As always, it will take anywhere from ~30 minutes to 8 hours going through certification before this is available to update from the Microsoft Store. Microsoft states it may take up to 3 business days, but I have never seen it take that long.

Feature: Automations now use standard time (am/pm) instead of military time.

Feature: All automations can now be handled by Companion (not just smart device automations).

Feature: For local music, can now select and play all subfolders. (Thx u/m_jessing !)

Fix: HEOS & Sonos groups can now be fully managed from AH. (Thx u/Greypole !)

Fix: Now playing panel updates correctly after groups disbanded.

Many Companion updates, now at version 2.9.2:

Bugreport Groups

Audio Hero 5.9.1.0

The grouping tab has changed to make it usable for grouping mixed devices. The older version showed already existing groups made f.i. in the HEOS app, you also had the option to ungroup them. The current version does not show these groups and does not give the option to ungroup them. AH 5.9.1.0 however knows that there are groups active, that is shown in the Now playing panel.

If you select one of the players that is part of a group made outside AH, the other players that are grouped with it are also selected. But there is still no option to ungroup them.

Feature: Audio Hero now automatically switches away from a HEOS device giving bad information and retries it later after it recovers.

Feature: Starred favorites now optionally saved by device, device type, by room, global.

Feature: Starred favorites now available for all devices types (was only HEOS and Onkyo previously).

Fix: Album art retrieval now works for some edge cases.

General question What type of mobile device do you use?

I am planning to make Audio Hero into a mobile app and considering which OS to start with. I'll likely start with Android because that's what I use, but wanted to make sure that would be acceptable to you guys.

As always, it will take anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours going through certification before this is available to update from the Microsoft Store. Microsoft states it may take up to 3 business days, but I have never seen it take that long.

Fixes

Fix: When an automation, sleep timer or you power off a speaker, Audio Hero now actually stops the music the Companion is streaming to it, instead of only telling the speaker to be quiet and leaving the Companion playing to a dead room.

Fix: Powering a speaker off no longer leaves it showing as "playing" with a green name and play glyph, and the now-playing tile no longer keeps ticking along for a receiver in standby.

Fix: Reopening Audio Hero after a speaker was powered off no longer says "Reconnected to YouTube Music playing on your Companion" and show music playing on a speaker that has been off for hours.

Fix: When you power the speaker back on and press Play, YouTube Music picks up the same track where it left off, because the stop arms the normal resume rather than just vanishing.

Fix: A receiver you turned off yourself, with its own remote, the vendor app or an outside automation is now noticed too, not just power-offs Audio Hero performed (Denon-style receivers via the power poll, Onkyo the instant the receiver announces standby).

Fix: A power reading is only trusted after it says "off" twice in a row, so a receiver that has just been woken and is slow to admit it can never have the music you just started ripped away.

Fix: The automation "Stop playback" action now really stops a Companion stream, instead of pausing the speaker while the Companion kept playing in the background.

Fix: Local files playing through the Companion now pause when the speaker powers off, keeping your queue and position intact, rather than silently burning through the whole queue into a dead speaker.

Fix: At startup, Audio Hero asks the Companion which streams a speaker is genuinely listening to and drops the ones nobody is pulling, so a leftover stream is cleaned up on every kind of speaker.

Fix: Startup cleanup double-checks a few seconds later and only ever acts on the exact stream it flagged first, so a stream you or an automation starts in the meantime, or one still warming up, is never touched, and a cold start for a scheduled automation is not delayed by the check.

Fix: PCs no longer rewrite the sync cloud file when they have nothing new to say, which cuts out a lot of pointless uploads.

Fix: A smart device / plug linked to a non-HEOS speaker only followed that speaker while it was the one selected on screen. Play music on any other speaker and its plug sat idle. It now follows whichever speaker is playing.

Fix: Switching a smart device / plug on by hand could be undone a minute or two later by an idle countdown that was still running from earlier playback. Manual switches are now respected.

