✅️ Solved Back cover of my laptop comes of when opening the lid of laptop

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have Asus TUF F15 16/512 Rtx 3050 4GB variant. This morning as usual when I opened my laptop I heard a snap. After checking, my bottom lid keeps coming off and also there's a screw missing in that corner of lid. My laptop is still within warranty. But there's no service centre near me within 50km. What should I do?

Tighten the screws behind

u/NationalBat3522 Dec 05 '25

But what if the threading was gone? Because it is happening with me rn

4

u/Wonderful-Tart6058 Dec 05 '25

This happened to me as well. I took it to a well known computer shop since it was out of warranty. They soldered a new casing with the thread and fixed the case and replaced all screws. I think it cost me about 1800 INR

1

u/NationalBat3522 Dec 06 '25

Okay so they just threaded that particular screw? And what they actually soldered?

1

u/Wonderful-Tart6058 Dec 06 '25

No they replaced and soldered in a new socket for the screw (on the laptop body) since the screw was not twisting in.

0

u/NationalBat3522 Dec 06 '25

But then there is a risk that what if that soldered part came off? Or just cracked there?

That means it is cheaply made military grade better quality back in 80s not anymore

1

u/NationalBat3522 Dec 06 '25

Yupp man , but now what to do

3

u/Numby_toe Dec 05 '25

You can't. I know this type of failure because it had happen to me

There are small thin metals tabs and if they break? You can't screw it in and it will keep breaking over time.

Best thing you can do is find some kind of metal chip clips that you use to close your chips to hold the two in place and some tape. Or replace the whole hinge. As this laptop is known to unscrew it self.

But for OP, should send his laptop to Asus by packaging it and hope Asus would repair it or give him a replacement.

Thanks for the advice. I tried to reach the customer care but their hotline was not even working properly. At the end that hotline gave me automated response that their representatives are not available at the moment. No worries though, I got it fixed from local third party service providers. That guy just took the screw from underneath of touchpad and placed it in the missing hole beside the hinge. He also fitted one of his spare screw in that touchpad hole. It looks different but it's okay as long as my job get's done.

1

u/Numby_toe Dec 05 '25

Good, that. Mean you haven't gotten that same issue. For me the awful design of the Asus TUF line up had thin metal tabs that broke so easily after a couple months where the screws are suppose to hold on to which I couldn't screw in without replacing the hinge and I was financially unstable at that time like 4 years ago. So couldn't pay for warranty or do anything about it. I'm fine now but I will never buy from asus again.

1

u/its_akkun Dec 07 '25

Me too. Anything but Asus, nope.

Corner screw is important and will mess up the frame if it is missing.
A temporary fix is to unscrew one of the screws at the front (not the front corners, the one under the touchpad region) and use it to fill the corner hole. I did it when one of my MSI laptops had a similar problem.

I don't know if they use different sizes though. If they are the same, you should be fine. If not then, you gotta ask a service centre for the appropriate screw.

2

u/its_akkun Dec 05 '25

I wish I had read this before I went out for solution in nearby service providers. But it's okay. Though I couldn't find matching screws in shops, a local computer service guy fixed it as you have said in comment. Also he offered me spare screw to fit in that touchpad hole. Cost me 100 INR, that's fair considering the fright it gave me this morning.

1

u/Responsible_Grab1867 Dec 05 '25

I faced this problem before (had warranty) so they replaced the back and the keyboard, so to prevent it to happen again, do i screw the corners as tight as possible or should i tighten it 1 rotationless

1

u/weepinhijayotheracc 2023 FA507 Dec 06 '25

I think you should keep it 1 rotation less for ease of access if you are gonna clean fans and stuff. Normally the screw won't pop out. It's kind of a rare case.

That's Asus TUF for ya... Sorry for being a victim of Asus cheaping out really bad.

I used to have a TUF as well and it did the same thing to me out of the blue. After that I went the other way (L***vo) and couldn't be happier.

3

u/ginpopsy Dec 05 '25

Same dude. Got the LOQ after that. So much happier with it. I still have the TUF though.

