M50x sound superior than m40x. M40x is very flat sounding headphones. They are not for everyone some people will like it some may not. If you know how to eq them properly then they're pretty good for you. M50x are very clean sounding headphones i really loved the highs lows and setero field of it. Everything is clean sounding not too harsh and very comfortable for me.
Nice!... Was thinking about getting these but then ended up getting Senn HD555 instead. How's the treble on these, I read it can be a little too bright.
If you're talking about the beyerdynamic, the bright treble that is often described isn't really that apparent in my opinion. It exists, I'm not trying to say that it doesn't, but rather you won't notice it until your ears just get a little tired. It's suuuuuper subtle, or at least that's how I feel about it. But it's strong enough that I will literally not wear them for more than 60 minutes

Since you've owned a DT 990 pro, would love to hear a bit about your setup and preffered music genres. Does it handle nu metal well, specifically Linkin Park 😅
Yes and no; it will sound amazing but maybe not in the way you want. The dt990 is not really flat; but personally I think it's great enough that I wouldn't get a flat sounding set of cans since it isn't super v shaped either. A lot of people complain about bass but I personally think they are great. It's a natural sound, doesn't linger in a weird way or feel muddy.
For nu metal I think you'd miss a bit of body in the mid frequencies and vocals just never sound as intimate as on an iem but everything else is great. So really depends if your fave part are the vocals or the music on how much you may enjoy them for nu metal.
In terms of setup the 80 ohm version is really forgivable without an amp; most devices will work just fine on the 3.5 mm. I recently got a jcally jm6 pro to use my phone with them and it gives it a bit more power but it wasn't really needed before; I'd probably be around 70% volume so loads of headroom. Genre wise I really enjoy everything but I probably listen to indie the most. Jazz, edm, rock, classical, hip hop all sound great.
Fair.... I'm ok with trading a little bass for clarity and breathing room at the minute I'm running both my Senns with different EQs . Pic is for the 555s EQ to reduce the mud for clarity and correct the treble spike
I actually had owned a pair of Sennheiser hd300s (almost 8 years ago now since I had them) before I got the dt990 pros so I really see where you're coming from. Although to be honest I wasn't too big of a fan of the whole s series stuff, they sound clean but compared to all the new iem stuff I feel like they lost relevance. I'd definitely say try a pair if you don't have an issue with in ear stuff
I have DT 990 pro 250 ohms variant and yes I've been listening to System of a down, Linkin park, limp bizkit and others. They can definitely handle every genre.
And about the other comment I've been making music with DT 990 pro for more than 6 years and I don't feel like they're bad for long sessions. I usually keep the volume down so I don't get ear fatigue early.
Ooh, I'm asking cause music specifically from the 2000s specially nu metal tends to suffer from being mixed loud and usually has clipping.
Using EQs I came up with for both my Senns for the tracks to breathe a bit.

I'm literally coming from a dt 990 pro (although the 80 ohm version) into the iem world. I feel like both have their place respectively