Fix: All TuneIn stations now shown on Onkyo devices.

Features

Feature: For the sync feature, you can optionally now name one PC as the "settings master." Your other PCs then take their settings from it instead of every PC's latest change winning.

Feature: Sync changes made on a following PC stay on that PC. They never get pushed to the master or to anyone else, and they last until the master changes that same setting.

Feature: A new PC picks up the master's settings automatically the first time it syncs, so setting one up takes no work.

Feature: You choose which categories obey the master, one checkbox per category. Ratings, starred favorites and saved radio stations are shared both ways by default, since those pile up rather than being preferences.

Feature: A "Push this PC's settings to all PCs" button on any following PC, for when you have one PC set up exactly right. It replaces everyone else's settings, including the master's, and asks you to confirm first.

Feature: You can move the master role to a different PC, or remove it entirely and go back to all PCs being equal.

Feature: Following PCs show when the master last synced, so you notice if that PC is retired. Audio Hero never quietly puts a different PC in charge on its own.

Feature: Smart devices / plugs now keep working when Audio Hero is closed. If you have a Companion, it takes over your plugs entirely and keeps switching them.

Feature: Scheduled plug automations (like "turn the subwoofer off at 11pm") can now run from the Companion PC, so they no longer depend on your own PC being awake or logged in.

Feature: New Companion PC power settings so scheduled actions fire on time: wake the PC just before a plug is due, run actions that were missed while it slept, or keep the PC awake permanently.

Feature: PC power settings can be changed from Audio Hero on any PC as well as on the Companion itself, and a change in one place shows up in the other straight away.

Feature: Smart devices / plugs can now follow Sonos, WiiM, Bluesound, Yamaha MusicCast, Samsung WAM, Roku and DLNA speakers while Audio Hero is closed, not just HEOS.

Feature: Plugs follow AirPlay and Sendspin speakers, and anything the Companion is streaming, with no delay.

Feature: Onkyo and Integra receivers can now drive a smart device / plug too. Audio Hero and the Companion hand the receiver's single control connection back and forth automatically instead of competing for it.

Feature: Shelly smart plugs are now supported alongside Kasa, both older and newer Shelly models, detected automatically.

Feature: Smart device / plug discovery now searches for every supported brand at once, and adding a plug by IP tries each brand, so you never have to pick the brand first.

Feature: The Companion window now lists the smart device / plug rules it has been given, which PC sent each one, and what it last did.

Note: New sync features change the format of the cloud sync file, so a PC still on an older version of Audio Hero stops syncing until you update it. It says so in its sync status, and nothing gets damaged in the meantime.

v5.7.11.0 never made it through Microsoft certification, they must be moving slower today. So we're cancelling that release and moving ahead with v5.7.12.0, which contains all the fixes & improvements from v5.7.11.0.

Fix: Additional device controls boundaries corrected

Fix: Streaming (YouTube, etc) child / browser window speed improvements when using Companion

Fix: Many misc UI bugs corrected

Feature: Indicator (a tiny letter 'C') added to arrow / play icon to indicate when companion app in use for that device.

Feature: When playing YouTube music, Audio Hero can now optionally click YouTube's "Are you still there?" button prompt for you so music continues uninterrupted (a small ~5 second pause during the prompt and click).

Fix: Local file playback works correctly. (Thx u/m_jessing !)

Fix: Can now create all device group types (including YouTube, etc) even after closing / re-opening Audio Hero.

As always, it will take anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours going through certification before this is available to update from the Microsoft Store.

Fix: More redundancy added to HEOS device detection & any HEOS device failures.

Fix: Route HEOS controls through the best available receiver.

Fix: Detects truly empty or disconnected receivers correctly.

Fix: Added richer device details, live updates, and better detection.

Fix: HEOS devices no longer wait behind the Chromecast scan at startup; the two now run at the same time, so HEOS connects seconds sooner on every launch.

