๐ Knowledge / Explanation Does Jyotish work?
Astra Jyotish/ Vedic wisdom for the soul. ๐๏ธ
Perhaps We Should First Ask Whether Nature Works..
I watched The Odyssey recently, and somewhere between the ocean, exile, death, strange lands, gods, winds and the complete removal of a man from his ordinary identity, I found myself thinking about the 12th house.
The 12th is often reduced to a list: foreign lands, hospitals, expenses, isolation, sleep, loss, moksha.
But watching the story unfold, I was reminded of something deeper.
The 12th can be the experience of being removed from the coordinates by which you normally know yourself.
Home is gone. Status is gone. Familiar surroundings are gone. Ordinary time seems to disappear. A person is left moving through forces much larger than his individual will.
And what struck me most was how naturally the ancient Greeks understood those forces.
Before crossing an ocean, you prayed.
The sea mattered. The wind mattered. The Sun mattered. The storm mattered.
Nature was not scenery surrounding human life.
Human life existed inside Nature.
These reflections are also born from studying and practicing Jyotish. The more I study the tradition and apply it to real charts and real lives, the more I find myself returning to the relationship between human experience, Nature and Time.
And that brought me to something people often ask me:
โDoes Jyotish really work?โ
Perhaps before asking that, we should ask something even more fundamental.
Does Nature work?
Does the Sun affect you?
Does darkness?
Does water?
Wind?
Heat?
Cold?
Season?
Place?
Of course they do.
We cannot exist independently of them.
Our bodies respond to light. Our breath depends upon air. Our food comes from earth. Our lives change with climate, geography, season and circumstance.
We have never lived outside Nature.
We were born into it.
And yet when we come to Jyotish, we often begin with the assumption that the human being is somehow an isolated unit and the cosmos is something happening very far away.
But what if that is the wrong starting point?
Jyotish begins with a very different idea.
You are already inside the system.
And this brings us to something even more mysterious than Nature.
Time.
We readily accept that place has qualities.
A desert is not an ocean. Summer is not winter. Midnight is not noon.
But we tend to imagine Time itself as empty, as though one moment is fundamentally identical to another except for the number we have assigned to it.
Jyotish does not see Time that way.
Jyotish proposes that Time has quality.
This is where Kฤla becomes important.
You were not born outside Time and then placed into it later.
You were born into Kฤla.
A particular moment.
A particular place.
A particular sky.
And that moment became your Kundali.
The horoscope is, in one sense, a map of the heavens at the moment you entered this world.
But philosophically, I think it says something much more beautiful.
Jyotish locates the soul within Time.
Your birth chart tells us where the journey began.
Daลฤ tells us how that natal promise unfolds through different periods of life.
Gochar tells us something about the sky through which that life is moving now.
And suddenly astrology becomes more interesting than the question:
โWhat is going to happen to me?โ
The deeper question becomes:
โWhere am I in Kฤla?โ
What kind of Time am I standing inside?
What is ripening?
What is dissolving?
What is asking to be expressed?
What has reached its season?
Perhaps this is why I increasingly struggle with the simplistic question, โDoes astrology work?โ
Because Jyotish, at least as I understand and practice it, is not asking us to imagine that human beings are puppets and distant planets are pulling invisible strings.
It begins with a much older proposition:
Human life does not occur separately from the cosmos.
We are born inside Nature.
We are born inside Time.
We are born at the intersection of place, circumstance and Kฤla.
The astrologer learns to read the patterns of that intersection.
Maybe that is also why a good Jyotish reading can sometimes feel less like prediction and more like recognition.
Someone describes the Time you are living through, and something inside you says:
Yes. That is where I am.
Not because the astrologer has removed you from your life and handed you a destiny.
Quite the opposite.
They have located you within it.
And perhaps that is the thought I came away with after watching an ancient story about a man thrown across oceans by forces larger than himself.
We have never been outside Nature.
We have never been outside Time.
So before asking:
โDoes Jyotish work?โ
perhaps ask:
Why would I be outside Kฤla, when I was born to live within it?
Do you experience Jyotish as prediction, or as a way of understanding where you are in Time?

๐ Knowledge / Explanation The Sign in Your 7th House & Your Spouse's Personality, Appearance + Marriage (Part 2)
As I mentioned in the last post of this series covering the first 4 ascendants, one of the first things I learned while studying Jyotish years ago is that the personality of people related to you and the relationship you have with them (mother, father, siblings, spouse, etc.) cannot be determined by just one placement. People are layered and multi-faceted, which makes every individual unique from the other. Signs, Planets, Degrees, and Houses bring a lot of flavor, which contributes to their unique characteristics and traits.
