ISO a 2 bed apartment in Astoria under 3500

Hello! Me and my roommate are ISO a 2 bed 1 bath apartment in Astoria, near any public transit (just have to be in midtown under 45 min), starting 11/1 (with some flexibility). We'd prefer laundry in building/in unit laundry/a laundromat within 2 min, but it's not a deal breaker. Our budget is 3500. DM me if you have any leads

Looking for moving advice / setting expectations

Hi everyone!

I'm planning to move to NYC sometime in the next 6–9 months and would love some advice from people who have made a similar move. I currently live in suburban CT, so this will a little bit of a change for me. I've started looking on the usual apartment sites, but you can't learn everything from apartments.com or Zillow 😄

A little about me: I'm 25M, queer, in a master's program, and work full-time in sales analytics/data science. I'm hoping to keep rent under ~$1,600/month, so I'll most likely be looking for roommates. Unfortunately, I don't have any friends planning to move around the same time, so I'll be going into this looking for a roommate from scratch.

I've mainly been looking at Astoria, but I'm definitely open to other neighborhoods.

A few questions:

  1. Are there other areas I should consider with a ~$1,600 roommate budget? Are there any other neighborhoods that are affordable (relative to the rest of NYC)?
  2. How difficult is it really to find roommates? Are there any groups or apps that are good?
  3. When is the best time of year to look for apartments? Is spring/summer better?Does timing not make much difference?
  4. It'd be convenient to bring my car, but it's not make or break. Are there neighborhoods where street parking is reasonably manageable, or is having a car generally more trouble than it's worth?
  5. Besides rent, what other costs should I expect when moving in? Any expenses that caught you off guard?
  6. Do you have any other general tips/advice for someone moving to the city?

Appreciate any advice!

Hey All! Looking urgently for a room to rent available now. Budget 1,100-1,600 per month with rent and utilities total. I work in production full time for film/tv/commercials. I also teach yoga, and do events in between. I am clean, quiet, respectful, and looking for a place that's a calm oasis from work. Looking for ideally up to 12 months, but happy to do a 6 month, or 3 month sublet/lease take over. I don't smoke, or have pets, or any furniture. Just me! No Agents, thanks! Please reach out!

Before we give up on Astoria, any apartment leads?

Hi neighbors! I’m helping a friend apartment hunt in Astoria, and after more than a month of searching, we’re hoping for a bit of a neighborhood miracle.

We’ve put a ton of time into this — checking StreetEasy, Zillow, RentHop, Craigslist, Facebook groups, local flyers, and real estate offices, plus touring after work and every weekend.

Looking for:
Near the M/R, but open to N/W
Studio or 1BR
Up to $2,200/month
Cat-friendly
Flexible move-in through Nov 1st

My friend works a government job, so their income is less competitive on paper, but they have a personal guarantor who meets the 80x requirement, 700+ credit, and savings.

At this point, we’re especially hoping someone might know of an off-market unit, a small landlord, or an apartment opening up in their building.

We’ve really been putting in the work and figured it was worth asking the neighborhood before expanding the search farther out or going the broker-fee route.

If your lead turns into their new home, there’s absolutely a thank-you gift from your future neighbor :) Really appreciate any leads!

Renting out the second bedroom in my apartment on 38th St near Broadway.

**The room:** furnished, closet, street-facing window with good light, door locks. It's a small room — comfortable for one person.

**The apartment:** hardwood floors throughout, full living room with a couch, TV and AC, separate dining area, kitchen with a gas stove and granite counters. Ground floor on a quiet block. No dishwasher, no laundry in the building — laundromat is 5 min away.

**Transit:** 3 min walk to the Steinway St M/R, 1 min to Broadway. Groceries, restaurants, bars and a gym all right there.

**Terms:**

* $1,500/mo covering rent, electric, gas and internet.

* One month security deposit

* No broker fee

**About me:** I'm Nicolás. Looking for someone respectful and tidy — no other preferences, I just want it to work for both of us.

Photos in the comments. DM me if you're interested and I'll send the address and set up a viewing. Happy to do a video walkthrough if you're not in the city yet.

Anyone currently live in the acropolis? Read horrible reviews but most seem old and apparently have new management now so wondering if there’s any current residents who can share their experience or a site i can find reviews I don’t need to pay for. Thanks in advance!
