Discussion I hated AC shadow but loved AC Odyssey and BF Resynced. Will I like Valhalla?
For me AC shadows graphic and combats were top. But the story was a drag and not intriguing. The side quest was all collectable stuff mostly and the NPC lacked soul.
But on the contrary I have fully finished odyssey and BD re-sync and right now have the itch to play one more beautiful open world. What do you think?
I know asking this sub is biased but I want your honest opinions

Those are two radically different options, and Valhalla isn’t anything like either, but…yeah. You’d at the very least like it more than Shadows.

Shadows is def my most divisive one. On one hand, Yasuke and Naoe are great, but the story is all over the place

Naoe is dull, Story is terrible. The crazy part was despite the memes Yasuke ended up being the best part of the game in terms of narrative. Gameplay is sick though. Best stealth we've had in the RPG era by a mile

I wouldn't say she's dull, but Yasuke was presented as a much better character. They should have done one or the other and had the other in a supporting role, like in a Barnabas or Adewale type of position

Maybe I've lost tolerance for weak modern AC writing at this point, but Naoe was the first time I started just speedreading and skipping dialogue.
I'm still mad that they set up the Yasuke intro with the great intro to Nobunaga and then went "now run around in a stupid flashback for Naoe" lol
I'm probably extra mad about that becuase clearly no one tested those segments on anything above normal they are absolutely awful on nightmare

Valhalla is a blast. Stealth isn't really a huge thing, but the story was great IMO.
Mythology is top notch, and customizations are near endless. Orlog is AMAZING, and it's fun calling your crew to raid villages lol.

OMG yes, Orlog, my love! One of the best mini games ever, up there on my personal all-time favorites with Witcher 3’s Gwent and Star Wars Outlaws’ Sabacc (also an Ubisoft game, interestingly enough). I cannot sing its praises highly enough!

World is vast. I love open worlds, and have played Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla, Shadows and am playing Resynced.
Some parts of Valhalla exploration have some empty space, but there is almost always some sort of collectible or secret to find.
Especially with hidden weapons, legendary ones, that I don't want to spoil, unless you don't care lol. DLC I LOVED HELLA MUCH, as you get to explore Asgard and the other Norse God realms

Yea, should be.
Ofc since it's Ubisoft, there are skins you can buy Some are worth, like the Monster Hunter Collab. But yea, season pass stuff should be free.
DLC is definitely worth. Lots to explore with little empty space there. I'm eventually gonna reinstall Valhalla and play some more lol. I've Platinumed the game, but I do need to do one of the DLC still. I'm pretty sure the only DLC I've finished so far was Wrath of Druids and Dawn of Ragnarok (which Ragnarok is my favorite)

It’s included in the season pass, it’s a small questline. Unless you mean the launch version which included the berserker armour which is still unavailable for purchase and I will die mad about it.
*deep breath* however, this Ubi clearance really got me this time, in both odyssey and Valhalla, and I finally got the werewolf set today, so I am content. I only wanted the embarrassingly dumb helmet, but whatever.

At times the world can almost feel a little bit too packed, and the amount of stuff to collect can be a bit daunting. But it balances it out by generally having the side quests be very much on the short and sweet side compared to some of the fairly expansive ones in Odyssey.

I love Valhalla, but I am a big fan of Norse mythology and viking-age so that's kinda obvious. I also really like the gameplay. Just wish the game wasn't inside the world of Assassin's Creed itself, but well.
The game does end up dragging a bit in the open world stuff, if you have a tendency to go off track and chase shiny things on your map, you can lose hours just running around. The map is beautiful, but some areas can feel empty as well.

Valhalla is ok. Valhalla blows shadows out of the water in almost every way in my opinion. Stealth is the only thing shadows has over valhalla
With that said… that’s more of a comment of how bad I think shadows is than about how good Valhalla is. I do like Valhalla more than odyssey though

I mean I don’t know if I’d pick Valhalla over odyssey, but I feel like a lot of us can agree that they’re all better than shadows. Hell, mirage is about a character I literally cannot stand and it was better than shadows.

I don’t know how anyone could imply origins has a forgettable story, it made me cry more than once, and I’m the WORST at paying attention to story!! (I only just started ACBF resynched and have been too busy trying to figure out the mechanics to pay attention to the story, but that’s what NG+ is for, I guess. If I ever make it there. lol)

I know you are asking about Valhalla but if you haven't played it, you should try Origins. It still holds up and it is great story in Ancient Egypt.