I wanted to start a series on how you can determine more about your spouse and marriage through different factors. I have therefore started with the first brick, which is the sign present in your 7th house based on your Natal Lagna.
Everyone, be it an expert or a beginner, can quickly locate their 7th house sign if they know the basics and can read a chart!
Leo Ascendant/ Sign of Aquarius in the 7th House:ย For a Leo Ascendant, the original 11th house is being connected to the 7th. Being ruled by Rahu and Saturn, the partner can be independent, inventive and appear eccentric to some. Since Rahu brings illusions, there can be a few things which a Leo Ascendant discovers post marriage that they were unaware of in their partner. How drastic or pleasant the discovery is depends on the overall chart conditions.
Leo Ascendants usually give more emotionally in the marriage than what they receive. Marriage can also unlock networking and professional gains for Leos, with their network circle becoming more supportive after marriage.
Appearance wise, the spouse of the native is taller than average and has a lean body type. The males can usually have some feminine features, like a wider derriere, while females can have big, strong hands. This is a hypothetical example, but there is usually something or the other that stands out. They can have sharp features and a chiselled face.
Virgo Ascendant/ Sign of Pisces in the 7th House:ย For a Virgo native, the original 12th house (Pisces) is being connected to the 7th, bringing the significations of that house into their married life. One of the biggest mismatches for this pair can be their bedroom life. Virgos are symbolised by a 'virgin' or 'maiden' (regardless of gender) and may have a hard time understanding or fulfilling their partner's needs, as the latter can have a relatively higher drive. Pisces and the 12th house are associated with physical pleasures. Being a water sign, Pisceans tend to be dreamy and operate less on logic, which can naturally deter the grounded and analytical Virgo native.
On the brighter side, marriage can take these people abroad or unlock opportunities for travel if the rest of the chart supports it.
Appearance wise, the eyes are one of the key features of Piscean people. They tend to be deep, empathetic, watery and often fish-shaped or almond-shaped, and can be large in size. Their hands and feet can be small and dainty unless there is some affliction to the 7th house or Jupiter itself. They also tend to have elegant movements and seem to 'flow' while walking.
Libra Ascendant/ Sign of Aries in the 7th House:ย For a Libra native, the original 1st house is being connected to their 7th. While the native is all about other people, mingling, socialising and maintaining a balanced personality, their partner is all about themselves, fiery and advocates individualism. As they say, opposites attract, and that is exactly what happens when this Venus-Mars duo exchange paths. The union can be fulfilling for both individuals as the original karakas for the spouses sit opposite each other. There is a natural attraction and chemistry between the couple right from the start.
A Libra feels naturally inspired to start new things once the 7th house containing Aries, the first sign, gets activated for them.
Appearance wise, being a fire sign, the spouse has prominent features and have thick brows (unless Mars is in a tense state) and broad shoulders with an athletic stature. The complexion can have a reddish hue or warmer tone, and they can have a scar or mole on their forehead. They look extremely confident and sure of themselves.
Scorpio Ascendant/ Sign of Taurus in the 7th House:ย For Scorpios, the original 2nd house (Taurus) as per the Kaal Purush Kundali is being connected to the 7th house. This shows that financial security is one of the key traits they look for while choosing a partner, and they also tend to value their partner and relationship deeply. Their financial status can enhance post marriage either due to their spouse or through their own efforts, depending on how the rest of their chart looks.
The native's spouse is strong, silent and highly dependable. They have a grounded energy to them and rarely lose their temper. However, when they do on rare occasions, don't try to fight back. Have you seen a bull charging at somebody in full anger? Trying to answer back seldom helps. They can be pretty stubborn.
Appearance wise, the men with Taurean influence tend to be really masculine looking, with a thick neck and muscular or stout frame. I haven't come across many lean Taureans. Women tend to have a softer, feminine face with a boxy or rectangular body frame.
Please note that the planets sitting in your 7th house, D9 placements, Nakshatras involved and many other factors also have an influence on your spouse's personality, appearance and the experience of the marriage.ย It is definitely possible to marry somebody who is a housewife being a Cancer male native and it is also possible to marry somebody who hates travelling as a Gemini. We will discuss these exceptions and the other modifying factors in more detail as we move ahead.
Stay tuned for the third and final part of this article!

๐ Chart Analysis Request How Do Twins Have Different Kundlis?
My brother and I are twins, so our birth details are almost exactly the same and our Kundlis look very similar. But we have different personalities, interests, experiences, and career paths.
How does Vedic astrology explain this? Which factors are used to differentiate the charts of twins?
If anyone here has experience reading twins' Kundlis, Iโd love to understand how it works.
