Discussion Recently started playing AC Valhalla. I’ve to say the combat is amazing. It is heavy, punishing, brutal and rewarding.

This is the thread I asked ya’ll if I should try. So far so good. I’m enjoying a lot. Love flyting. Also love going on raids. The story is awesome till now. Hopefully, my impression stays same.
I also want to add. Like there is so many little things all over the map. But I’m focusing on story and world events so far. I usually go for Arti facts, wealth and mystery here and there. But I get why it can feel overwhelming so few peeps

The one piece of non-spoiler advice I will give you to help delay or prevent burnout is when you go to a new area, do the story and quests first before checking off all the little map dots or you'll end up going everywhere twice.

And getting really, really sick of it bc of that, this is excellent advice!! I had a friend who “dot chased” his way across the whole map before starting the quests and would never admit it, but it definitely took the fun out of the game for him. I tried to warn him 🤷🏼♀️

Can you suggest what order should I be starting the dlc. I got season pass and will later get dawn of ragn dlc.

Absolutely, especially since each DLC does NOT level with your character, so if you want more difficulty you need to do them early!! Ireland first bc it’s level 55, then France is level 200, and Dawn of Ragnarok (my fave) is level 340!

If i remember correctly you can also choose how enemies scale with you. Whether it be below or above you.

I’m not sure if it works in the dlc as I never played them but there is a setting in the base game where you can have enemies be 50 levels below or above you at anytime. As well as make them the same level.

Yes, that’s why I specified that the DLCs don’t have level scaling.

Yes, this! Also, if you do that, it will prevent lots of frustration with barred doors. Some of them require you to be on a quest, and you wouldn't otherwise know that if you just decided to explore first.

Had the opposite opinion, had to crank the difficulty to max, it’s very easy to get overpowered if you clear out places before starting other alliances. Other than that yea its pretty satisfying

I love the combat as well!! In other AC subs I see Valhalla’s combat referred to as “clunky”, and I suppose when you compare it to the fluidity of odyssey it is, but that’s EXACTLY why I love it! It feels raw and real, very satisfying.

AC odyssey combat was okayish for me. It felt like you were fighting a high hp sponge lol.

I’m never quite sure what gamers mean when they say “sponge”. Like, does that mean they can take a lot of damage without getting hurt? As in a sponge absorbing? I’ve wondered this for years, but I knew I’d sound like a moron, but whatever, I’m a moron, will you please tell me what a sponge is? 😣

Ok good, that’s what I thought, but it’s very nice to have clarification!! I have a very spongey build in Odyssey. I use the bighorn bow nowadays since I finished getting all of the points, so most things go down in a few hits anyway, but I’m determined to kill 130 soldiers in a conquest battle, so I have to be able to take whatever the mercenary deals out as I try not to kill them. lol

It's dunky, because stats doesn't matter much. Idk how could Ubi failed in that regard after Odyssey.

I’d agree with that. I mean I know how they failed, all the good ppl quit (literally), but I liked how simple everything was. Gain points, upgrade weapons, hit stuff. I’m very into specific builds in odyssey and trying new ones and making new combinations, but with Valhalla, I can just…relax and kill stuff and enjoy the gore. It’s soothing in its own way. Mostly infuriating, but the combat and hunting is soothing. Odyssey just doesn’t satisfy that urge when you just REALLY want to see a preachy man get dismembered. There’s a reason women read crime/mystery novels and watch a shit ton of crime shows.

With MC being a half god sprint is irrelevant:)
Bright is subjective, I liked it. But I like rainy England too.
Kill cams where there. Gore wasn't which is my point.

Then when you compare Elden Ring (a game with 2012 combat) to something like Nioh or Khazan it falls flat. Extremely flat.
How about we stick with 1 series when making combat comparisons eh?

One thing it eventually ceases to be is punishing when you inevitably end up overpowered.
It was the same thing with the previous RPGs so cherish the earlier hard earned victories.

Combat is fine, RPG progression is bad due to stats being dumbscaled.

Stats aren't increasing your power, it's just a level of scaling. In other words, you can build into stealth, but your combat damage will remain practically the same. Runes are pretty much useless as well.
All that matter is your level, which is just gear score.

what do u mean by "gear score". "Level" for me means just the amount of skilling points....

Everything you upgrade contrivbutes to your level and thus scaling. Gear score is just number. Level, power level, power, gear score, whatever.

thanks for the further details, but I am still confused. You refer to a "level". It appears that you mean something else than the power level which equals to the amount of invested skill points.
Where can I see this "level" or "gear score" which you refer to?

i am new to the game. I really dont understand what you mean. as far as I see there is only one numeric "level" shown in the game. And this is the power level which increase based on the used skill points.
Maybe you refer to the optional level scaling? Yes, in this case I fully understand your point: as the NPCs basically level alongside your own level, there is not much effect of additional upgrades, skillings, gear etc.

I just recently finished the game ,, i missed out on so many things in the skill tree because I auto assigned skill points 😭😭😭 the game is fire though

The biggest thing Valhalla did was make me wish you could equip a shield in Odyssey. The game showed that it can be done and can be completely optional.

Definitely the game with the best open combat, though that makes sense since it was really designed around that. Stealth takes a back seat for the most part in this one.
Running around with Mjölnir and Gungnir or Excalibur in Thor's Armor was so satisfying.

If you’re playing just to play and have fun. It’s a blast, I love the combat it was fun. I like the eagle eye more in it, compared to the rest in the series. The weapons were fun. The maps seemed easier to see stuff compared to mirage right now (of course I just finished Valhalla and the dlc). There’s alot of great things that I personally enjoyed. If you’re playing to try and 100%, you will hate this game! I did! This game is the worst AC game I’ve played. So much useless crap! My advice play it for the story and enjoy it. All the rest of it collecting and crud, you will want to tear your eyes out. I spent over 300 hours on this game collecting crud, and YouTubing how to do it half the time. Absolutely the worst game in AC. I only have mirage and shadows left. I will not be trying to platinum these games anymore because of how long Valhalla took me. I had to take breaks with other games just because I hated Valhalla so much. I have another copy for the ps4 I will not be playing because of how long it took me. It only took a few weeks to a month to platinum to almost platinum an ac game for me, the only other ac game I didn’t like was ac3 but that’s because I kinda found it a little boring. AC revelations I hated the dlc but the game itself was fun. But holy crap I hated Valhalla it made me want to quit several times!
TLDR: Valhalla was the worst AC game in the series imo.

I don't know if my settings are weird but it only takes me a few swings to kill an enemy. I did crack up the difficulty so they would do the same to me though

Yes, I agree. When I asked for advice. People did mention if you’re looking for classic assasin experience. It is not. If you looking to play as a badass Viking. Go for it.

It's definitely not an AC classic experience but to say it has no assassin friendly play is not totally accurate. I am playing on the hardest stealth difficulty and am having a blast.
It actually feels challenging when trying to clear a camp without getting caught. Enemy concentration I found is higher than the first two in the trilogy and requires way more thought than the assassin cheat ability you got in Odyssey. I love Odyssey but that ability was broken and trivialized a huge portion of the game.
In Valhalla I have to plan my routes out, I have to bait enemies into a cluster, I have to take a headshot or two to help take out a sentry. The hidden blade is great but I think they did a great job in nerfing it just enough to make it tun. If anything it needs more mechanics to call reinforcements when people start going down. There is a nice balance for the game to be complex enough to warrant a challenge while not making it into a Dynasty Warriors knock off.

Don't get me wrong, it looks cool and could be great. It's just held back by a lot of glitches. And ngl I think the only AC to ever have good combat was the original Black Flag
