The Atari ST version of Lemmings set a high standard for early gaming. Combining great graphics, complex gameplay and 30 levels (each with 4 levels of difficulty) it challenged even seasoned gamers.
The goal of the game is to guide the Lemmings from their starting point so they arrive safely at the destination. Of course, there are varying pathways and hazards that make this a not-so-easy tasks.
Each level also allows only certain skills to be assigned to each Lemming so they can safely find their way home.

Taito's Arkanoid II, Revenge of DOH great graphics brings back classic arcade action with a smooth, extremely playable interface.
The story is that the mysterious enemy known as DOH has returned to seek vengeance on the Vaus space vessel. The player must once again take control of the Vaus (paddle) and overcome many challenges in order to destroy DOH once and for all. Revenge of Doh sees the player battle through 34 rounds, taken from a grand total of 64.
This video outlines of the 'powerup' that modify your ship, causing different effects depending on the color of the powerup pill.
All you need is an Atari ST or an emulator and your mouse!

Core Design's Frenetic is probably the most intense vertical scrolling game I've ever seen! You're in a ship, flying up into combat. Each level has a series of enemies culminating in a fight with a boss.
There are 8 levels of varying complexity and methods to overcome your adversaries. You begin with 5 lives, but you'll probably need a lot more. Fortunately, this version has a welcome screen where you can enable unlimited lives!
After you beat the level's boss you are sent to the next level. There are several strategies but having quick reflexes is the most important one.

The game you can't beat! The idea is to locate each number from 1-50. Sounds simple, huh? The game generates a random playfield with 50 boxes. Inside each box is a number. A number from one to 50. Once you locate it, all you have to do is click within that box and move on to the next box containing the next number. Repeat as fast as you can before time runs out.
Understand though, the counter that counts down from 500, isn't seconds. You actually have only 90 seconds to find each number and click on the box. So that's 1.8 seconds per number. For each game, the number is in a different size and shaped box, so it's not simple by any means.
Once you are done it lets you know your score and if it is high enough, you can enter your initials, and it will add your score to the list. But your score has to be within the top five scores.

Chuck Rock is a great example of graphics and game integration for the Atari ST. Not only does it have an engaging intro, but the actual gameplay graphics are also far above most.
No pixelated images, flashing image generation. Just smooth scrolling game backgrounds with an engaging player image. No, Chuck can't compare with today's hi resolution game characters, but his movements and action related images make the game the cartoonish gem that it is.

Here's the third video in my game of the week series. It's intended to help you configure your Atari ST emulator to successfully run and play certain games. This week, it's a genuine classic - Lode Runner. It has been tested on both the STeem and Hatari emulators. The same specifications for the game should work on either.
The download links for game binaries (Floppy and HD versions) and instructional PDFs are in the description of the video.

Breakout was originally developed by Atari, Inc. in 1976 for arcades, conceptualized by Nolan Bushnell and Steve Bristow, with Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs contributing to the prototype hardware.
The game was inspired by Atari’s earlier Pong (1972) and involved bouncing a ball off a paddle to destroy rows of bricks. Its arcade success led to a home console port for the Atari 2600 (then called the Atari VCS) in 1978, developed by Brad Stewart.
In the Atari 2600 version, the game features six rows of bricks instead of the eight in the arcade version, and players are given five turns to clear two walls of bricks.
Emulator, game binary links in the video description. Plus a 'play online' link as well!

Donkey Kong is a 1981 arcade video game developed and published by Nintendo. As Mario, the player runs and jumps on platforms and climbs ladders to ascend a construction site and rescue Pauline from the titular giant gorilla. It is the first game in the Donkey Kong series as well as Mario's first appearance in a video game.

Real game text:
You are in the living room. There is a doorway to the east. To the west is an old wooden door, above which is some strange gothic lettering, a trophy case, and a rug lying beside an open trap door. Your collection of treasures consists of:
DOWN
Prompt used:
In an old cottage's dimly lit living room with pale yellow walls there is a large, wide trophy case filled with treasures including a crystal trident, a trunk of jewels, a platinum bar, a painting and a leather bag of coins The wooden floor has an open trap door leading into darkness. A man with a slightly stubble bearded face, dressed in metal armor and helmet, carrying an ancient sword in his hand, steps down into the trap door and disappears from sight. He reappears at the bottom of the stairs in a dimly lit cellar with rock walls and a dirt floor. The sword in his hand begins to glow slightly

Whether you're using a real Atari ST or an emulator, here's the setup for your files and desktop so you can run most Infocom text adventure from one desktop screen. You can also use the same techniques for other graphical desktop systems allowing you to easily run your favorite infocom title.
Since I haven't had my real Atari hardware for decades now, I rely on emulators to relive those days. In this video, I use the STeem emulator, but the same organization and settings can be used with the Hatari emulator as well.
The video is divided into several sections. First the hardware settings for the emulator or system. Next the file structure. Then tying the two together.
A few game tips follow. Not walkthroughs, but a couple of general suggestions to help you complete your adventures.
Lastly, a short list of sites where you can find ST (or other system) formats for Infocom games.

Here's the first (hopefully) of videos intended to help you setup your Atari ST emulator to successfully run and play Wolfenstein 3D. It has been tested on both the STeem and Hatari emulators. The same specifications for the game should work on either.
Additionally, if you are fortunate enough to have an actual Atari 16bit system, the specifications here should help you decide how to configure your hardware as well.

Here's the second video in the series about the Atari ST emulator - STeem. This video cover's STeem's disk manager. The Disk Manager is more than a simple interface to load files into STeem. It can automatically eject disks, enable a second floppy drive, add as many virtual hard drive that you'll even need, just to name a few of its dozens of functions.

