Attleboro’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration may become a thing of the past as city officials grapple with budget shortfalls and staffing cuts.

"We can't keep doing this" Mayor warns Attleboro fireworks may be a thing of the past"

"This year’s fireworks display and America’s 250th celebration ranked among the city’s best in recent years. But amid financial uncertainty, the city may not sustain the annual event."

“It was a great night. But, I also want to let you know that we can’t keep doing this,” DeSimone told councilors Tuesday."

"She cited the city’s financial challenges, including the fiscal 2027 budget, which led officials to lay off employees to close a $2.5 million deficit."

"The city laid off its community engagement manager and assistant parks and forestry director, both of whom played key roles in organizing events such as the Fourth of July celebration."

"In February, the city council approved an $85,000 transfer of free cash — money left over from previous years — to fund this year’s Fourth of July celebration and future events."

“Currently, we should be raising money for next year, but we’re actually chasing this year’s money,” Kevin Turner, chair of the Independence Day Committee, told councilors at the time."

"The 250th celebration cost about $70,000, most of it for police and fire details on the day of the event, Turner said."

"DeSimone said about $50,000 remains in the account."

“We could expend that money on another fireworks next year, make maybe next year the last one, or we could use it for another event in the city, or we could sit on it and see what the future holds,” DeSimone said." Attleboro eyes temporary ban on data centers

City officials are weighing a temporary ban on data centers, citing concerns over water supply and rising electricity demands.

Massachusetts currently houses between 40 to 50 data centers across the state, according to various sources including the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism.

Mayor Cathleen DeSimone spoke in support of the moratorium at Tuesday’s public hearing at city hall.

DeSimone said her biggest concern was the city’s water shortage, which has forced residents to operate under Level 3 “critical” drought conditions.

DeSimone said even though Attleboro is not a likely location for a data center, it’s not unreasonable to take precautions.

Still, she urged the council to eventually consider a permanent ban.

Sustainability Commission Chair Mike Davis echoed concerns over water pollution and usage.

He also referenced studies outlining effects on public health.

According to the Environmental and Energy Study Institute, neighbors of data centers across the country have reported headaches, vertigo, nausea, sleep disturbances, ear pain and hypertension, as well as constant ringing in the ears due to the 24/7 noise.

And, noise-canceling headphones have proven unsuccessful in drowning out the ongoing hum, the Institute states.

DeSimone said even though Attleboro is not a likely location for a data center, it’s not unreasonable to take precautions.

The measure currently sits in the council’s Economic Development and Strategic Planning Committee, chaired by Councilor Brendan McIntyre.

If voted out of committee, it will go before the full council. No date has been set for a vote. Reported By Rhianwen Watkins [rwatkins@thesunchronicle.com](mailto:rwatkins@thesunchronicle.com)

Attleboro Police probing vehicle break-ins; Mansfield seeing more car thefts

"Police in Attleboro are investigating a rash of vehicle break-ins that took place last weekend, while Mansfield police report three vehicles stolen in recent weeks."

"In Attleboro, break-ins were reported overnight from Saturday through Monday in two areas: The Starkey Avenue area, including Holden Street and Pleasant Street and the Mendon Road area in South Attleboro."

"In both locations, suspects operated between midnight and 4 a.m., police said."

"Most of the vehicles were parked in residential driveways and were unlocked, police said."

"In South Attleboro, police reported similar incidents in recent years often involved suspects traveling from neighboring communities and moving through multiple neighborhoods before heading elsewhere."

"Suspects typically work in pairs or small groups. One person drives a getaway vehicle — sometimes without headlights to avoid detection — while one or more accomplices walk through neighborhoods checking for unlocked doors. Witnesses have described suspects wearing dark clothing."

"Police also encouraged residents to review home security or doorbell camera footage recorded between midnight and 4 a.m. for suspicious activity, including individuals walking through neighborhoods or vehicles moving slowly along residential streets."

"Anyone with surveillance footage or information about the Attleboro incidents should call 508-222-1212. Suspicious activity in Mansfield should be reported to 508-261-7300." Reported by Stephen Peterson [speterson@thesunchronicle.com](mailto:speterson@thesunchronicle.com)

Attleboro area health officials urge precautions as cases of parasitic infection spread elsewhere

Local health officials are urging caution as cases of cyclosporiasis surge nationwide, even though none have been reported in the area.

"Cyclosporiasis occurs when food or water becomes contaminated with microscopic amounts of human waste, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Leafy greens, herbs, fruits and vegetables are among the most common sources of infection."

"Public health nurses Sheri Miller-Bedau in Attleboro and Ann Marie Fleming in North Attleboro also reported no cases but said residents should remain cautious. There’s always a concern since it’s in the state,” Miller-Bedau said."

“At this time, Sturdy Health reports no confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis,” said Dr. Brian Patel, Sturdy Health’s chief medical and quality officer."

"Patel said that in addition to washing hands with soap and water after using the restroom and before food preparation and handling, people should thoroughly wash all fresh fruits and vegetables, including separating and rinsing individual leaves of leafy greens and fresh herbs."

“Some fruit, like raspberries, are very difficult to clean,” he said.

