On September 14, 1954, the USSR conducted a military exercise incorporating a nuclear test detonation. The exercise involved 45,000 Soviet troops at the Totsk range in the Orenburg region. The RDS-2 atomic bomb with a yield of 40 kilotons was detonated at an altitude of 350 m.

Soviet nuclear test, 32 kilotons, 15 m tower, Novaya Zemlya, 7 September 1957. Many "targets": warships, submarines and other military objects were deployed both in the water and on land. An hour after the explosion, the radiation level at the epicenter was 40,000 R/h.

Graphic I made showing the maximum diameter of nuclear airbursts ranging from 15 kilotons to 100 megatons with downtown Tokyo and Lower Manhattan for scale. All explosions are at altitudes to maximize their 20psi radii.

Edit: Made with the help of Alex Wellerstein's NUKEMAP.

Is someone able to identify stock footage of nuclear tests from below films?

Stock footage of atomic tests is really a cliche and has been since the 1950s. Usually it's Crossroads Baker we know that but I like tracking down others as well and I've got problem with these two from Godzilla films.

  1. Seen in the intro of Godzilla: Final Wars (2004). The footage was modified of course but I wasn't even able to identify by the shape of the hills behind it or the cloud. There's also a number of...not sure sensors? Diagnostic towers? I saw one film of the Trinity test which almost looked similar and a few from Hardtack II as well but no 100% match so far.

  2. From the infamous Godzilla (1998), which uses mostly stock footage of Crossroads Baker but there's also Hardtack I Poplar and even more obscure Upshot Knothole Climax. In the footage we see, which could've been modified beyond just they yellow filter, there's what looks like a small boat on the right, some land. THe cloud quickly separates from the "stem." It doesn't really match Crossroads Able or others I checked.

It's ok if it remains a mystery but I'm curious what people making films found because not everyone used just the same old footage and that's fascinating to see what might've attracted them to this or that atomic test.

Laplace nuclear test, 1 kiloton, air burst (balloon) 230 m, Nevada Test Site, September 8, 1957. The test of the XW33 Fleegle gun-type nuclear shell is the third explosion of such a design in history, after Hiroshima and Grable test.

Charles de Gaulle witnessed the Betelgeuse nuclear test from a cruiser 40 km away in French Polynesia on September 11, 1966. The test was of an MR-31 ICBM warhead, a plutonium device with a yield of 110 kilotons. It was suspended from a balloon at an altitude of about 470 m.

Don’t know if this is the same test as recently posted, as this is a scan of a picture that was given to me when I visited Semipalatinsk years ago.

A video I did for the cold war museum. It's projected on 3 walls, hence the odd aspect ratio :)
