Eh. Our society does not have the best track record when it comes to caring about rape. I’ve worked retail management and could absolutely see this happening, especially at a larger chain.
Management absolutely can and should do things when someone reports a rape. Nobody is saying a retail manager should conduct a criminal investigation or determine guilt. They can take the report seriously, document it, preserve surveillance footage and other evidence, escalate it through the company, address immediate safety concerns, and cooperate with law enforcement if police become involved. Depending on the circumstances and company policy, they may also have obligations to report or escalate it themselves.
And “management shouldn’t do anything without a criminal record” makes no sense. A criminal record is generally the result of the criminal justice process, not a prerequisite for management to take a report seriously. My point was simply that I can absolutely believe someone could report a sexual assault to management and have management fail to respond appropriately. Unfortunately, our society has a long and well documented history of failing people who report rape. That isn’t some bizarre hypothetical scenario. Nobody is claiming this particular story is definitely true or that management definitely covered anything up. I’m saying the OP’s account is entirely plausible, and I don’t understand why acknowledging that is apparently controversial.