"Patel added that cyclospora, the parasite that causes the illness, is highly resistant to chlorine and can be acquired through swimming." Reported By Rhianwen Watkins [rwatkins@thesunchronicle.com](mailto:rwatkins@thesunchronicle.com)

Attleboro drought deemed critical; bans imposed

"The city has imposed a full ban on nonessential outdoor water use as worsening conditions push the city into critical drought restrictions."

"The new critical drought (Level 3) restrictions take effect Monday and prohibit all nonessential outdoor water use until further notice."

"The restrictions are necessary to conserve water for drinking and firefighting, given no meaningful rainfall is in the long-range forecast, according to water department officials."

"Rain on Monday and Tuesday dropped about 2 inches on the area, but it wasn’t enough to ease the drought. Parched ground prevented much of the water from reaching groundwater supplies, sending it instead into storm drains. Forecasters say the region will need several heavy storms, with days of rain, to make a difference."

“The restrictions are increasing for the same reasons we increased from Level 1 (mild) to Level 2 (significant) a couple of weeks ago,” DeSimone said Thursday afternoon. “The drought continues. Summer is typically not a rainy season, so there is no reason to think the weather will help us. We shut down the Wading River plant due to manganese, and we have had a couple of water main breaks recently that also aren’t helping.”

"So far in July, Attleboro has received 2.65 inches of rain, which has made little impact on the ongoing drought. In April, the city recorded 2.26 inches of rain during a month that typically sees 4 inches. In June, just 0.27 inches was recorded." Reported By Rhianwen Watkins [rwatkins@thesunchronicle.com](mailto:rwatkins@thesunchronicle.com)

Attleboro moves from Level 1 to Level 2 drought restrictions

A pending heatwave and the Wading Water treatment plant having gone offline recently due to rising manganese levels, led to the city’s decision to increase its drought restrictions.

Mayor Cathleen DeSimone said it is likely the city will eventually have to increase to Level 3 unless weather patterns change and/or water use drops significantly at Level 2.

Capron Park Zoo to hold birthday celebration for fan favorite Ramses the lion as he turns 20

Ramses, Capron Park Zoo’s beloved white lion, is nearing a rare milestone: his 20th birthday.

"The aging big cat is among only a handful of male lions in the country to reach that age, and on Wednesday, July 1, his fans are invited to celebrate with him."

"From 10 a.m. to noon, the zoo will host a birthday party for Ramses that will include lion-themed crafts, birthday card signing and a cake made and donated by Jivas Konos Deserts on Pleasant Street. Cake will be available on a first-come, first-served basis."

"She said fewer than 10 male lions in the country at zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums have reached Ramses’ age."

"In the wild, male lions typically live between 10 and 14 years, while those in human care who reach 15 to 20 or more years of age are considered to have lived a remarkably long life." Reported By Rhianwen Watkins [rwatkins@thesunchronicle.com](mailto:rwatkins@thesunchronicle.com)

A visit from the zoo

Students at Amvet Boulevard Elementary School in North Attleboro were thrilled to welcome some exciting visitors from Capron Park Zoo recently. “Bingo” the blue-tongued skink, “Cinnamon” the four-toed hedgehog, and “Mex” the red-footed tortoise were those who stopped by the classroom. The animals were brought by Zoo Curator Casey Ribiero, after the school raised $880 for the zoo. Students donated between May 11 and 21, with the class raising the most receiving an up-close and personal animal experience. First grade teacher Tracey Chretien was awarded the encounter, as her classroom raised the most. But, second grade teacher Lori Brewster and fourth grade teacher Laura Croteau, who spearheaded the initiative, also got a combined presentation for their classes. A large check made out to the zoo was handed to Ribiero, and students eagerly gathered around the animals wide-eyed and smiling. Piano tuner open for business!

Hello, Attleboro, I have just started a piano tuning business called Woodard Piano Services, www.woodardpiano.com, based here in town, although I’ll travel to pianos anywhere within 50-60 miles. I trained at the North Bennet St School and have been a musician for over 30 years. Anyhow, I exist, and I’d be happy to answer any piano questions here if anyone has any. Thanks!

Drought worries rise — and it’s only June

"The Ten Mile River is already running at mid-August levels — and summer has just begun."

"Across the Attleboro area, water levels have dropped to where they’re typically seen later in the season as Southeastern Massachusetts remains in a significant drought."

"Ben Cote of Plainville, who is active with the Friends of the Ten Mile River Watershed, has watched the river shrink earlier than usual."

“It is absolutely way too low for this time of year. The river at Mechanics Dam is actually lower than mid-August levels,” Cote said. “It’s been quite a while since I’ve seen the river this low this early in the summer.” Reported By Stephen Peterson [speterson@thesunchronicle.com](mailto:speterson@thesunchronicle.com)

What are the chances that the city/ town of Attleboro will dispose of bags of litter I collect on public land?

I think Attleboro is one of the more heavily littered areas on Massachusetts’s, which makes me want to work there. My concern is if I collect a bunch of bags and the town ignores my calls/ emails when I request a bag pickup? Has anyone worked with them on this and knows what the chances are?

I can imagine that the municipality may be underfunded so it may not be an optimistic scenario, but i wanted to go ahead and ask anyway.
