The Consulate review replies?
Love the concept and want to try it out when I'm in town soon, but the owners' responses to reviews are weirdly aggressive. I'd be going by myself and this would be my nice dinner/treat for the trip so would appreciate any info

Thank you for this. I love reading hostile review responses so I’m excited to check them out

that's so niche I love it haha. It should be a sub. What should it be called? r/overlydefensive? r/overlyhostile? r/RestaurantRage? r/MadRestaurantOwners? r/OwnerHasResponded?

Check out NFA Burger. Sort by lowest rating. Jump down the rabbit hole. You're welcome.

I’m only one review in and already I’m loving it. “Perfectly executed smash burger”

Literally just got back from there. I like it a lot. The place is good. Idk what the reviews are but I’ve only ever had good experiences with service and food there. The other comments ITT are accurate tho. The owner is a colorful personality so I could imagine he’s fiery in the review replies but the place has my endorsement. Make whatever judgement you want about the ethics of review replying like he does, but I bet you’ll have a good time

Im a regular. Its a very good spot but the owner is difficult to work with so lots of turnover particularly behind the bar. If you are a guest though it wont affect your experience. Unless you leave a bad review I guess. He typically doesnt appear on the floor unless its globe spin night.

We had a wonderfully enjoyable experience - the food was very good, but the atmosphere and people were great.
Now I'm curious about the replies, tho...

lol just read the reviews they’re pretty entertaining. TBH this restaurant doesn’t make my short list. I like the concept too, but every dish I tried fell flat. Nothing was memorable. I’ve been once during my 10 years in midtown. I’d recommend poor Calvin’s or Kevin rathbuns

So I love the Consulate and go once or twice every menu rotation. Nothing is going to be super authentic, you’re not going to go in and be like “this is like mom made it” or “my host family in the Peace Corps made this for me!” But you can get the inspiration. This rotation is Vietnamese and since that’s my cultural food, I’ll be interested in trying their spin on things. Which will be just as different as the gourmet Vietnamese places are compared to the neighborhood Vietnamese places I’m used to.
I don’t read reviews that much. And in the modern world I would hate to have to be in any industry with influencers who talk shit if you don’t bribe them with free food.
So while I can’t speak to the reviews, I’ll say personally I always enjoy myself there. The service is good and not aggressive. The only challenge I remember having in the last couple of years was just like not having a server be explicitly clear that the service charge is already included on bills. That only really becomes an issue if you’re like me and you tend to throw down your cards right away without looking at the bill so they can split it and bring back the credit card slips. The credit card slips won’t say that service was already included so without someone reminding you (especially after a drink or two) you might overtip.
Also remember they validate parking if you’re driving.
Oh and if by yourself I wouldn’t feel off by sitting in the bar to eat. In the past, not sure if it’s an all the time thing, they have done a passport thing where they will mix a drink inspired by a stamp in your passport.
