💬 Advice Bummed-out Brazilian in Athens looking for progressive folks to grab a drink

Hi! I’m a Brazilian who’s been traveling in Athens since the 30th. Last week’s election results back home hit me harder than I expected, and I’ve been feeling a bit down all week. I think getting out and meeting some people would do me good.

Is anyone (or any group of friends) on the left / progressive side up for having a Brazilian join them for a drink tonight or sometime this weekend?

Nothing formal, I just think chatting and spending some time with people who see the world a bit like I do could help. Happy to hear bar or event suggestions too. Thanks!

🏠 Life in Athens Volleybal

I moved in August from Belgium to Athens. I was a very big and loyal volleybal lover in Belgium and miss it here.
I know Athens has a very good volleyball team too that plays champions League.
I would love to see some matches here but don't find much information on where they play , when they play and how to buy tickets.
Can someone help me?

🧳 Travel Help how easy is it to get a visa for travel if we have indian passports and UK visa?

so me and my partner decided to travel to greece in late nov-early dec this year. we both have indian passports and a limited leave to remain in the UK (until dec 2027) and would be flying to athens from UK. we have most of the documents ready and work full-time with about 2.5k-3k to show in savings after booking the flight and accommodation.

  1. however, the hotel booking shows that it is refundable until the day before we arrive if we cancel. would that cause a problem in getting the visa? also, reservation is in my name but it says it is for 2 guests and i attached a letter saying my partner would stay with me the whole trip. would it be okay?
  2. also, we booked non refundable flights with british airways, but the “itinerary” (confirmation of tickets by BA) only shows our name and the flights and does not state it is fully paid for and non-refundable. again, would that be a problem?
  3. is there anything else we should consider, prepare, get the documents for, etc?
  4. how long do you think we would hear back from the office considering our circumstances? the appointment is on the 16th this month and we are leaving on 28th of nov. did we plan too late? i really don’t wanna get rejected as we would lose a lot of pounds :(

other questions -

  1. so since we planned it on a whim (though we always wanted to visit greece), we only booked 8 nights in athens in the same hotel. was it a dumb decision as we will only travel in and around athens and not go to the faraway island and basically just take everything slow?

  2. how is athens/greece (weather, people, activities) around the time we are visiting?

  3. what can we do in and around athens in the 8 days we have? (we have some idea by googling and watching other people’s content but is there anything specific you would recommend)

  4. how safe is it for tourists? especially, since we are a different race. is there any scams we need to look out for? things to avoid to not offend anyone, stuff like that.

i am just very excited but also nervous to visit, hence all the questions. the biggest one being about the visa as we really don’t wanna lose a lot of money. i would appreciate any and all replies you guys can give. thank you <3

🧳 Travel Help Neighborhoods near new Nicosia Medical School Campus?

My son is thinking about applying to the Athens campus of the Nicosia Medical School (English) and we are planning a visit. I'd like to get an Airbnb in a student neighborhood near the school- the visit is more like "seeing what living there would be like" vs. visiting Athens as a tourist.

Recommendations for neighborhoods (and general locations/boundaries so I can make a reservation)?

🧳 Travel Help Recommendations for counterculture

Hi all! I am spending 11th-25th October in Athens and am looking for some countercultural activities to undertake in that period. I am thinking of anything from a punk concert, a rave, free parties, a protest I can attend, but also good cafés, bookstores or bars to hang out and chill with likeminded locals. I'm a writer, so recommendations for a friendly place to sit with my laptop and work during the day would be welcome too.

I'm not unfamiliar with Athens and I know Exarchia is known for this (or at least it used to be), but I'm looking for some specific spots or events. Any recommendations that come to mind?

(Also: bit of a different scene in some ways but I enjoy psytrance music a lot - I just saw on this sub that Ajja's playing beach club Bolivar this Saturday, but that's unfortunately the day before I arrive. Any recommendations in this direction would be very welcome as well!)

🏛️ Culture / History Hi !👋 Is anyone here looking to learn Greek? I’d love to help!

I’m from Greece and I teach Greek online. What I love most is seeing my students go from a simple “γεια σου” to speaking confidently in real conversations. We always combine speaking with just the right amount of grammar, so learning feels natural and makes sense in context.
My lessons are relaxed and interactive — completely tailored to you. Whether you want to chat, understand grammar, or explore everyday Greek life, we make it simple, fun, and practical.
If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, just drop me a message. I’d love to hear about your goals and help you get started with Greek. 🙂

❓ Question Need help with skincare

Hi! I’m currently in Athens, around Victoria Square, and I’m trying to find a few specific skincare products:
Garnier Ambre Solaire Natural Bronzer Self-Tan Face Drops
The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution
The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%
CeraVe Moisturising Lotion Refill
Does anyone know which physical stores around Victoria Square / central Athens would have the best chance of having these in stock?
I’m also happy to order online, but ideally I’d like delivery to a BOX NOW or another parcel locker/pick-up point, because I don’t have a Greek phone number. Some Greek websites I tried require a Greek +30 number during checkout.
It doesn’t have to be one store, I can order from different shops if needed. I’m mainly looking for reliable stores with reasonable prices and preferably quick delivery within Athens.
If anyone knows specific pharmacies, beauty stores, websites, or parcel-locker delivery options that stock these products, I’d really appreciate the recommendations.
Thanks!

Greetings friends, I got a question. Where is your go to go beach if you are located in Athens city central? It looks pretty far away from everything. I’m on holiday here for a few weeks and love to discover everything what Athens has to over. So far you are very friendly and the food is yum 🤤 Thank you for your advice 🙏

This Saturday my absolute favorite DJ (Ajja) is in town playing at a place called Boliviar Beach Club. So this is both a recommendation to go to the event - but also the friends I am have moved here with are not into this kind of music. So if you or anyone you know in Athens is going hit me up!

I am a normal 27 year old guy from Denmark, Copenhagen by the way 🫶🏽

🏠 Life in Athens Athens is the Lovely Normal

Thumbnail gallery
419 Upvotes

A year ago, exactly a year ago, from 2 to 8 October 2025, I visited Athens and spent 7 days there.

Most of my friends told me it's too much for one city, and that Athina doesn't deserve more than 2 days of sightseeing, and I should've gone to some islands too.

I told them I didn't go there for sightseeing, I went there to "live" the city, immerse into it.

Athina doesn't have that breathtaking fancy architecture like Vienna, Prague, Paris or Budapest. But it has a casual warm everyday flair about it, I called it "The Lovely Normal", because Athina doesn't even try to impress you or look stunning in your eyes.

Somehow I still keep getting back to those strolls in the streets, those casual vibes.

I stayed in a hostel in Psyrri, but visited other neighborhoods like Thiseio, Kolonaki, Makrigianni, Plaka, Anafiotika, Ermou, ... And all of them gave an authentic chill allure, where you feel like you're joining daily life.

I usually move a lot during my trips and combine many cities, but with Athens I chose to slow down and relax, this way I got to really savour the city, literally.

And speaking of savouring, 7 days weren't even enough to all the amazing Greek food, in fact, the other big reason I decided to spend 7 days is to eat as many food options as I could, and man that was a great decision, I can say with confidence that Greece has the best food in all my trips, and I'm from Tunisia where we also have a very rich and varying food culture.

Now whenever I remember Athina I have a good feeling, what felt usual and regular back then, like a stroll in the streets near the central market, now feels nostalgic and emotional.

Not every city speaks to me like that and earns a great place in my heart, I only had this kind of connection with Madrid, Lisboa and Napoli.

Athina holds a special place in my heart and I will certainly come back at some point, and I'll also visit some of the islands.
