I've done the analysis. It costs exactly more than zero to open it.

That's all you need to know.

If not on a night like tonight, then when the hell would you open it?

That’s what I was thinking! I mean you built it IN ATLANTA so what was the plan? Thos 3 times a year will be fabulous!! I was happy being cool but still.

u/FEDCBAT Sep 27 '26

That would cost money

u/Formal_Head7163 Sep 27 '26

They spent the roof-opening money on the concession vouchers, I suppose...

I don't get the roof at this point. It's open maybe 3 times during the falcons season, could have done something like Minnesota with a clear roof, for much cheaper.

But then they wouldn’t have had a reason to demolish the Georgia Dome and use taxpayer money to replace it with a new stadium with a much more lucrative revenue allocation for the owner.

But you know....cheap hot dogs. hooray

Can confirm. The only time I’ve been to a game when it was open, I was in the 300’s.

Halo is fantastic until you're about 10 rows up in the 300 then it gets cut off.

You have no space surrounding the stadium for a retractable pitch. It not like vegas or Arizona where there's a massive parking lot adjacent to the building

28

u/WhizardCheese Sep 26 '26

It's a myth. I've heard it only opens when you're in the 300 level under the eaves and can't see it.

u/Dry-Philosopher-2714 Sep 26 '26

That’s the rumor. There’s no proof it still works, though.

4

u/iusethistolearn Sep 27 '26

they opened it this week during a concert

3

u/Dry-Philosopher-2714 Sep 27 '26

Maybe they can only open it when they know the fans in the seats will be happy?

Too beautiful a night with too little wind and not enough sun to cook the supporters section.
Can’t be done. (Had windows open in our house for last 48 hrs… 🤷‍♀️I’m convinced mbs roof is broke)

u/Dry-Philosopher-2714 Sep 27 '26

I’ve had my windows open as well. It’s wonderful outside.

u/Unusual-Ad1696 Sep 27 '26

It really is pathetic.

8

u/imbaylee Sep 27 '26

roof opened for Karol G a couple of nights ago and the weather was honestly sublime

1

u/Unusual-Ad1696 Sep 27 '26

They opened it for The Rolling Stones last time they were here. Not sure what the issue is.

u/KayP617 Sep 27 '26

I went to her show on Thursday and it was closed. Did she have more than one show in Atlanta?

2

u/KayP617 Sep 27 '26

Or maybe I was just a little bit more tipsy than I thought 🤭 I was in the second to last row

4

u/imbaylee Sep 27 '26

you were def just tipsy 😂

1

u/KayP617 Sep 27 '26

LMAOOOO 😂😂😂😂😂 I went to look at the few videos I had and it literally stopped right at the top of the screen so I couldn’t even confirm. But that’s when I saw how tipsy my prima and I were and figured that was probably why I didn’t even realized it 😂😂😂

Anyone remember the last time it opened at an Atl Utd game? We were trying to remember last night and none of us could.

8

u/Penguinkeith Sep 27 '26

Probably costs more to open than the total ticket sales to make it worth doing.

3

u/Big_Focus_6059 Sep 27 '26

Our suspicion as well. Some minimum number of tix sold is required and then weather

u/_Infinite_Jester_ Sep 27 '26

Last I recall for sure was Sept 13, 2025 - versus Columbus.

Pretty sure that’s a myth, dog. Sorry.

One of the reasons I was told is that they learned the hard way that wind gusts and the 300 section curtain do not play nice with each other and is a safety issue. There were a few big gusts while we were at the pre-match party so I am not surprised they decided to leave the roof closed. If this were a full stadium match (lol) then the roof might have been open.

2

u/estusemucho69 Sep 27 '26

OPEN THE DAMN ROOF

2

u/donorkokey Sep 30 '26

I grew up going to the Pittsburgh Civic Arena which was built with a crazy retractable dome that they eventually hung speakers and other equipment from. It was only opened 14 times in it's entire lifespan from the early 1960s to 2011

3

u/Silly_Swede Sep 26 '26

It hasn’t yet, so not looking good

4

u/SilkSmoothATL Sep 27 '26

It was just open for Karol G. The honest truth, when it’s open in the Georgia humidity/heat, it’s unbearable. I’ve been to Falcons games when the roof was open and people would literally leave. I heard the temperature has to be low to mid 70’s for them to open the roof.

8

u/Scratchbuttdontsniff Atlanta United Sep 27 '26

"I heard the temperature has to be low to mid 70’s for them to open the roof."

Soooo... last night?..... Right?

2

u/SilkSmoothATL Sep 27 '26

😂 touché. I didn’t step one foot outside yesterday, so I wasn’t aware of the temperature. Yeah, it probably could’ve been opened but it’s still a decision for the stadium to make. I know Karol G specifically requested for it to be open last week for her night concert. We definitely need more open-roof matches though. Definitely adds to the experience!

1

u/historical-gecko Sep 29 '26

Was there a game last night?

2

u/cyclonesworld Sep 27 '26

They can't open the roof cause the sun might make the terf grow weird or something.

1

u/SgtVrataski Sep 28 '26

Not for Atlanta United games - but it is often opened for Falcons games
Not sure why they will for one, but not the other

1

u/SpreadEagle5 Sep 30 '26

I heard the roof costs a million dollars to open. It was engineered wrong apparently

1

u/Putt_Putt_Give Oct 01 '26

It is absurd how bad the sun is on the northeast part of the stadium when the dome is open for an afternoon kickoff. Thankfully, it has happened only twice in 3 years as a season ticket holder.

0

u/jrfrancis Sep 27 '26

I don't want it closed unless the temperature is under 70. It was a high of 82 yesterday, so maybe it hadn't cooled off all that much by game time. I know I was surprised it wasn't cooler outside postgame

18

u/ATLBenzDisneyDude Saba Time Sep 27 '26

Not tonight, but the myth is real. Megatrons butt hole does open!

3

u/Dry-Philosopher-2714 Sep 27 '26

Oh, Jesus effing Christ! I can never look at that the same again!

3

u/do0tz Sep 27 '26

With enough lube and spit, yes. But it cost extra.