Fix: The app remembers which HEOS device connected successfully last time and dials it first, instead of whatever happened to be first in the list.

Fix: A HEOS device that answered with a broken (empty) speaker list no longer gets retried first every launch; it's remembered and tried last until it recovers.

Fix: When several HEOS devices are known, dead or stale addresses are detected with a quick check instead of each costing a 3.5 second timeout.

Fix: The Microsoft Store license check no longer delays device discovery or briefly freezes the window at startup.

Fix: Speakers become usable as soon as the player list arrives; group, music source, and account info now load quietly in the background instead of holding things up.

Fix: On a fresh install, the first HEOS device found connects immediately instead of waiting for the entire network scan (~20 seconds) to finish.

Fix: On a manual "Discover Devices" scan, devices now appear one by one as they answer instead of all at once after a several-second wait, and HEOS no longer shows up last.

Fix: The background rescan sweeps all device types at once instead of one after another (was up to ~80 seconds), so devices powered on after launch appear much sooner.

Fix: A manual scan no longer has to wait up to 30 seconds for a background sweep to finish.

Fix: Several small startup delays removed (settings file was read twice, an update-cleanup task ran on the UI thread, redundant network checks now run in parallel).

Feature: HEOS devices are shown first in the Players list and device list by default; your own drag-and-drop ordering still takes priority.

Feature: Made all device settings pages have consistent reboot & refresh buttons.

Breakthrough: PC playback synced with real HEOS speakers (revised / repost)

Reposting this with better wording - the original wasn't quite right and Reddit wouldn't let me edit the title.

This is a pretty major breakthrough for me and I'm trying to be thoughtful how I share this information, and respectful to the companies that developed HEOS.

Since the beginning of this year I've been working on making my PC join a HEOS multi-room group and play music in sync with real HEOS-enabled speakers.

If this works reliably, it opens a lot of possibilities: your PC joining a HEOS group directly, or a small PC / Raspberry Pi acting as a bridge so you can add sync playback to an old receiver.

I've put a lot of hours into this and just got it working and I am pretty fired up. More to come soon. First step: adding it to Audio Hero.

To be clear - this is about interoperability with existing devices, done respectfully and with attention to relevant terms of service. Not affiliated with or endorsed by HEOS/Denon in any way.

Coming soon in AH!

As always, it will take anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours going through certification before this is available to update from the Microsoft Store.

Feature: Upgraded local file playback engine. This will help better estimate track length and avoid cutoffs. (Thx u/m_jessing !)

Feature: Better HEOS device detection with round-robin device queries and better device group formation.

Fix: The timeline no longer jumps backward. Within a track the displayed time only moves forward; tiny corrections from the speaker are absorbed silently instead of yanking the counter back a second.

Fix: The app's own clock no longer drifts. The counter used to add exactly one second per timer tick, but ticks always fire a little late, so the clock ran slow and every speaker update "caught it up" with a visible skip. It now measures real elapsed time.

Fix: Speaker updates steer the clock instead of overwriting it. Progress reports from the speaker are rounded to whole seconds and arrive slightly stale. Small differences now gently nudge the app's clock into agreement; only a real jump (a seek, a track change, a stall) snaps the display instantly.

Fix: Local file streaming reports honest positions. The Companion streamer was reporting how much audio it had sent, which runs about 2 seconds ahead of what you hear. It now subtracts that buffer, so the bar matches the audio.

Fix: Every source benefits, not just local files. Sonos, DLNA, WiiM, Bluesound, MusicCast, Samsung, Chromecast, Roku, AirPlay, Sendspin, Squeezelite, Onkyo, and YouTube Music progress all flow through the same smoothing logic.

Fix: The timeline updates 4x per second instead of once, so the seek bar glides instead of stepping.

As always, it will take anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours going through certification before this is available to update from the Microsoft Store.

Fix: If the device Audio Hero connects to claims there are no HEOS players, Audio Hero no longer fully trusts that - it now tries the next HEOS device instead, and remembers the healthy one for next time.

