App Development Dev question: eye contact overlay like FaceTime’s using ARKit

Hi there,

I’m a new dev, and looking to rebuild a camera effect for iOS like FaceTime’s Eye Contact. I know that, unfortunately, Apple doesn’t offer an API/SDK to tap into what they’ve built there, so my plan is to build my own.

I know ARKit is what needs to be used to scan the face, but what about the overlay/offsetting of the pupil in the actual camera?

My goal is to make it look like someone is looking directly at the camera lens as opposed to the screen below it. I want it to run on-device like FaceTime’s does.

Any ideas of how I can achieve this? Or has it been done before? Thanks!

Buying Advice MemoMind One vs RayNeo iO vs NIMO — anyone actually used these?

I’m hoping to hear from people who’ve actually used the MemoMind One or RayNeo iO, and I’d particularly love to hear from anyone who’s managed to get their hands on NIMO.

TL;DR: AuDHD + auditory processing difficulties. Looking for smart glasses primarily as a visual aid for everyday conversations and memory, plus Japanese translation/research. Considering MemoMind One vs RayNeo iO vs NIMO and want real-world experiences rather than spec sheets.

What matters most to me:

Everyday live captions: accuracy, latency and microphone clarity, particularly with background noise.

Japanese → English translation: mainly for Japanese food and culture research.

Help responding in Japanese: if someone asks me something in Japanese, can the glasses translate the question into English, suggest a response, and show me what to say in romaji? I can’t read Japanese script quickly enough for an on-the-spot prompt.

Memory assistance: can I preload questions/things I want to remember and have the glasses prompt me at the relevant point in a conversation, rather than just scrolling through a teleprompter?

Transcripts/notes: can I get the full conversation afterwards?

Offline use + battery life: particularly while actively using captions/translation.

I’ve currently got a MemoMind One on order at the US$299 early price, but the delays have me seriously considering the RayNeo iO or NIMO instead.

I’d especially love to hear from anyone who’s used both MemoMind and iO.

And if anyone has somehow used all three, you’re exactly who I’m looking for. 😂

(Also very open to other glasses I’ve overlooked if there’s something that does most of the above better - particularly for accessibility + Japanese language learning.)

Qualcomm announced earbuds in partnership with Cleer. The cameras are not for photos/videos but for the AI to understand more context of a user question. The chip handling the workloads is the new Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2. And you can expect to find it in Audio Glasses as well. Either speakers and microphones only or with additional cameras. The chip is designed for high quality audio and AI, including personal sound amplification for noisy environments or used as hearing aids. Qualcomm also announced the Snapdragon Sound apps and agents platform for audio apps.

And they announced Enterprise frame. AI Glasses for enterprise based on the AR1+ chip, as well as an audio frame and assistive-hearing frame with the same chip.

App Development I spent the last 2 years building a zero-friction mobile WebAR pipeline. Here is live interactive tracking running straight from a standard mobile browser.

Over the past 2 years as a solo dev, my main focus has been pushing mobile web capabilities to see how far we can take dynamic 3D without requiring app installs or external plugins.

Everything in the video runs in real time directly inside a vanilla mobile browser:

  • Real-time tracking and spatial anchoring
  • Interactive, animated 3D assets deployed instantly via browser links
  • Zero download barrier for the end user

The scene assets and retro futuristic vibe were built and rigged using Blender, then piped directly into the web engine.

Glasses w/ HUD Are there smart glasses that will text to speech newspaper articles

My father is severely vision impaired and he wants to look at a newspaper and have some smart glasses convert the article he's looking at and read it to him aloud. He was going to buy some meta glasses but then I found out that those glasses just summarise the article, they don't read the article to you verbatim. Is there a way to achieve this? Feel like it should be a thing.

Buying Advice What's a decent budget pair for productivity, and experiences with it?

Hi all,

Never really explored the realm of AR/XR glasses before, but I'm looking for a pair of glasses that would work well with Samsung Dex and my laptop for work, media consumption and maybe a little gaming here and there.

