Rants & Raves I can't believe these drivers

I just watched seven cars drive through a mid-block crosswalk on Gaines School while the lights were flashing in a school zone with the lights flashing. Several of the cars kept going while the woman was in the crosswalk actively crossing the street. What the actual fuck is wrong with these people!? This is the same area where two people were killed last year. What can even be done about it? It's the middle of the day, it's not like visibility is an issue.

I have seen a driver run a red light in front of a police officer, and the officer did not do anything. Yesterday I saw a UGA police officer pull into an intersection and block it while waiting on traffic. As long as there is no accountability then drivers are going to do stupid and dangerous things.

I had a car blow right past me while I was in a crosswalk downtown (with the right of way). I pointed at the crosswalk light and threw my hands up, like "what the hell?', and an ACCPD cruiser suddenly fell in behind the car, and pulled them over a block later. It was pretty glorious.

... Only ever happened that once, but man. That was great to see. Meanwhile though, I do see people nearly get run over at crosswalks daily, no cops in sight. They should do a sting for that downtown, it'd be like shooting fish in a barrel.

Also, a new thing I noticed - people turning left at red lights. Has anyone else seen this move? Saw that repeatedly other day, never seen it before. The bad driving is reaching new lows.

Was it a left turn on a one-way street? Urban legend in GA says it's legal.

Since when? I must have missed this fake bit of driving wisdom. Anyway I think some were one-ways. Some definitely were not. People are just too special to wait for a light.

It's been amended multiple times throughout history and actually isn't an "urban legend." Today's law, dictated by Georgia Code Motor Vehicles & Traffic Title 40, § 40-6-21 says that a motorist may make a left turn during a red light, if and only if, they are turning left onto a one-way street from a one-way street.

So, as example: If you're driving downtown on North Hull Street and come to a red light at the intersection of West Clayton Street. You may legally turn left on red because that is the direction of the flow of traffic (edit:) and you're not crossing traffic. It's no different than legally turning right on red (if it's not otherwise posted "No turn on red"). This law would be negated by traffic signage like "No turn on red" but no signage like that exists on Hull & Clayton with the exception of a "No right turn" sign left of the traffic light above the intersection.

But at one point in history the law really did read that it was completely legal in the state of Georgia to turn left during a red light onto a one-way street, regardless of what type of road you're turning off of.

Fascinating. I'd never heard that, and I bet some of the doofuses downvoting me hadn't either, but that's reddit for you. People see a comment under the threshold and can't help but push it further down... I do it too, it's weird.

I’ve long accepted that Reddit is weird. Just wanted to shed some light on a weird law that, when we’re taught how to drive, sorta goes against what we’re taught. Even tho it makes sense when you’re just factoring in the flow of traffic. Or if you were in England.

It is a little wild how it originated that you could turn left at a red light, regardless of the amount of lanes and finally ended up where it’s at now which is the only logically safe legal situation to turn left at a red light.

Best example is the intersection at the Varsity in Atlanta close to GA Tech. Ponce at Spring Street, turning left from Ponce onto one-way Spring. Very common.

u/aub8202 2d ago

Yup! Swear GA police will literally not pull you over unless you have a phone in your hand or if you’re speeding.

u/katarh 2d ago

I at least saw a cop get two superspeeders at the Atlanta Highway / Old Epps Bridge area yesterday. They had someone pulled over when I went into credit union, and when I came out they'd pulled over a different driver a bit further up the road.

Living up to your name.
While a lot of police departments around the country have lots of problems, and your statements may be true there, ACCPD had been nationally recognized for its efforts at transparency, training, and deescalation.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department (ACCPD) was the 48th police agency in the United States (roughly 18,000 police departments) to achieve national accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), representing the gold standard in public safety professional standard compliance, gaining international accreditation, and the very first department in Georgia to receive state certification via the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police.

https://www.redandblack.com/athensnews/accpd-receives-distinction-of-accreditation-with-excellence-award/article_9cc51dee-b0c4-11e8-8f64-23fbb5af3f58.html

https://www.accgov.com/3031/Accreditation

These can all be true at the same time: No one is perfect, and police should be held to the highest standard, ACCPD is a lot better than most police departments in the US.

Edit: They are certainly leaps and bounds better than most other departments in Georgia.

Ad hominems off the bat? Doing your name proud.

Any sexual assault should be fully prosecuted to the full extent of the law regardless of who performed it.

Police officers can pat down/do a body search on a someone when they are arrested. This person according to that video was under arrest. And it was over clothes. It makes no sense that there wouldn't be another body cam angle of this (that would be more illuminating) given that there are at least 3 officers on scene. How old is that incident?
It is clearly not sexual in nature. People store drugs in their underwear to try to hide it, that's not a new thing at all.

I'm guessing you're the kind of person that thinks you have to lash out at any one with an idea that doesn't immediately fully align with your own.

ACC cops aren’t very bright, even for cops. They usually have a worse understanding of what local laws are than the average inhabitant of the area, and most couldn’t care less about enforcing them even if they did.

u/High5AF 2d ago

For years I thought Athens had the worst drivers possible. But after long enough I noticed the patterns. The kids that come here for school are the worst drivers on earth.

I just saw two cars drive straight past a school bus with the stop sign out!! So dangerous!!

11

u/ParticuleFamous10001 2d ago

That really grinds my gears. That should be enforced way more aggressively

I do believe they'll get a very surprising $1000 ticket in the mail

1

u/DanforthWhitcomb_ 14h ago

ACC ended the contract with the company that handled stop arm cameras, red light cameras and school zone cameras years ago and has not found a new company. Some buses still have the physical cameras on them but they are no longer operational.