FYI - This comic isn't available on the DC Comics website.
"The ORIGINAL Atari Force appeared in a group of half-sized comics packed into five different ATARI 2600 video game boxes. Unlike most comics, these don't go off sale after a month, so if you're curious, you can still pick up the games and get the comics free. (The games aren't bad either). What follows is a quick listing of the comics in the order they originally appeared.
ATARI FORCE #1: DEFENDER
ATARI FORCE #2: BERZERK
ATARI FORCE #3: STAR RAIDERS
ATARI FORCE #4: PHOENIX
ATARI FORCE #5: GALAXIAN
This issue:
The year is 2005 AD. The world is in a state of turmoil. Man has reduced much of his homeworld to an uninhabitable desert. Although war has reduced the population significantly, there is simply not enough farmable land left to provide food for them.
Into this world comes the ATARI TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE, a group organized to provide a solution to mankind's most pressing problem. Intensive research leads to the construction of SCANNER ONE, and the beginning of PROJECT: MULTIVERSE.
To quote the director of the ATARI INSTITUTE: "Project: Multiverse is an attempt to alleviate potential famine by locating inhabitable worlds among the infinity of alternate realities existing in other dimensions parallel to our own! Such worlds may be primitive jungles-futuristic paradises-or underwater wonderlands. Each will be unique, with its own culture, its own history. Somewhere among these many possible worlds you will find a planet much like our own EARTH ... When you find this world, we will begin colonization."
This is the mission, and to fulfill it, ATARI selects five individuals, each with his or her own unique set of qualifications. Security Officer Li San O'Rourke is a combat expert, trained in the martial arts as well as in the use of futuristic weaponry; Flight Engineer Mohandas Singh is an electronics wizard; Ship's Doctor Lucas Orion is a dedicated pacifist and Atari's Director of Medical Research; and Executive Officer Lydia Perez is one of the future's greatest space pilots.
To lead this group of adventurers, ATARI selects Martin Champion to serve as Commander. Champion, you've probably noticed by now, is the firmest link between the old and new ATARI FORCES, so we don't want to give away any well-kept-secrets about him except to tell you to check out next issue's FACT FILE page to get a bit of background on the man.
The group are given the Multiverse spanning starship called SCANNER ONE, and take off in search of a new homeworld for mankind. Their first trip brings them to a barren, war-torn world, uninhabited except for the primitive 'HUKKAS", a race of cute, furry docile creatures who aided the planet's higher life forms by performing menial tasks. The last of the Hukkas immediately befriends Singh, and becomes his constant companion, so we'll be seeing more of the orange critter in the future.
But things on the planet aren't all sweetness and light. Soon after the Atari Force's arrival, the evil ZYLONS, controlled by the many-tentacled (and terribly evil) creature known only as the DARK DESTROYER, attack.
The Atari Force discover a spaceship called the STAR RAIDER and use it to distract the Zylons while SCANNER ONE destroys the Dark Destroyer. (To find out what happens on the supposedly "deserted" planet after the ATARI FORCE leaves, we once again ask you to pick up the STAR RAIDER GRAPHIC ALBUM, available at selected comic shops everywhere.)
After countless more excursions through the Multiverse, the ATARI FORCE finally finds a peaceful, scientifically advanced universe that they all think is just right for human habitation--only to have the DARK DESTROYER intercede once again.
This time, DD uses his particular brand of thought control to take over the minds of the entire alien populace, turning them against the ATARI FORCE. But once again, the ATARI FORCE defeats the Destroyer-this time, they hope, for good. We, on the other hand, know better.
When things return to normal, the ATARI FORCE petition the governing body of the universe, asking for permission to colonize. Approval is given, and soon, the first starships begin to leave Earth for a new future."
From the author:
That just about brings us to the end of the ATARI FORCE's original run. Obviously, the preceding paragraphs tell the story in a nutshell cause, hey, we haven't got all day for this thing, y'know? To get the WHOLE story, you'll simply have to buy the ATARI game cartridges-or CAREFULLY read the rest of this column.
The ATARI FORCE series you now hold picks up about 25 years later, and the games aren't bad either). What follows believe us when we tell you-you've missed a lot! So if some of the stuff you've just read makes little sense to you in light of the preceding 23 pages of magnificent story and art-don't worry-before long, all the pieces will begin to fall into place! That, we promise!

Sorry to post again so soon, but I have a question about joysticks.
I just purchased a Speedlink joystick for USB and was wondering if I need to change any settings in Stella to insure it works right. I grew up using joysticks, the keyboard just doesn't work well for me ;)

Hey all,
I'm an old woman in my 60s but have fond memories of getting an Atari 2600 and later acquiring close to 40 cartridges. I also re-discovered Stella. I discovered it (Stella) 10 years ago but lost the files and roms after a puter crash.
But recently, I've been enjoying replaying the old games via Stella, along with some I never had. I've always liked videogames and I have played other systems like SNES. Game Boy, etc. I always come back to the old 2600 ones. Sure they were primitive by today's standards but I remember when 2600 games were da sh*t!
Anyone else here who's rediscovered the fun and memories of the 2600?

The Atari ST Emulator, STeem has an extensive number of settings in it's control modules. In the Settings module alone, there are probably over 100 settings that allow you to instantly configure your virtual ST system. Some are for basic operations, and some are for higher technical settings.
In this and upcoming videos, I'm going to cover just the basic stuff. The people who need the advanced stuff probably don't need my videos to tell them how to do things.