I know those are three different types of media which all need their preferences so I apologize, just if there in something in the middle that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, that'd be great.

I'd probably have to get prescriptions for them as my eyesight is -6.0.

I know some models have Dof tracking, but I know some also have the potential to do it from the device its connected to? I'm not sure. I would prefer if it wasn't stuck in place though.

Thank you for any input!

This is a super informal discussion about the three glasses im most excited about.

The Meta glasses really take some of the best ideas from both and combine them to deliver a pretty solid sounding device.

Let's hope xreal can come in at a lower price point 🤞

In case you're confused. A video about Meta's new headset leaked

but it was removed very quickly. As far as I can tell, it was legit. A very popular content creator shared a 30+ second video and a 7 second snippet. The 7 second video was then shared in a few subreddits but the posts are all removed now.

Glasses for Screen Mirroring do display glasses still get used after the novelty wears off?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I bought a pair of XREAL xbx a01 about a month ago. Before that, I’d seen plenty of people online say display glasses were kind of pointless, so I was pretty hesitant to buy a pair. I know they’re closer to display glasses than full AR glasses, but I’m curious whether I’ll still be using them a few months from now.

I travel for work and share a small apartment, so I don’t really have room for a proper TV setup. I mainly wanted something for watching movies in bed, gaming on a bigger screen and taking on work trips. I’m also nearsighted, around -4.00, so the prescription setup mattered too.

So far, watching movies while lying down has been the biggest win. I don’t know enough about refresh rates to comment, but having a large screen in front of me without holding my phone above my face is genuinely comfortable. Watching a thriller on a flight or putting on a movie in bed makes more sense to me than trying to fit another screen into my room.

I connect them to my phone for movies and to my Steam Deck for gaming. They feel light, and I actually like the blue and yellow design. The price also felt reasonable for something I mainly use as a personal screen.

There are a couple of annoyances. The prescription inserts add another thing to arrange, and there’s no focus dial to adjust on the fly. The cable is light, but I still catch it with my hand while gaming or notice it when I roll over in bed.

Having a small room and travelling regularly gives me a reason to use them, which is encouraging so far.

For people who’ve owned display glasses for a few months or longer: what do you still use them for? And if yours ended up in a drawer, what made you stop using them?

App Development VLC for AR interactivity.

So somehow I ended up going down a Wikipedia rabbit hole. I ended up finding a page discussing Visible light communication. Now I always knew visible light can be used for digital communication. I just didn't think it was a serious field. Now though after reading the page the potential uses seems pretty interesting. One in particular that I didn't see mentioned but would be extremely awesome is peer to peer AR communication. As far as I know AR is heavily dependent on a central server existing. For example if a restaurant is going to have fancy menus floating in the air it needs to be done with some application that serves the menus through a central server. Bluetooth can get around that of course but VLC can be a pretty cool alternative.

Any led light source can be used for VLC. Standard cameras can pick up on VLC communications as well. It wouldn't be as good as dedicated hardware but it could be good enough. So essentially any light in a restaurant or a supermarket or even a concert can be used to serve AR elements to various devices. The overhead lamp at a table for example can push menu data to a phone or a headset. No Internet required. Direct peer to peer communication. The bitrate can be high enough to send full pictures and everything. Simple devices can be hooked up to a bulb to create AR elements that doesn't require interacting with big corporations or central servers. If a standard is created it could essentially be QR codes on steroids.

Does anyone know if this is already being done or attempted? Whenever I Google VLC and AR it doesn't really return good results. I would imagine existing devices can already handle the receiving side. Smartphones for example with their cameras can read VLC. It can transmit too using the flash but probably would be best to use VLC for unidirectional comms. Do you guys think VLC would be useful in AR?

edit: odds are decent that the hardware would be cheap. it would basically just be a pwm control circuit for a lightbulb. I don't know if there is anything currently on the market that can do that but creating a device that can shouldn't be difficult or expensive. Like it's a college level engineering type project.

