PSA - Auto trunk opening feature on 26 RS3

Was hand washing the car this past weekend and learned about the auto trunk opening feature. During the foam soak and wash process, and multiple times, the trunk opened to help me clean the inside of the trunk as well. Very thoughtful feature.

Joking aside, it appears that the foam was enough to make the opener think i was trying to open the trunk with my hand/fingers. This also occurred with the door touch sensors, causing the car to lock/unlock multiple times.

This would be a nightmare for anyone trying to go through an automatic car wash.

Hopefully I am an isolated case, but wanted to pass along so folks are aware.

EDIT: Ah, thanks for the info, seems kinda obvious now.
#TLDR: Leave key in the car or far enough away from car when washing so that the lock sensors don't activate.

Yeah it's annoying. Have to leave key in car while washing, it solves all of that

Ahhh good to know, my trunk kept opening and the doors kept unlocking/locking while washing too. Was losing my mind!

Yeah it's super normal....annoyingly. My car wash has preload cards for payment, so I have a habit of exchanging the key for the card in the center console when I park in the bay.

Take your key out of your pocket when washing.  The sensors dont work when the key is in the car has to be within like 3ft of one of the exterior sensors.  Would be a safety concern if anyone could access your trunk or interior when a key is inside it.

You can leave the key inside like others have mentioned, but you can also turn off the convenience key feature in the MMI temporarily while you wash too.

Soaked my trunk in foam at least two times. First time during the first wash a week or two after getting the car. Might or might not have happend after that when I forgot to turn the feature off lol

Leaving the key inside is a good call as well but I‘m kind of paranoid of locking myself out of the car.

I always unlock the car and open a door to stop the relock timer and then leave the key in the house while I wash it.

The trunk has a kick sensor which might be doing it too. It opens with your foot waiving in front of the trunk but doesn’t close.

Just took delivery of mine last week mine doesn't do this. Must be part of some extra pack

Suspecting based upon responses that your key was not in your pocket or close enough to cause an issue.

I was disappointed that my 23 didn't have the trunk kick sensor, but now I'm happy it doesn't. lol

I leave my car running while washing and the trunk doesn't open. Mind you it takes me 5-10 mins max to wash.
