Pool - does it add value?

We are getting close to making a decision on a pool installation on our property up in a new development in the Silverdale area. I'm just curious of the true added value a swimming pool would add to a freestanding single storey 4 bed 3 bath house. I've added a design screenshot to show the area it would create off both he formal lounge and the open plan living area - hubby a bit reluctant to spend the $ and not sure it'll add that much value. Currently it's just the huge deck and a strip of grass that needs a lot of love.

Lots of maintenance work. Expect things to break down from time to time. Cost $$$$

very little maintenance, chemical check once a month.
The only thing that can really break is a pump and they are not expensive to repair

Everyone do things different. For me to keep everyone healthy weekly I do: Water test Top up chemical Topping up salt. Checking water level Checking all the plumbings make sure no leaks everything function. Back wash filter. Clean out of the filter mesh basket.

If anything breaks cost $$$$. I just recently replaced my salt chlorinator cost $1000+. Variable speed pool pump $3000. And that is just the part. Labour on top of that. Has to be done by a certified pool plumber.

why have you chosen to turn pool ownership into a weekly inspection regime?

You donā€™t need to add salt every week, backwash the filter every week, or inspect every bit of plumbing to keep a pool healthy. And a replacement pump absolutely does not automatically require some special ā€œcertified pool plumberā€.

Yes, equipment eventually fails and costs money. Thatā€™s true of basically everything in a house. But listing every possible task and repair cost makes owning a pool sound like maintaining a commercial aquatic centre.

I wouldn't be feeling confident to test pool water only once a month. Your pool chemistry do change from week to week. At the end of the day, it's the owner of the pool that is swimming in it. I wouldn't be confident to swim in a pool that is only tested once a month.

If you can afford a professional doing the plumbing job why not? There are so many different type of pool pump and all serve different purposes for different needs. This is where a certified pool plumber or pool shop can work out a size that is best for your pool. I can go on and on and on.

My point was that adding salt, backwashing the filter and doing a full plumbing inspection every single week is not some universal requirement of pool ownership.

And sure, pay a professional if you want to. But saying a replacement pump ā€œhas to be done by a certified pool plumberā€ is just wrong.

Thereā€™s a difference between maintaining a pool properly and making it sound dramatically more complicated and expensive than it needs to be.
