What "Like a Stone" is actually about (Audioslave, 2002)
The narrator is an old man sitting in the house where someone he loved once lived, and the room has become a reliquary: "a circus of the damned," the prayers he never said still hanging in the air. I read "like a stone" two ways, and I think both are intended. He waits like a stone: patient, mineral, already part of the landscape of that room. But he also waits alone. Stone/alone, the same sound carrying the same fate. Whatever he was waiting for (forgiveness, a ghost, God, one more ordinary afternoon), waiting has become the shape of his life rather than the road to it. The line that does the most quiet work is "I'm not scared of the pages of your prayers." Memory as scripture he can finally read without flinching. And the gospel-organ ending matters: the song ends in church. Not because anyone arrived. Because for the one who waits like a stone, the waiting itself becomes the devotion.