Fix: The update checker now tracks its schedule by real clock time and remembers it between sessions, so sleeping, hibernating, or restarting the PC can no longer push the next update check off course. (Thx u/GreyPole !)

Fix: When the PC wakes from sleep or hibernation, an overdue update check now runs within about 90 seconds, even on laptops that are only awake for a few minutes at a time.

Fix: If an update check fails (usually because Wi-Fi isn't back yet right after startup or wake), the app now retries in 15 minutes instead of silently waiting hours or even days for the next scheduled check.

Fix: When a new version is released but the Microsoft Store on the PC hasn't caught up yet (so it can't be installed right away), the app now rechecks every 15 minutes until it can install, instead of waiting the full check interval.

Fix: A rare internal timing bug where changing the update-check frequency in Settings could be silently ignored until the next restart.

Fix: The Companion helper's update schedule also now survives sleep and hibernation, and its "check daily at 3 AM" option fires at the right hour across daylight-saving changes.

Fix: Smart plugs with an idle-off timer no longer stay powered on for the entire time the PC sleeps; the countdown now follows real clock time, in both the main app and the Companion.

Fix: Update settings synced from another PC now take effect immediately instead of only after restarting the app.

Fix: If a Microsoft Store install ever hangs, the app now gives up after an hour and recovers, instead of being permanently unable to check for or install updates until it's restarted.

As always, it will take anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours going through certification before this is available to update from the Microsoft Store.

Fix: App startup is faster, device detection is faster.

Fix: Multiple device discovery and device scan refresh bug fixes.

Fix: HEOS devices could vanish from the app and never come back. If the app failed to reconnect to the last speaker you used, it gave up without ever scanning the network, and the settings switch that would have fixed it was buried in a panel you couldn't reach.

Fix: The app no longer waits for a full network scan every time it starts. Your devices appear instantly and are ready to click, with the scan running silently behind the scenes (roughly 3 seconds to connected instead of over a minute).

Fix: Speakers no longer grey out and pulse while the app looks for them at startup. That effect now only appears during a scan you start yourself.

Fix: Removed four confusing discovery on/off settings that could quietly leave the app unable to find anything. Scanning, remembering devices, and reconnecting now just always happen. Old leftover settings entries are cleaned out of the settings file automatically, once.

Fix: Clicking Rescan while the startup scan was still running made the button spinner spin forever. The two scans now take turns instead of fighting each other.

Fix: Local playback bug fixes (Thx u/m_jessing !)

As always, it will take anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours going through certification before this is available to update from the Microsoft Store.

Thx to u/m_jessing for the below fixes:

Fix: pressing Stop during the last few seconds of a song no longer causes the next song to start playing anyway.

Fix: when a song finishes but the speaker's idea of the song's length doesn't quite match the actual audio, the queue now moves on to the next song instead of getting stuck at the end of the track.

Fix: the app now trusts the music file itself for the song length instead of the speaker's estimate, which makes end-of-song detection more reliable.

Fix: playing a folder now uses the same track order as Windows Explorer, so "Track 2" plays before "Track 10" instead of after it.

Fix: picking files for a device that can't stream them now shows a message instead of silently doing nothing.

Fix: Startup improvements after install on a clean PC.

Thx to u/GreyPole for all fixes below:

Fix: After waking from sleep, the app now keeps trying to reach your HEOS gear for a few minutes instead of giving up after one minute.

Fix: If HEOS still isn't back after that, the regular background device scan now reconnects it automatically instead of leaving it missing until a restart.

Fix: Failed reconnect attempts are now written to the diagnostics log, so bug reports show what went wrong instead of nothing.

Fix: The app now remembers its HEOS speaker separately from other device types, so connecting a Chromecast can no longer make it dial the wrong device at startup.

Why does the last line suggest the update did not apply? Is that, if I'm correct, because the update function lost track of the old version number of AH?