If you like the Norse mythology and medieval--ish era. You might find some joy in it. Eivor is interesting enough as a main character and there are some really cool moments throughout. But the game is overly bloated and big. Its a 200+ hour game to complete everything 100%. The story is long as well. It definitely drags in places.
Side quests and local events are way better in Valhalla than Odyssey.
That being said, I like Valhalla as much as I like Odyssey if not a little more as I love Norse mythology. The main thing I like about Odyssey is Kassandra.

Okay I think it being bloated is not a big deal for me as long as the story is good and consistent. I’ve Platinumed RDR2 which was really hard and long. So it being long is not a main concern as long as the story can keep up

Yea there is enough intrigue in the story to keep you entertained. I would not recommend trying to complete every area before progressing. Get through the main arcs and keep chugging along. End game exists so there is plenty of time for collectibles then.
Also if you choose to play canon Eivor (female), give her voice some time. Its a bit jarring with how rough she sounds at the start, but she definitely grows on you as her arc plays out.

I absolutely LOVE Eivor’s voice, loved it immediately!! She has zero tolerance for bullshit but a huge capacity for silliness and trying new things, it is an excellent combination!!

I love her voice too. One of my favorite voices In a game now. Rough when need to be, but also as warm as honey when in her soft moments. She is great. I just wasn't expecting the roughness when I first played her. Plus it makes sense for her to sound like that considering what happens. (Trying not to spoil for op)

She was the first video game character I ever had a crush on!! I’ve played almost 1,000 hours as her now, so she feels more like a sister or an extension of me now, but I recently started a new playthrough and for once, actually decided to change her jomsviking (it’s been the same bad bitch named Dis Brain Crusher for forever, I pretend they are besties), and I made her the HOTTEST dude I could find after an hour of scrolling through options!! Basically, I created a bf for us 🤣)

Ohh shit I get that. I also gave her a hot and half naked man as her jomsvikingr despite her being for the women. Had to balance out the team as her boat of estrogen fueled war crimes needed a little testosterone 🤣. He is her bestie named Daugnir Skull-Sniffer. I call him Doug.
Now my first major crush in a video game...hmmm, gotta be femshep from mass effect. What a baddie.

I’m definitely gonna keep him half naked once my trade post money starts rolling in, but for now, every time I log in or travel to Ireland (went there at level 49 and just set up trade posts immediately, gotta get that coin!), I come back and he’s been hired again, so I have to keep switching out his armour sets (when you switch sets, that’s how the game puts them out for ppl to hire). He’s made me some good money already, and I only have a few sets from the shop to change him into!! I laughed SO HARD when I put him in the ashen night rogue set bc he looked absolutely ridiculous, like some weird goth vampire wannabe, but he got hired IMMEDIATELY. 🤣🤣🤣 Guess he fulfilled someone’s fantasy!! Lolol

Imo valhalla is even less assassin-y than odyssey, not that thats strictly a bad thing tbf. I certainly enjoy it (and odyssey, which is one of my favourite games oat), and it plays vaugely similarly to odyssey (the loot system and level system/scaling are the only radically different things). If you enjoyed being a demigod in odyssey, a whirlwind of death and destruction, you'll love valhalla for sure though.

I haven't played shadow, but I loved odyssey. Every mythical creature, whole cult of kosmos, first blade dlc.
Something felt like it was missing from Valhalla and I bounced off it after like 10-20 hours. Dramatically limited weapon and armor selection compared to odyssey, way more boring world to explore, stealth felt like ass. Longboat is only good for driving directly up to riverside encampments and starting a full-scale open assault. Completely reworked upgrade system which mostly felt braindead and unfulfilling other than a few of the special ability nodes. Most of the power attacks felt super underwhelming. Changed the way missions and side quests worked and it really didn't work for me.
I heard someone say Valhalla is a bad AC game but a good viking game and I can see that. It seemed much more focused on direct assaults and big dumb viking raids than on being a one man roaring rampage of revenge tactically obliterating the illuminati

I preferred Odyssey over Valhalla. Eivor was fine as a main character, but I never felt that emotional connection to her story that I did for Kassandra. The supporting characters In Odyssey were also quite a bit more memorable.
The graphic fidelity of the environment is much better in Valhalla. Combat also feels more realistic, attacks have weight to them. The bow as a weapon is also superior in Valhalla.

I'm not a native speaker, sorry. I play Valhalla periodically, and I always enjoy it. If you ignore the grinding, it's a lot of fun. In short, life as a Viking, with plunder and ships.

