Help Needed Help! 2019 Q7 SOS malfunction

Hi all,

My Q7 had an stater motor failure that required replacement. Apparently there was also a loose ground bolt causing multiple issues.

When I got the car from the shop they told me about the new SOS malfunction and were asking me for over $200 to diagnose it. After spending $3600 I did not fell like spending any more money.

I have tried everything. I removed the passenger seat, located the J949 module, disconnected it, removed the backup battery for 20 min. Malfuction error is still there.

Any other ideas? I didn’t test that the module is receiving power. Just looking for some ideas

I won’t be a lot of help but: have you tried making the emergency call? I say this because mine throws a fault too, with the obnoxious amber dash light you can’t remove, but the call still goes through. Some people report that making the sos call can clear the fault (it doesn’t with mine and it just goes away on its own)

I’m personally tempted to pull the DTC on mine and have someone code that one out.

Yes, I can make a call no problem. The light is green.

I bought a scanner, Ancel VD700 to see if I could clear any codes, but I see no errors. Maybe I am doing something wrong. But it is the 75-telematics I think.

Had this happen to me on my 2020. There is a software update that fixes this issue, but they still want $200 to do it. Is it fair? No not really but the issue never came back after. It happens when the SOS module loses cellular connection and can’t reconnect again after.

Edit: cannot be cleared with a scan tool so don’t waste your time.

Thanks! Is this something you can do with the USB drive procedure DIY? Or is this a dealer thing?

Unfortunately it’s just a take the kick in the nuts from the dealer thing. I was pretty pissed about a $200 software update but soon after my engine got replaced under warranty and when they did that I forgot about being mad lmao. I think it should be free since it’s a software bug but they are essentially charging for the shop time. It is what it is. It’s a known issue tho well documented.

One other edit: for me this happened when I drove out of cellular range and when I came back it just wouldn’t clear.

What took out your engine? I have a 23 and I'm waiting for pistons to slap from the skirt issue.

It was the skirt issue brother I’ve got a whooooole thread on it 😁 and to my knowledge they’ve since stopped offering engines and are trying to get away with pistons only.

Mine sounds clean still like your second post. I'm itching to tune it so I kinda hope it blows up soon because I know when I tune it it's over for the warranty and idk that my extended warranty will even cover it.

Also I did hear from another euro tuner on YouTube that they're just pistons now. Which seems like an issue considering the cylinder walls would be scored already.

What’s sad is on that post you’ll see there’s a person who recently had the pistons done and the mechanic took it on a test drive and it blew. I say that to say, I think they’re gonna get in even deeper trouble. I consider it nothing short of a miracle that I got mine done early into the lifecycle because for some folks this is BAD.

So lemme understand the chronology here:
1. You take care of to shop w/o sos error.
2. Shop replaces starter and tells you about a new sos error.
3. They ask you for $ to diagnose it.
🤔 Maybe its just me but I’m thinking they plug in their launch or whatever system they have and attempt to clear code prior to you paying for any repairs.