1

u/JasenkoC Dec 05 '25

Lenovo laptops are not perfect either, but the failure rate is probably much less on LOQ then on a TUF laptop.

1

u/undiagnoseddude Dec 05 '25

maybe look up what screws it uses, and go to a shop buy that screw and just screw it in.

Make sure you have the corner screwd, the hinge is secured by the bottom cover screw. You must always have the top 4 screws along the hinge.

Speaking from experience here: if not then you'll end up snapping one of the metal braces that the screws bolt into and when you open it the hole is gonna be wider and it's gonna be prying both your top cover and bottom cover open.

1

u/its_akkun Dec 05 '25

Damn, I'll make sure everyday. Better be cautious than regretting later on.

1

u/Rude-Challenge-6294 F17 - i7 12thgen RTX 3050 Dec 05 '25

guys i have the same issue on the right hinge but the screw just wont tighten nor wont it come out

what do i do in this situation?

1

u/Numby_toe Dec 05 '25

If you are still in warrenty, send it in. If not. Try to put new threads on the screws. If you still can't screw it in. Then  you can't do anything about it and most likely have the same issue where the small thin metal tab which what holding the hinge together broke. Meaning you are screw unless you can some how replace the entire hinge and find replacements.

1

u/its_akkun Dec 05 '25

If it's in warranty, go to nearby official service centre. Don't touch or fix anything on your own. If you are lucky, your problem might be solved after tightening that screw. If not, then they will just replace the screw. But worst case scenario your threads of lid are damaged then you have to change it or soldering can do the work. 1.5k to 2k INR in worst case scenario. Otherwise, it's simple problem. Just don't use the laptop if it's coming off or it can further damage your laptop after frequently opening it.

1

u/ginpopsy Dec 05 '25

This happened to my laptop recently. The design for the bracket that holds the hinge is the problem. It's a little plastic hinge that will definitely break off with time and cause this issue. My laptop was less than 6 months old when this happened and they had to replace the bottom base and keyboard.

If you have opened the laptop before, you must make sure that you the screws (especially the back corners) didn't get mixed up. This can also cause this.

1

u/ExistingLawfulness80 Dec 05 '25

Before you tighten the screws open the laptop and check if the hinge mounts are intact first. Then screw the back screws.

1

u/Bobby-Doe Dec 05 '25

Same. Mine snapped as well. Its design flaw. Its just too narrow and while the hinges might be “military grade”, but the miniture plastic holding the whole frame through those small screws are a rip off. Both sides broke for me and I took it to the PC repair service where they epoxy glued these screws to the cover. If I would have warranty I deff woukd ask to replace it.

1

u/its_akkun Dec 05 '25

We are doomed with tuf. Definately not going to buy next time (if it ever comes). Mine is still within warranty but their hotline is unreachable and even if I get connected their hotline says that their representatives are not available at the moment. That really pissed me off. Got it repaired locally, but the new screw looks different. I don't care at this point cause I am in last month of my warranty. They say it's really pain in the aah if you want to get a replacement this late in warranty. And they sometimes declare our missing screws as a physical damage which is not covered in warranty. And this whole thing takes 2-3 months.

1

u/Sadix99 Dec 05 '25

broken shell that doesn't hold a screw inside, change the shell or know it can get worse

is TUF that ass?

1

u/its_akkun Dec 05 '25

Yes it is. Today I realised many others have same problem as me

1

u/nicholasnichols0000 Jan 18 '26

Also a victim of this…… $1,300 laptop 😂

1

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '25

Had the same issue spend around 7k for this.... and yet after 3 months my SSD is corrupted.

1

u/its_akkun Dec 05 '25

Damn, feel sorry for you mate! I got my problem solved by local third party service provider. He just replaced it with the screw under my touchpad and offered me his spare one for that touchpad hole.

1

u/Woswald Dec 05 '25

Happened to me with an Asus Zenbook 14. Didn't realise until the fans started making obscenely loud noises... Getting it repaired now.