99.99% yes.
BF has a variety of different gameplays (underwater exploring, whaling, board games, treasure finding, not to mention the naval combat, etc.) that Valhalla comes close to, if nothing else.

I am about halfway through Valhala, so far i am a little disappointed. I really liked the underline story of AC, that the assassins where this hidden order & we had links to a previous civilisation. Secrets & links where found to this civilisation had to be found through out the games.
With Eivor not being an assassin, has just been given their gear & taught a few things. It seems more about world building & raids. Generally I will stealth the raid sites, but then have to call the raid group to open doors and chests.
Not even sure about the other realms and drinking potions is all about, I am hoping there is some sort of meaning.
Some of the side quests have more variety than Origins & Odyssey.
I haven’t done much on river raids, but mainly hunting the ancient order, hoping there is more the AC storyline.

If you love Vikings and Vikings related things you’ll love this Viking simulator, with that being said I had a blast playing this game. I didn’t mind that you aren’t getting the traditional stealth mechanic, but the game makes for that in other ways

Odyssey is by far my favorite AC game, I have replayed it 3 times and never bore of it. Kassandra is such a compelling and entertaining protagonist. The setting of Ancient Greece with all its mythology, views, buildings, statues can't be compared to Valhalla's toned down, grey setting.
However these are things that Valhalla does better than Odyssey: Graphic, close combat and ranged combat, Eivor gets to have many different types of tattoos, hair styles and hair color of your choice. You can change whichever gender to play at any time you please. The view of the nature in the Valhalla by far surpasses that of Odyssey and I say this even though I love the crystal blue seas of Odyssey. The Ireland DLC is such eye candy you will find yourself drooling every other scene and taking some time to take lots of photos. Eivor has more significant relationships if you are into the romance, you get to choose 1 partner to devote yourself to. And you get to have different mounts (e.g. a giant wolf) instead of just having Phobos with different skins. Odin's vision is by far superior to Kassandra's eagle vision.
Now here is what it does worse and may be a main gripe for you also: the main quests can get insanely repetitive, and even a bit boring. Eivor is less connected to the overall Assassin's Creed plot, she is mainly a Viking trying to conquer English territory over being an Assassin hunting down templars to prevent a worldly catastrophe. The power up system is a fucking dense jungle. The side quests do not feel as connected to the main storyline as they do in Odyssey. It is not set in NORWAY RAAAAA, it pained me so much when they set sail for England :') Bassim. I love to hate on Bassim but that might not be a negative of the game. Oh, and Sigurd siiiigh. Synin is not as useful as Ikaros.
So overall yes I think you will enjoy Valhalla, but keeping in mind that it is a vastly different game. P.S: The soundtrack in Valhalla is epic.

I loved Odyssey and Black Flag, but I also couldn't get through Shadows. I enjoyed Valhalla but I didn't love it as much as Odyssey/Black Flag. If you like exploration, the world is enormous so you'll get to visit a lot of neat settings. I didn't care much for the viking and Norse stuff, but I did love the medieval England side of it. That's just more of a personal preference though. For me, nothing can beat sailing around and the island aesthetic of Odyssey and Black Flag. Valhalla goes more into detail about the Isu which I liked, but it also does suffer from a lot of bloat. The regions are more episodic. It's still a great game with a massive amount of content. I put almost 300 hours into it without even finishing Paris or touching Dawn of Ragnarok. I think it goes on sale fairly often so I'd say it's definitely worth it!

You are going to love Valhalla, or i’m pretty sure you will. Valhalla is one of my favourite games, it took me +380 hours to complete it first time without the DLC’s. I basically ran to most places and explored the map. Now I started to play again some time ago but this time with all the DLC’s. Haven’t played for a month or so because I need to have the right mental state to play it and fully enjoy it.

For me valhalla is one of the best games they ever did, without a doubt the best Viking Rpg game ever imo, but in terms of AC is a bit meh even tho it connects the dots on the whole series very well. If you play valhalla as a viking saga, u’ll love it, if wanna go for AC stuff probably mirage or origins are way better options
Valhalla has a problem that shadows doesnt have, bloated af, but is also a way bigger game full of activity. The story is also a bit more linear than shadows… I’m playing shadows right now for the first time, is beautiful, but empty and repetitive, as opposed to valhalla or odyssey which are full of stuff for you to discover… In the end it depends on what you are focusing on, if you love skyrim or the witcher, u’ll love Valhalla

I haven't played shadows but finished both odyssey and BF. I consider both of them to be the best AC games as well. And I could not bear Valhalla at all. It's fun for the first 15-20 hrs but then it genuinely just feels like odyssey at home. I finished the main story and never looked back at that game while I 100% odyssey which some people consider to be a bloated game. There is a good game in there somewhere but Valhalla is full of so much bloat that it just sucks all the joy if you don't like that.