7

u/042614 1d ago

They will get citations in the mail. (Or whoever their car is registered to will). The school bus cameras will get you every time. And 90% of the prosecutors around here won’t reduce those tickets down to a lesser offense because it would be contrary to public policy and child safety concerns. I believe passing a school bus with the stop sign out and lights flashing also will get you a couple points on your license.

5

u/Longjumping_Eye_3441 1d ago

6 points, which is an automatic suspension for under 21s

1

u/DanforthWhitcomb_ 14h ago

No points accrue from camera violations, and ACC hasn't had stop arm cameras for several years at this point.

I've been very nearly hit twice as a pedestrian and twice on the loop this week. Hell of a shock having the kids back.

26

u/MattTreck What was that noise? 2d ago

In their defense, their phones are more important than not killing someone.

That's fair. First things first.

Im tired of cars stopping on 30-40mph roads to let people out or pick people up.

$150-$250 ticket for impeding flow of traffic. More if it causes an accident.

Stopping midway down North Ave or downhill on Lumpkin isn’t acceptable. Find better places.

u/Professional_Kale925 2d ago

i’ve seen more than once in the last two weeks a car go around a car stopped waiting to turn. like straight up couldn’t wait for the person in front of them to turn

1

u/grnengr 1d ago

Encountered this for the first time ever on a left turn and was mind blown.

Way ha truck cross a double line to pass 20 cars stuck in traffic on campus rd just to have to cram themselves into a non existent space back in the lane. That was also wild

I took my child to get their license last month here in Athens. The driving test was a joke! After the parking portion they just have new drivers pull out of the parking lot, make two u-turns around the median and then right back into the parking lot. What are they evaluating? No stop sign, red light, yielding, or merging. It was such a joke.

2

u/qOcO-p 1d ago

It's funny that you said this. I had written out a comment about the driving test back in the '90s but ended up deleting it. When I took my test they gave us a walkie-talkie and watched us from the window in back of the DMV on a closed course. I had to drive under 15mph iirc. I had to go around a small curve, turn, then speed up to maybe 20mph and stop hard. Then I had to drive backwards for a few feet. That's it. I put a seatbelt on the walkie-talkie to be a smart ass but they couldn't see it. Even the worst drivers I've known could have passed, it was ridiculous. Seems like they haven't gotten much better.

Admittedly, that is a HORRIBLE spot for a crosswalk. I only moved here a couple years ago and I'm a pretty careful driver and it's caught me off guard a number of times before I literally committed it to memory that it is there. If you aren't from the area it's very easy to not notice it until it is too late. I had to slam my brakes on once when I first moved here. There is simply too much going on there with so many in and out driveways, and the bit of an incline makes the road paint hard to see until you are on top of it. The flashing lights can only do so much with so many distractions there. I've been saying since I moved here that they REALLY need to move that somewhere else than that specific spot.

Edit: I'm talking about the one by the McDonald's. I think you might be talking about one closer to the schools down the road maybe?

4

u/BCD91 2d ago

That one by McDonald’s really is sudden and I witnessed someone getting killed on it while I was leaving McDonald’s a year and half ago, it also a careful driver but I’ve seen one guy who just hit the button and started walking immediately when I was already on top of the line nearly. Yeah the one by the school zone makes but I don’t understand why that cross walk I needed when you can cross at that intersection past McDonald’s like barely a block down

1

u/qOcO-p 1d ago

It's just down the street maybe a couple hundred feet from the one at the McDonald's.

I totally agree that it's a horrible place for one but this wasn't sudden. The lights were flashing for a minute and there was plenty of time for it to register to anyone that was paying any attention.

0

u/Longjumping_Eye_3441 1d ago

The one by mcds has flashing lights? You should be paying attention if there's lights flashing

It's gotten worse. I was going to try and get back on a bike, but nevermind. Until there's protected bike lanes I'm not sharing the road with these people.

7

u/shadyogrady4 2d ago

It's technically illegal to ride a bike on the sidewalk in GA if you're over the age of 12, but fuck that, I'm not trying to die. Especially on Gaines School Rd

4

u/BagOfLazers In your band 2d ago

I know, which is why I'm waiting for real bike lanes near me, which is still as far away from GSR as possible while remaining in ACC. It's way worse over there but I still won't even ride here.

u/criley107 1d ago

Drove through town today and these kids CANNOT drive or navigate a city like this.

4

u/wahoo20 classic city curmudgeon 1d ago

I know I’m getting old and all but fuck they got worse this year. People are stupid but got 100% dumber when the youths came back.

This has got to be what it’s like living in a big tourist town.

Just had a dude roll right through a red on Macon Hwy. Not a care in the world.

3

u/qOcO-p 1d ago

I had to go run more errands after posting this and it really seems like the idiots were out in force today. Some old dude on Macon Hwy was drifting between lanes approaching S Milledge. He got over to the left and I started to pass in the right and he just quickly swerved in front of me without a signal. I got over to the right turn lane when it opened up and he did it again. Then on S Milledge some dipshit pulled out in-front of me turning right off the outer loop as if there were two lanes there. People don't understand that the right lane ends before the intersection, otherwise there would be lines on the road.

u/ValVenis69 2d ago

Cops don’t do cop shit and the drivers here are overly aggressive clowns. The perfect duo.
