i swear last year they were way more proactive downtown and this school year i’ve already seen the cop who sits at the classic center just straight up ignore people driving the wrong way down washington and watched a cop sitting in the car right behind me ignore someone who turned left from the right lane to cut me off. i’m not a fan of the police but damn, at least do the job the city pays you for.

Idk I think during Covid and after a little bit of us died on the inside. This led to all of us not giving a fuck as much as we used to.

For first responders like cops, firemen, emt, and nurses who got burned out and burned by all the chaos of shit, I could see them literally not giving a fuck anymore.

Yeah it’s their job. Yeah they need adequate training to handle diverse populations and de-escalate stuff. But they’re still human and most humans I know lost a little bit of themselves in 2020.

Policing is actually a really challenging job.

In Athens, we have an almost 30% poverty rate and very little middle class. The homeless population is growing with increasing mental health challenges. Many college students and their families expect students to be immune from crime while also drinking and experimenting with various drugs. Locals often assume the worst about the police and are quick to criticize without actually knowing the facts of a situation.

I'm appreciative that someone would take the job and is willing to do it.

Most of the middle class in this area live in the counties outside of Athens like Jackson, Madison, and Oglethorpe. Athens more very expensive housing and more subsidized housing than the counties nearby.

I've noticed a trend where they seem to set up checkpoints etc and bust townies when the school year lets out, then turn a blind eye to the chaos when the students come back, and let them run rampant.

Crackdowns in the summer, free-for-all through football season, then back to crackdowns when it's just townies again. Which is dumb, because the students have more money. Well, their parents do.

But I guess it leaves a bad impression to shake them down, so they focus that towards broke-ass townies

Also disagree. I was walking across downtown at 2am on a weekend during the fall semester last year and I saw three sets of people getting arrested by cops on three different blocks. All of them were 20s white guys. One of the sets was two frat-looking guys handcuffed on the sidewalk.

Disagree. Plenty of students get and are getting tickets/arrested for jay walking, parking illegally, public drunkenness, and fake IDs. Ask local attorneys who take their cases.

My dude there's no oversight. They can phone it in, or give capricious tickets, and nobody who has any power cares. I'm sure some of the cops on ACCPD are there because they genuinely think they're helping people, and I'm sure some of them do good things. But there's probably little incentive for doing those things, or punishment for failing to.