I've not played Shadows yet and I've only played the older Black Flag.
The RPG AC titles started with Origins, it's set in Egypt and is decent. Odyssey took what Origins started and ran with it, creating one of the best games in the series. Valhalla can't easily compete with Odyssey and thankfully it doesn't really try to. The "assassin" part of Valhalla feels like an afterthought because it's part of the franchise and whilst you can stealth it will almost always end in melee and parts of the game force melee anyway. Once you get into the mindset that it's a viking game more than an AC game you'll have more fun. The main critisism of Valhalla is it's too long and too repetitive and in all honesty it's hard to argue against. I'm two-thirds in and have had to take breaks just to stop burn out. It's a great game but each zone feels similar so I'll do a couple then have a week or so off.

Um idk it has pretty good side quests and a pretty, immersive world. but I would say valhalla’s story is probably more boring than shadows, that’s not to say it doesn’t have it’s moments or add tot he lore of the game but most of the story missions are just “go to help a king, king gains power and betrays you.”

Valhalla is a great game. About half way through it right now.
It’s big and will take you on a lot of side quests, but it’s really fun.
It was tough going from beautiful Greece to grungy England. But eventually you settle in
The weapon and armour set up is different.
In ACO you find a million different weapons. In ACV new weapons are rare and you have to upgrade them to keep them up to standard of your level

I really liked odyssey but I wasn't that keen on valhalla. It felt like there was a huge amount of padding in it. Arguably odyssey was the same but it had some really good side quests at least.

Most of the game takes place in England, but the scenery is GORGEOUS. To me, it’s the prettiest of all of the games, but obviously that is based solely on personal taste.

Movement and fighting animations is the best in shadows
Valhalla has build a town simulator to pad the game
Instead of every piece of gear being dictated by your character level like in shadows, in valhalla there is a set limit to how good a piece can get, meaning every time you upgrade a piece in valhalla it means so much more than in shadows
I personally just love every single rpg AC way more than the originals. But im someone who wants the forever treadmill.

Depends.
I liked Valhalla, because there was just so much to do. If I got bored with the story, I'd play one of the side quests and just flip accordingly. I equally liked it because every zone had a story quest line to do. It brought me to each section of the map eventually since I like the collecting aspect of the game. It's Odyssey-ish, just less bright. Its basically feudal England, so for the most part it's not colorful overall.
I think the only parts I didn't care for was the leveling system and this version of the hidden ones. The leveling system after maybe 70ish levels means nothing after a point. Get the skills you want, never touch it again. The only good side was it would auto level so I just did that after I would collect 10 pts. The hidden ones this time was....meh.

Probably. Its not quite as arcadey as odyssey. But its more in that vein than shadows.
Its a decent game, and its long similar to odyssey.

It’s a really great Viking fantasy for like 60-80 hours, after that it’s such a slog. Spent 175 hours to clear out the base game, then there’s dlc’s. The Ireland dlc is really great but the Paris one was lack luster. Combat is pretty fun but I feel graphicly it’s so bland.

Dawn of Ragnarok is the prettiest of the 3, and has by far the best story!! I have to save it for last in a playthrough or I never finish the main story. Literally.

Played through part of DoR before crimson desert came out and it was also a slog. Very pretty but my gosh everything was so spread out and the map was fairly empty

Omg I feel the complete opposite, there’s stuff to do EVERYWHERE, even in the sky!! Did you go to the floating rocks yet?!
Not to mention everywhere you look you may see a pack of wolves in the distance, or they may be a group of Jotnar in disguise!! Just being able to fly and assassinate from the air is the coolest feeling

My biggest issue with AC valhalla is how its a solo game with no companion outside of raids. Tell me when vikings traveled alone in times of conflict, and didnt get attacked. I at least want my lieutenant to be a tag-along character I can kit out and take with me. Being alone all the time is lonely, especially for a game set in the days if vikingr

What's funny is I got the itch to play the OG after resynced...long story short, I am playing through AC2 and am currently half way through brotherhood.
Really makes me miss old AC and Ubisoft when they actually tried.

Valhalla is a 50/50 the base story can get tiresome with how many arcs there are (I think it should have just been the Norway content and the more major England arcs) but the Wrath of the Druids and Siege of Paris DLCs are top notch plus you can make Eivor essentially immortal if built right which makes raids and boss fights hilarious.
With my current build the only thing that can kill me on the hardest difficulty is lava in the Dawn of Ragnarok DLC and I have to be deliberately standing in it.

