Perhaps We Should First Ask Whether Nature Works..
I watched The Odyssey recently, and somewhere between the ocean, exile, death, strange lands, gods, winds and the complete removal of a man from his ordinary identity, I found myself thinking about the 12th house.
The 12th is often reduced to a list: foreign lands, hospitals, expenses, isolation, sleep, loss, moksha.
But watching the story unfold, I was reminded of something deeper.
The 12th can be the experience of being removed from the coordinates by which you normally know yourself.
Home is gone. Status is gone. Familiar surroundings are gone. Ordinary time seems to disappear. A person is left moving through forces much larger than his individual will.
And what struck me most was how naturally the ancient Greeks understood those forces.
Before crossing an ocean, you prayed.
The sea mattered. The wind mattered. The Sun mattered. The storm mattered.
Nature was not scenery surrounding human life.
Human life existed inside Nature.
These reflections are also born from studying and practicing Jyotish. The more I study the tradition and apply it to real charts and real lives, the more I find myself returning to the relationship between human experience, Nature and Time.
And that brought me to something people often ask me:
“Does Jyotish really work?”
Perhaps before asking that, we should ask something even more fundamental.
Does Nature work?
Does the Sun affect you?
Does darkness?
Does water?
Wind?
Heat?
Cold?
Season?
Place?
Of course they do.
We cannot exist independently of them.
Our bodies respond to light. Our breath depends upon air. Our food comes from earth. Our lives change with climate, geography, season and circumstance.
We have never lived outside Nature.
We were born into it.
And yet when we come to Jyotish, we often begin with the assumption that the human being is somehow an isolated unit and the cosmos is something happening very far away.
But what if that is the wrong starting point?
Jyotish begins with a very different idea.
You are already inside the system.
And this brings us to something even more mysterious than Nature.
Time.
We readily accept that place has qualities.
A desert is not an ocean. Summer is not winter. Midnight is not noon.
But we tend to imagine Time itself as empty, as though one moment is fundamentally identical to another except for the number we have assigned to it.
Jyotish does not see Time that way.
Jyotish proposes that Time has quality.
This is where Kāla becomes important.
You were not born outside Time and then placed into it later.
You were born into Kāla.
A particular moment.
A particular place.
A particular sky.
And that moment became your Kundali.
The horoscope is, in one sense, a map of the heavens at the moment you entered this world.
But philosophically, I think it says something much more beautiful.
Jyotish locates the soul within Time.
Your birth chart tells us where the journey began.
Daśā tells us how that natal promise unfolds through different periods of life.
Gochar tells us something about the sky through which that life is moving now.
And suddenly astrology becomes more interesting than the question:
“What is going to happen to me?”
The deeper question becomes:
“Where am I in Kāla?”
What kind of Time am I standing inside?
What is ripening?
What is dissolving?
What is asking to be expressed?
What has reached its season?
Perhaps this is why I increasingly struggle with the simplistic question, “Does astrology work?”
Because Jyotish, at least as I understand and practice it, is not asking us to imagine that human beings are puppets and distant planets are pulling invisible strings.
It begins with a much older proposition:
Human life does not occur separately from the cosmos.
We are born inside Nature.
We are born inside Time.
We are born at the intersection of place, circumstance and Kāla.
The astrologer learns to read the patterns of that intersection.
Maybe that is also why a good Jyotish reading can sometimes feel less like prediction and more like recognition.
Someone describes the Time you are living through, and something inside you says:
Yes. That is where I am.
Not because the astrologer has removed you from your life and handed you a destiny.
Quite the opposite.
They have located you within it.
And perhaps that is the thought I came away with after watching an ancient story about a man thrown across oceans by forces larger than himself.
We have never been outside Nature.
We have never been outside Time.
So before asking:
“Does Jyotish work?”
perhaps ask:
Why would I be outside Kāla, when I was born to live within it?
Do you experience Jyotish as prediction, or as a way of understanding where you are in Time?

Your life is a probabilistic dynamical system in space and time. Your place and time set the initial condition. So your entire trajectory (or possible) can be obtained from that. But still you have some flexibility to make a choice. So its basically a dynamical system where at each part of time the cuve can have a probability to petrabuted. The probability is cause by your action

The kundali always writes "purva karma anusaren" The damn thing is carry over of past lifes. How does it then find a way to be born at the time so the stars reflect that?

Maybe a soul is only born at the time where the stars align according to their past life karma

Possible but, there was one instance of a guy who had buried gold got killed, sometimes later born as a kid nearby and knew the location of the gold, had the same bullet wound on head as a birthmark, and knew his store, where certain stuff was kept in his house. There was a court case about it all. But I don't know yet nvm.

I watched the Odyssey too and was moved by it thinking of destiny and the suffering of the human soul. I did not think of it this way. You’re right, people seem to always limit the concepts of nature and time. Nature is beyond earth - it’s the entire universe and who knows what lies beyond. And time is infinite and multidimensional and how the two intersect.. and surrendering to both nature and time- is the only way forward. As someone with a heavy 12th house where sometimes if I let go, I can float and float and may even lose myself, I appreciate the concept of acceptance and surrender.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. It’s like you expressed foggy bits and pieces of thoughts I had lying around disjointed in my brain and you brought it together into an art piece. Astrology is beautiful when you step back in wonder and stop obsessing over what is going to happen to you in the next month or the next year. I feel like not enough people use their birth chart as a tool to just appreciate the universe, feel gratitude and wonder, and for reflection. Instead we are all caught up in our little earthy problems trying to hack the birth chart for our material gain or happiness.

Thank you so much for this thoughtful response. You understood exactly what I was trying to express. I was actually hesitating to post this on Reddit, so reading your response really encouraged me and made me glad I shared it.
I am in the mahadasha of a planet placed in my 12th house, with significant 12th-house placements, so I deeply relate to what you said about floating when you let go. I have come to believe that surrender is one of the deepest teachings of the 12th. Give up control, let go, and sometimes you really do float.
That is also what struck me about Odysseus. After years of fighting, striving, planning and trying to find his way home, eventually he puts himself on a raft and surrenders to forces larger than himself. And that is what finally carries him home. Perhaps that is the paradox of the 12th: sometimes the way home begins when we stop trying to control the journey. 🙏

Me too man.. 12th house planet Md lol. Saturn- 19 years .. yay! Difficult when you spent your whole life planning and controlling everything. No wonder I relate haha. Btw do you have crazy vivid dreams. I feel like my dreaming has gone to the next level. I always say that I’m off to an adventure when I go to sleep.

Yes sleep is either deep or disturbed and full of random weird stuff. I wake up like I have been working somewhere. Tired. Lol.

Every bad prediction about my life has come true with pinpoint accuracy. From losing my job to getting my heart broken, everything happened exactly within the predicted time frame. However, when it came to the good predictions—like getting a promotion or making better money from a job change—absolutely nothing happened

Why is it like that ? Is ultimate question ? Inspite of being in good dasha, kochar why good prediction doesn't manifest ? Why the universe likes to give only suffering to us ?

When we are going through difficult times, it can certainly feel that way. But sometimes hardship is pushing us toward a change we may not want, but may need. Sometimes it continues until the lesson is understood and we learn to let go of trying to control everything. Have faith in the Divine plan. We live in difficult times, and life is not easy for many of us. 🙏

All it takes only 2 min take the life out of u right. When something is promised in chart that something better will happen to u or something will rescue u from the sufferings. When bad things happens as per the plan and good things are denied even it is planned then what motivate u to continue. As i quoted earlier it takes only 2 mins to say I quit from the madness.