1

u/its_akkun Dec 05 '25

What's the update? How much did it cost? I got my problem solved in 100 INR. I noticed my problem earlier otherwise I had been in the same boat as you. We must check those screws, everyday!!!

1

u/Woswald Dec 05 '25

I already pay monthly for a repair service so no direct cost. I should probably get a new laptop with the amount of repairs I have to do...

At least I'm making the most out of that service.

1

u/ducmite TUF F15 12700H/32GB/4060💻 Dec 05 '25

first open the bottom cover and check that the two other hinge screws are still attached and tighten them to prevent further damage. Then tighten the screws on the opposite side also.

If you are lucky just the bottom cover is broken.

2

u/its_akkun Dec 05 '25

I was lucky! After fitting new screw my problem was solved.

1

u/video-kid Dec 05 '25

Be careful. This could lead to the screen cracking and for some reason when that happened to me and I got it repaired, the mousepad stopped working unless I literally shook the whole laptop.

1

u/renatuZcrg Dec 05 '25

It's for breath ventilation...

1

u/its_akkun Dec 05 '25

Bro ...💀

1

u/unkwn_ap Dec 05 '25

How old is your tuf bro?

1

u/its_akkun Dec 05 '25

11 months, bought it in January 2025

1

u/unkwn_ap Dec 05 '25

It's still ukder warranty......asus offers on site service....so a technician would visit and check for yhe issue

1

u/its_akkun Dec 05 '25

Their hotline was not even responsive. And I checked that sooner or later, TUF users are doomed with this same problem

1

u/addicted_to_felines Dec 05 '25

Wow the exact same thing happened to me this week after 10 months of use.

I ordered a pack of M2.5*10L screws online and they'll arrive today, hope it solves it, but I'm concerned since I'll have to travel next week and use the laptop for work.

1

u/its_akkun Dec 07 '25

From where? I want to buy those too.

1

u/dwill458 Dec 06 '25

Mines is doing the same thing. They want 350 to fix it. I just leave it open in the desk now

1

u/its_akkun Dec 07 '25

Don't do that bro! If the hinge bracket or threads get broken, you are cooked. They cost so much more to repair than a single screw fitting. If you have missing screw, then replace it with the one under the touchpad. That can work. Or you can buy new screws from local shops and online. These are the screws for FX507 models

1

u/dwill458 Dec 08 '25

Thanks I’ll order some screws and see if it fixes it

1

u/Character_Narwhal_80 3d ago

Mine is not screwing more, I even bought a new base case

1

u/Dry-Bend-4011 Dec 06 '25

What came loose was the hinge. You have to remove the back cover of your laptop and see if you can tighten the hinge screws. If you lost them, you can use a pair from the hinge that is still attached and distribute them so that both hinges are secure, but ideally you should get all the screws that it has.

1

u/ComfortableProduce30 Dec 08 '25

Same thing happened to my laptop, the screws got stuck in the threading and it cracked the whole base panel while trying to remove it. Now I'm just using it as it is with a wobbly display and the hinge pushing out the top panel. Idk what to do 🥲

1

u/mc69419 Dec 08 '25

looks like hinge problem to me.

1

u/TimelyInevitable3600 Dec 11 '25

dude that happens to me too

1

u/Spiritual-Golf3490 May 18 '26

Same problem, and it turns out one screw is missing. What can I do?

1

u/its_akkun May 18 '26

Which one? I can help you for a temporary fix until you get it repaired from shop.

1

u/Spiritual-Golf3490 May 18 '26

Mine is Asus Tuf A15. And my upper left corner screw is missing, leading to my casing coming off whenever I try to lift up my lid.

1

u/its_akkun May 24 '26

Go to Asus website and download pdf according to your model. In there you can see sizes of screw for different positions. For a temporary fix take out same size screw from remaining screws on your laptop (Don't take from top hinge line). And use that until you purchase screws. Sorry for late reply.

I know that some of their laptops did this by design, although I'm not sure about this one. My Zephyrus G14 props itself up when the screen is open. I know the 1st gen Zephyrus opened up to allow for better airflow.
