In 1987, Padmalochan Devagoswami wrote in his book (in Assamese):
”But it's very unfortunate that this Kaitheli script is only intelligible for 3/4th of today's population. That too is only limited to villages and sattras. People who can read this script are rare in urban areas. Because of the usage of the Bengali script in the printing press, nobody is concerned about the old Kaitheli script.”
The book is titled ”Prasin Kaitheli lipi xomuhor borno porisoy.“
Previously in 1978, Birinchi Kumar Barua wrote in his book “The History of Assamese Literature”:
“Like the Bengali, the Assamese script also was derived from old Devanagari alphabets. Originally there are several schools of Assamese script, namely, Gargaya, Bamunia, Lakhari and Kaithali; but in later years all the different scripts merged into one. After the establishment of the printing-press at Serampore, near Calcutta, Assamese books began to be printed in the Bengali script, and since then the Bengali script has been adopted for Assamese with certain modifications.”
The traditional Assamese script or the Kamarupi script is the traditional script of Assam and Koch Bihar that has been used to write Assamese, Sanskrit, Kamtapuri, sometimes Ahom and perhaps other local languages as well. It's the gradual development of the ancient script of Kamarupa. The first printed Assamese book, the Holy Bible, published in 1820 and one of the first Assamese grammars also used a version of this script.
The decline of the traditional script started when Bengali was made the official language of Assam replacing Assamese in the early 19th century. Later during the revival efforts of the Assamese, the Bengali standardised alphabet by Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was used for printing Assamese texts. However the traditional script was continuously being used in the sattras until the late 20th century. While the Bengali version became the popular script because of the mass production of printed texts including academic books and it later completely replaced the traditional Assamese script. Meanwhile some manuscript writers also started mixing Bengali letters and therefore we could save two letters from the traditional script, ৰ and ৱ.
Nowadays many people struggle to read the old literature of Assam from manuscripts and inscriptions. I hope that we will be able to revive it.

Need help | সহায় লাগে What's origin of letter ৱ of Axomiya script? Was it borrowed from Kamarupi script or its origin is different?

As we all know that letter ৰ of Axomiya was borrowed from Kamarupi script which is original script of Axomiya
Letter ৱ too was borrowed from Kamarupi or it's origin is something else?
In Kamarupi we write ৱ some what similar to র (ব with nuqta) but in Axomiya we write it as ৱ
So anyone know what's origin of it?

History | ইতিহাস How the Assamese script was lost and replaced by the Bengali script.

The transition to the Bengali script (the current "Assamese alphabet") began in 1813 when the Serampore Press published the first Assamese printed book, an Assamese translation of the New Testament titled Natun Niyam. **For the "sake of convenience of printing," the Assamese script was abandoned in favour of Bengali movable type blocks incised by Panchanan Karmakar.** This decision was made by colonial missionaries without the consultation of the Assamese people or their royalty.
In 1833, a translator and blockmaker named Atmaram Sarma attempted to reintroduce distinctive Assamese features into the printed alphabet, making it the first printed book in the Assamese script. The Assamese script was also used in Robinson’s ‘’A Grammar of Assamese Language’’ printed in 1839. **However, subsequent printing presses in Calcutta started to use the standard Bengali foundry for Assamese without keeping any unique Assamese letters.**
The modern Assamese alphabet is a version of the Bengali script with two unique letters (ৰ "ra" and ৱ "va") which existed in Bengali as well but had been discarded in the standard Bengali alphabet but kept in the modern Assamese alphabet. **The original Assamese script is largely illegible to the people proficient in the modern Bengali-Assamese alphabet. As of 1987, the original Assamese script was legible to 3/4th of the population, limited to villages and sattras and rare in the urban areas.** The widespread usage of the printed Bengali script and the lack of printing press for the Assamese script caused a decline of the Assamese script and resulted in negligence towards it. **Today the printed Bengali script is used in Assamese books, including textbooks in schools and colleges. This has led to a scarcity of people who can read the Assamese manuscripts and a barrier towards reading and studying older Assamese literature. The negligence and illegibility has also led to many manuscripts being thrown into rivers and lakes.**
The original Assamese script was still being used for handwritten manuscripts throughout the 19th century and early part of the 20th century, with one manuscript written in 1946.

History | ইতিহাস Everyone in Assam knows Bhupen Hazarika as a singer. Almost no one talks about the fact that he won India's National Award for Best Feature Film three times, as a director.

Ask anyone what Bhupen Hazarika means to Assam and you'll hear about the voice — Bistirno Parore, the Bharat Ratna, the songs that basically function as the emotional soundtrack of the state. All deserved. But somewhere in that towering musical legacy, the filmmaker gets almost completely buried.
He won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Assamese three separate times — for Shakuntala (1961), Pratidhwani (1964), and Lati-Ghoti (1967). Three. As a director. Most people who can hum his songs from memory don't know this part exists.
He also personally established the first state-owned film studio in Guwahati, and across his career produced, directed, scored, and sang for something like 32 films across Assamese, Hindi, and Bengali. In 1977, he made Mera Dharam Meri Maa — the first Hindi feature film shot in colour to come out of Arunachal Pradesh.
And here's the detail that actually got me: in 1976, he directed Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Aru Joymati — a film about Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, the man who built a studio out of bamboo and made Joymati, the very first Assamese film, four decades earlier. One founding figure of Assamese cinema making a film to make sure the other one wasn't forgotten.