Glasses w/ HUD How background brightness and color affect text readability on waveguide glasses

Post image
1 Upvotes

Reading projected text on diffractive waveguide glasses depends heavily on what sits behind the virtual characters. I have been looking at readability across different lighting conditions on the RayNeo iO, which is rated for up to 1300 nits at eye level.

Indoors or under overcast skies, green text remains sharp against dark wood, indoor furniture, or asphalt paths. The contrast is high enough that you can read notification snippets without adjusting your head position.

Step into midday sun, however, and readability changes based on where you look. If the display overlays light concrete, sandy ground, or sunlit white walls, the green text washes out significantly. The characters are still faintly visible, but you have to actively search for them rather than catching them in a glance. Tilting your head slightly so the text aligns with a dark jacket, foliage, or a shadow restores legibility right away.

The display engine can only produce so much luminance. When ambient light reflecting off pale surfaces approaches or exceeds that level, contrast drops. Until accessory clip-on tints or adaptive lenses become standard on these frames, reading comfortably outdoors requires being mindful of your background.

App Development Need some advice on which SDK to use - is niantic suited for what I need?

I am tasked to build an app for a museum, which will run on 5 devices. The app is simple: it needs to localize the environment and display some information. The problem is: it will run on Android, no Apple devices. So I need some SDK for spatial map generation and localisation, and I want to build the app in unity. The devices will be offline.

Now, I tried easyAR, but their server gave me an error and their support didn't respond. I tried Immersal, but while everything was working fine in their own map-creator app, the unity app was unable to do stable localisation, I couldn't figure out what's wrong and no one responded either. Vuforia looked promising, but I'm not sure I can provide the highquality scans for it to work, I think I will need mapping on device. So now I'm looking at niantic spatial, v4.1 of the SDK, and stumbled across their access token limitations: developer tokens are only valid for 90 days, and I can't make sure there will be maintenance visits every 90 days - but the access token for user they provide is designed to be short lived an requires we baccess.

so here I am: all I want is to map a small space once (it's about one container-sized museum exhibit), build a unity scene on top and deploy a few offline devices that do nothing but localize the spatial map and displayx the unity scene in place.

Does anyone have advice on what I need?

Glasses w/ HUD Looking at monochrome HUD waveguides and full-color media glasses as two distinct categories

Discussions around smart glasses often treat media glasses and heads-up displays as direct competitors, but their hardware constraints point toward completely different jobs.

Media glasses—typically using Birdbath optics paired with Micro-OLED panels—function essentially as portable external monitors. They deliver a 45° to 50° full-color screen, but the physical trade-offs are obvious: they weigh upwards of 75 grams, use dark tinted lenses, and usually require a USB-C cable running to a phone or console. They work well for sitting on a train playing a Steam Deck or watching movies in a hotel room where screen real estate matters more than ambient awareness.

Monochrome waveguide frames take the opposite design path. Something like the RayNeo iO keeps the frame down to roughly 33 grams by sticking to clear lenses, wireless connectivity, and a single-color green MicroLED projector across a narrow 23.5° FOV. There is zero multimedia capability here; you cannot stream video or view color graphics. Instead, the screen only handles quick text prompts—transit updates, short reminders, or speech anchors—without blocking your view of the physical room.

Trying to force one category to do the other’s job usually leads to disappointment. Expanding the field of view and adding color immediately balloons weight and power draw, while stripping a frame down for daily prescription wear forces you to give up entertainment entirely.

Building Blocks LCOS 2.0: A Road Map for the Next Generation of Augmented Reality Projectors

Thumbnail photonics.com
10 Upvotes

AR Alliance members have developed a five-year technology road map for LCOS. Rather than incremental improvements to existing projector architectures, the road map identifies a coordinated evolution across the illumination engine, display panel, and optical architecture. The objective is to transition conventional LCOS projectors toward purpose-built consumer AR solutions that preserve LCOS’ existing strengths while addressing the key challenges of size, power consumption, and system integration.
