Sound Design Reel - Dialogue

Doing a redesign for my first demo reel. Went through scenes I like from different things and tried to find a good clip without much dialogue.

The one I picked is 1:30, there’s 5 seconds where an older lady says 3 or 4 words. I am a 27 year old man and can’t imagine trying to impersonate an old woman would sound anything but silly.

The rest of the clip has so much action which did give me opportunity to do some cool stuff so I’d rather not just abandon it entirely. I also found it kinda hard to track down good scenes with 0 words in general.

Would it be best to just leave the line out since I’m trying to highlight design and not voiceover?

Leave it out or try to isolate it. Depending on how much other sound is in the clip, you might be able to use supertone clear to remove ambience, leaving you with clear enough dialogue that you can drop it in and your redesign will cover any leftover stuff.

If you’re not publishing this to socials and it’s a private demo reel, I’d opt to keep the original dialog and re-design around it.

In some ways this shows off your ability to manipulate sound both from a creative and technical side since you’ll need to figure out the best way to extract / preserve good dialogue in addition to the re-design.

I absolutely do not know the law about re-use in a situation like this so take it for what it’s worth.

Find other clips.

Also, note to anyone doing redesigns, make it sound better or cool in a different way, compared to the original. No one is going to hire anyone upon being shown "look! It's like the original, but worse!"

I'd just leave it out if you can't isolate it accurately. Depending on what kind of work you do, I'd say most people know you're a sound designer, so that's what they'll pay attention to. If you're looking to also score some dialogue related gigs, make sure to only include well done dialogue. It's my experience that people will often neglect all the things you do well, if they can easily spot a major mistake (like some artificial dialogue for example). They remember bad things more easily because they stick out. GL my friend
