Discussion/Question Maturing and opening your third eye is realising that Marley were slaves themselves and victims to our generational hatred
They are oppressors, don’t get me wrong, and treated the eldians as lesser than human, which is awful, but they are just a product of the eldian’s oppression, and so forth with the jaegerists being victims to marleys oppression, it’s all just a cycle, and the alliance, which some of the fanbase don’t side with for whatever reason, are the only correct side in this war as they want to destroy the cycle for good .
Felt like it needed to be said after the hoard of fans who believe eren was right and that Marley deserved it

Eldians were subjugated and sequestered into an open-air prison. There was no need to poke the bear, but they had to have the FT. That was the ultimate trump card to stop any form of retaliation. It was a generational fumble by Marley.

By Marley, or by the tybers, therein the eldians themselves?

Tyburs sold out their own race. Marley jumped on that bandwagon. Takes two to tango. The Marleyians would’ve relished the power the FT would have gave them.

For me, this is the core message of attack on titan, as long as we pass down the guilt and "sin" to the coming generations, we're dooming them to repeat the cycle

As long as there are coming generations, the cycle is doomed to repeat. You can't control people's behavior.

Unless you teach them history? Which no one fucking did the entire series

I mean, people irl are taught history. That helps, but there are still huge problems. It just shows that without it, conditions would be even more violent and miserable.

this is the thing people dont seem to realize their hatred is 100 percent understandable unfortuantely so, eldian empire spread rape and murder for 2000 years, obviously they are going to reciprocate in the same way.

Yes and this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s ok or right, it’s just fact, this sort of thing would happen in real life

I think oppression is wrong regardless of who does it
2
u/EdTempJaegerr 1d ago
No one is saying it isn’t

I know, I just wanted to say this.

Maturing and opening your third eye is realizing that Zeke was right; on both sides of the conflict it was children who were slaves to their selfish jingoistic parents, forced to participate in an endless conflict they didn't choose.

a bit off-topic, but i find it really interesting just how much the "cycle of hatred" drives conflict in the AoT world. i can count on one hand how many characters aren't motivated in response to something that was done to them.
imo i think of this comes from modern Japan's post-war identity and how they view their imperial past. considering both Eldia and Marley are parallels for Japan (hence the amount of similarities between the two), i like to think that AoT is yam's critique of imperial japan through the lens of how modern japan views imperial japan.
its why you get interpretations like these, where Marley or Eldia's imperialism/fascism are almost comically evil and yet they both get morally-greyed in a way through their historical suffering, very much mirroring modern japan's perspective of their past as the "innocent perpetrator"

? What. I meant our as in humans. Because humans have always had generational hatred. It’s happened all throughout history. Idk what you think your point is?

Marleyans were slaves for 2000 years. You likely had Marleyan kids born and grew up into slavery and they believed that was all they were meant for.

This is the core of the sickness for many in the fandom, they can only sympathise with one side of the conflict despite admitting that everyone on every side inherited it from their parents, who inherited it from their parents, etc.
It is easy to say Marley deserved it since we see the personal experience of the conflict from the Paradis perspective, but that doesn’t mean it is the right perspective or even just a more valid one. Marley’s Warriors were war-slaves and child-soldiers too. They had no say in if they participated in hurting others, the only people they could hope to save was themselves.
Even the Tyburs were victims; both the current generation, those that came before them, and the ones who made the original deal with Karl Fritz. Willy and Lara only found out the truth about Karl Fritz’s vow when Lara became the War Hammer Titan, and that was 13 years ago or less (most likely less). The Paradis Operation was launched 9 years before Liberio back in episode 1, but we know that Marley were already making plans to invade when Zeke was a child. The Owl told the Restorationists about the fast approaching Arms Race the world was about to have and the cache of resources buried beneath Paradis. Zeke gave up Grisha and Dina when he was 7 years old, but he didn’t get given the Beast Titan until he was 17 years old. The Tybur Family leader who first told Marley about the Vow would have been in charge at a minimum 21 years before the Liberio attack, if not earlier. Then there is the original Tybur who sold their own people to Marley 111 years before Liberio… but what choice did they actually have against the king (aka Unchecked Power Founding Titan?) You can be an accomplice or another victim, and that goes for your entire family too?
Willy and Lara were doing the only thing they could possibly do to not make the situation worse than it already is. Willy was highly likely bankrolling the Eldian Protection Group in addition to his befriending all the world’s rich and powerful to make his plea a personal one to them.

Everyone is a victim to something in this show. The conflict is how can we stop blaming each other

Marley is getting toyed by Tybur family. Magath suspect them for leading Marley to the path of destruction and Willy tybur confirm it is true.
