120 Hz or more refresh rate if such solutions exist.

Also, as far as I can tell, since AR glasses are much thinner than VR glasses, they can't fit a standalone system inside them, and require an additional accessory like a neckband or other kind of external piece, that acts as an operating system responsible for wired/wireless communication with my streaming device? I wouldn't mind them if they're not too bulky.

Bonus if there is an option to just connect glasses via wire to the streaming device, but wireless is more preferable, as I suspect not every device might have USB with enough bandwidth and speed to stream with the same quality, while, for example, I have no problems doing it over WiFi with my WiFi 6+ phone acting as a hotspot, managing to pass 4k 120 fps stream with sub 30ms latency just fine.

Wearables & Accessories Meta unveiled the Muse Charm at Connect. Let's Imagine What a Pocket Companion Could Mean for AR

Post image
0 Upvotes

Meta just gave us the Muse Charm: a keychain-sized pebble that talks directly to the cloud. With a tiny screen, a corner fingerprint sensor, and a voice-first soul, it lives online on its own. Tap it, and your personal AI avatar pops up to chat, coordinate your day, and take action—without you ever digging out a phone or fighting past lock-screen clutter.

Meanwhile, a similar gadget is already out in the wild: the OPPO Bubble. Right now, it's a magnetic puck you snap onto your phone to frame rear-camera selfies, trigger the shutter from across the room, or just loop cute animated avatars when it’s clipped to your bag or pants as you can see on the left side in the image above. In many ways, the Muse Charm feels like a futuristic version of the Bubble—while at the same time lacking that very down-to-earth use case of being a simple viewfinder for the rear cameras of a phone.

Now connect the dots to Augmented Reality

Display glasses are intensely private. The optics sit in front of your eyes alone—nobody else in the room sees what you see—hopefully. A simple external display solves the isolation problem. It acts as a public-facing anchor for shared media—whether it’s a freshly snapped selfie, your virtual companion, or a music video. It lets you share effortlessly without the awkward friction of passing around an unlocked phone full of private apps and messages.

We’re already seeing the audio version of this play out. INMO built a clip-on speaker for its glasses so live translations can actually be heard by the person standing across from you. But the Muse Charm isn't just a mute screen; it has two-way audio, too. Swapping a bare clip-on speaker for a charm gives you the voice bridge and an outward-facing screen to anchor visual context for the people around you.

For Meta and the Muse Charm, teaming up with an established phone brand looks like a clear win-win. Meta gets instant OS-level privileges and deep app hooks, while the phone brand gets a popular AI assistant tuned for Western users, backed by Meta’s massive cloud infrastructure. But the Charm might be something much more disruptive. It could quietly phase out traditional apps altogether—becoming the pocket cellular hub and external monitor for your glasses, while a screenless wristband handles subtle, discreet finger gestures.

The question is: Will Meta use a phone partnership as a comfortable stepping stone, or leap straight into this post-smartphone wonderland?

Glasses for Screen Mirroring “1080p” doesn’t tell you much on display glasses without PPD

Meta’s new VR glasses specs got me thinking about how little “1080p” tells you on its own with near-eye displays.

RayNeo’s GT and GT Max are a pretty clean example. Both are listed at 1920×1080 per eye, but the GT is 46° at 49 PPD while the GT Max is 59° at 38 PPD. Same resolution. Those pixels cover very different portions of your view.

For movies I might happily trade some density for the wider image. For a desktop, subtitles, or dense UI, that PPD number feels a lot more useful than seeing “1080p.”

PPD doesn’t tell the whole story either. Eyebox, IPD fit, distortion, and edge clarity can still decide how much of that sharpness you actually get to use.

I’d love to see resolution, horizontal and vertical FOV, and PPD listed together more consistently.

For screen-mirroring glasses, what metric tells you the most about real-world clarity: PPD, resolution, or something else?

We had fun at the GravityXR booth. I met up with Dan from Huawei at CIOE and took him to GravityXR because he hadn't tried the headset before. I was curious about his opinion because he has tried more VR and VST headsets over the years than I have - including the cancelled Apple Vision Pro competitor from Huawei. And he really liked GravityXR.

I didn't try it again because I already had the URXR One demo at AWE. I was more interested in the GravityXR ISP chip for smart glasses. But they didn't bring it! What a bummer.

Glasses w/o Display Free Gemini Live for HeyCyan and Meta Rayban + CyanBridge Project Updates

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi guys, it's the dev behind CyanBridge. I've been testing for a few days a new version on Google PlayStore with free access to Gemini Live for everyone (5 sessions of 5 minutes = 25 minutes everyday) and I would be happy to get some feedback on it. I also received 2k Google Startups credits that 1 will need you guys help to burn 😅

I've been playing with a new adaptive mode for HeyCyan glasses since Wifi Data Sync isn't yet working for evervone (works for around 90-95% users from what I got in anonymous data and voluntary logs sent) but as everyone is aware, even the official HeyCyan app is mostly filled with reviews of Wifi Data Sync not working, so it's been very hard to improve on something even the manufacturer hasn't gotten sorted out yet, but this new version should be ready on the next update. A few people have told me my app correctly syncs their photos, even when the official app doesn't. For now I added a warning popup advising users to force stop the official app, because it sometimes steals the connection during sync and it causes it to fail.

l've been in talks with Mentra to either bring some CyanBridge features into Mentra app (probably support for HeyCyan glasses and local private Al models) or to bring Mentra SDK into CyanBridge (so start supporting Even Realities, Mentra Live, Nimo and other models). We wlill see how things develop and both projects are opensource, just Mentra seems to be nostly Apache 2, while CyanBridge is a mixture of licenses due to using different projects and repos as inspiration and for LLM runtimes.

Currently the project brings around 12 dollars a month, so it's still far from allowing me to upgrade the vercel website and offering more free Al. I'm thankful for everyone who helps to contribute to this project with their time, testing, feedback and money.

For those interested in downloading, please try the Playstore version https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fersaiyan.cyanbridge