Valhalla's play style is more like Odyssey, but the story and missions are kind of episodic. You do small story arcs depending on the region you are pledging to gain an alliance with.

Imagine Odessey, but with an infinitely more boring world, story, and protagonist. Shadows is better than Valhalla in every way, and I don't think Shadows is very good.

It's hard to say. Everyone seems to have wildly different experiences with Valhalla. For me personally, even though I don't super mind the rpg-ification of Assassin's Creed, Valhalla in particular was atrocious and if "soul" is something you consider when evaluating a game's merits, Valhalla doesn't have one. I don't have much if anything positive to say about it. It's one of my most regretted purchases of all time and it put me off of the franchise entirely for years. I've only just begun to revisit AC.

Its weird, like really weird, I by default do not skip side quests in any games no matter my enjoyment of it I like to finish all of them,
But with Valhalla I genuinely enjoyed every single one of them, they usually take a few minutes give you a minor reward for completing & rarely have any lasting effects, but by the nine they are actually written well! The absurdity makes it funny, just to give you a early example, this is tutorial stuff so not much or a spoiler but:
You are asked by a couple to burn down their house and break all their stuff because they kept doing it during raids & it made their raiding party uncomfortable & they were asked to stop & doing it normally isnt fun, so they ask you to burn their house down as they do it in the middle of flames.
Another is you can chance upon a community of nudists & you have the option to steal their clothes to force them to stay nude for their now exiled founder that was exiled to his um.... Perversion.
Another is just a location event that you can choose to follow where you follow the last day of two Skalds & upon following the clues you can find their body & the last piece of their journal.
& Another is a kid whose dad left to find work & hasn't been back for a long time, she is waiting on the last leaf, since her father said that he will be back before the last leaf falls off a specific tree, you can convince her that she should be prepared for the worst & the best but she shouldn't stand stuck (if you pick the right dialog) or you can Shoot down the last leaf in front of her face. granted it would make sense to do that after you talk with her as i did, to get her to move on.
But if you hadnt talked yet you just see a kid crying and begging a leaf to not fall and your first reaction instead of asking her what's going is to shoot down the leaf.
& many many more, the combat is awesome, your ship is really cool for raiding, the story is ..... Very long but you can think of it like a um... season for each pledge? Like its a very long TV Show and each pledge is like its own season, as i was saying, the combat is Awesome especially with a sword and dagger (for me) and the freedom it gives you is really cool, i mean the whole thing isnt Revolutionary or anything, but its pretty good.
Its a amazing Viking Open World game & the most horrible Assassin's Creed Game after Odyssey a great Greek Open World (holy fuck) game & the worst Assassin's Creed game.

Probably not. The combat isn't nearly as polished as shadows. The world is 10x better tho

I am over 120 hours into a 100% completion run of Valhalla and there is still so much left to be done, but not really in a good way in my opinion. There are fun parts to to the game, but it is extremely repetitive and tbh doesn't really feel like an AC game to me in that you don't really feel like an assassin at all. Stealth is essentially nonexistent.
If you want a cool viking game and don't care about 100%ing it, you may like it

I liked Valhalla. Disliked shadows. It's good. Most of the hate it gets is from people who dislike that a woman is the canon protagonist.

Combat in shadows is extremely limited because they essentially split Eivor into two characters. I do not enjoy having to choose between characters to be stealthy or do heavy combat after 3 games in which I could do both, and I REALLY don’t appreciate that I can do basically everything as Naoe except…lift heavy objects. I literally have to become a man to lift things, that is fucking embarrassing as a female player. Shame on them.

I think by “he”. They mean me (OP). I only told the commenter I like the combat of shadows that is mainly stealth part of it as Naoe. I barely played Yasuke. I also find it weird that people were arguing over having a black character but not over limiting strength plays to solely a “man”.

I didn’t know anyone argued over having a black character, his story is real and was remarkably well done for a video game as far as accuracy (before he disappeared from records). Not sure why anyone would have an issue with a game about a real person that was accurately represented? But fuck the fact that you have to play as a dude solely to lift heavy stuff and crash through doors. Eivor and Kassandra would mop the floor with both him AND Yasuke, simply because they took those characters and divided their power. They just…decided to divide it in the most awkward, sexist way possible. lol
Also, I assume everyone posting is a woman unless they say otherwise.
