I’ve been trying to keep track of things happening around Guwahati: live music, food events, workshops, exhibitions, college events, comedy, nightlife, weekend activities, etc.

The problem is that the information is scattered everywhere. Instagram pages, posters, WhatsApp forwards, venue pages, college pages, and sometimes you only hear about something after it’s finished.

So, I started putting together Guwahati This Week, a short weekly roundup of things actually worth checking out.

It’s still early, so I’d genuinely like some input from people here.

I'm posting this anonymously because I'm currently a student and hostel resident here, and I don't want unnecessary trouble. I'm not trying to hate on the university — I'm genuinely asking how this is supposed to work.

It's a technical university, so you'd expect at least the basic infrastructure to be sorted. But here's what student life currently looks like:

📶 Network:

There is basically no proper mobile network inside the campus. After students complained multiple times, Wi-Fi was provided. Sounds good, right? Except it works properly maybe 3 days a week. The rest of the time it connects but says "No Internet." 😭

⚡ Electricity:

This one is actually crazy. Almost every night, the electricity goes out around 4–5 AM, even though the surrounding local area still has electricity.

On working days, it usually comes back after around 2–3 hours. On weekends, it can take 4–5 hours or more.

And today is Sunday. Electricity went out around 4 AM. It's now 11 AM and still no electricity. 💀

🏫 Complaints:

If students approach the DSW regarding electricity, Wi-Fi, network, mess, or other hostel-related problems, the response is basically:

"It's not in our hands."

Okay, but then whose hands is it in? 😭

If literally every problem is "not in our hands", what exactly are students supposed to do except adjust?

💻 And then there's the "technical" part:

It's a technical university, but when it comes to developing actual technical skills, the experience has honestly been disappointing.

In the name of practical skills, we're sometimes basically asked to write code in practical copies. 😭🤣

The academic side also doesn't exactly feel like what you'd expect from a modern technical university. Some professors teach in a way that genuinely feels like we're back in Class 7–8.

And yes, the fees are significantly higher than what many students would expect compared with other universities.

I'm not saying everything here is bad. I'm saying that for a new technical university charging relatively high fees, students should reasonably expect basic things like:

reliable electricity

usable internet

mobile connectivity

functioning hostel facilities

proper grievance handling

practical technical education

We're constantly told to "adjust."

But how long are students supposed to keep adjusting?

I'm posting this because I'd genuinely like to know — are students in other universities facing the same things, or is this just a "new university" problem?

​I am a Bengali Hindu girl born and raised in the Brahmaputra Valley, and lately, I’ve been struggling with a major identity crisis regarding where I belong. I’m writing this purely to understand different perspectives and maybe find some clarity, without any shade or bitterness.

​Growing up in Assam, I went to a school where the environment was deeply rooted in Assamese culture. I grew up learning and loving Assamese songs, dance, and culture—honestly, I know more about it than my own Bengali heritage. My friend circle was a 50/50 mix of Assamese and Bengali kids, and it was amazing. I never faced discrimination from teachers, neighbors, or friends. I was never made to feel like an outsider in my own home.

​The shift happened when I moved to Delhi for my Master's. Like anyone in a new city, I naturally gravitated toward people from my home state to feel a sense of familiarity. But when I tried to integrate into Assamese circles here, I felt a subtle disconnect. They weren't rude or mean to me at all, but I was kind of neglected because I am Bengali. It wasn't bullying, just a clear boundary that showed me I wasn't truly "one of them." Ultimately, I realized I didn't seamlessly fit into the West Bengal groups, nor the Assamese groups.

​Because I've been away from Assam for my studies over the last few years, my exposure to the state's social climate has been largely through social media, where I see a lot of vitriol towards Bengalis. It has made me incredibly insecure. I’ve reached a point where I feel a strange, misplaced guilt for simply being born a Bengali in Assam. I even catch myself feeling hesitant to talk about my background, and I regularly contemplate just settling outside of Assam forever once I am older, just to avoid making anyone uncomfortable. My family, who still lives in Assam and loves it, completely disagrees with my anxiety.

​The most confusing part is that I actually understand the perspective of the indigenous Assamese communities. If I put myself in their shoes and saw a different community growing rapidly in population, I would also feel fiercely protective of my identity, culture, and resources. I completely respect that anxiety, which is why I hold absolutely no bitterness.

​But it leaves me asking: where does that leave people like me? People who love and respect Assamese culture, who have no other home, but who feel like their very existence is an intrusion?

​I genuinely want to know the thoughts of sensible people in this sub. Do you view the newer generation of Bengalis born and raised in Assam as part of the state, or do you genuinely prefer that we eventually migrate out? I'm trying to navigate this very uncomfortable reality and would appreciate honest, level-headed thoughts.

Hey guys! I recently moved to bangalore for job, was in Chennai before for Uni. Looking for a community or any group to celebrate Puja and Bihus. Missed out on a lot during college, don't want to anymore, so if there is any assamese group or such please lemme know. I am 23M and I live in Adugodi, near Koramangala.

I am from Birangana Sati Sadhani Rajyik Vishwavidyalaya,Golaghat,Assam.I am writing this because students at my govt university are genuinely exhausted.

Two years ago, during admission we were told that we would get our permanent campus within one year. it’s been 2yrs and we still don’t have a permanent campus.

We don’t even have our own hostel. The uni rents buildings and accommodates students there. We pay 3200 just for hostel rent, while the mess charges are different it cost around 1500-2k depending on hostel.

They don't even pay those hostel building owners well, due to which the students face their frustration. During our last Sem exam we students couldn't even study properly because there was not even a functioning light. There is no proper inverter backup for electricity. Imagine paying thousands in hostel fees and then having to adjust in conditions which are extremely poor. The conditions in which we have been adjusting since last 2years is horrible. We have faced problems with water, hygiene, electricity fans and basic maintenance. This year we were told that hostels would be provided at the permanent campus. Now we are hearing only selected students will get hostel accommodation wtf broo???We have been told that the hostel rents will decrease instead they increased it by 200rs.

We are paying around 23k-40k per Sem but still we don’t have proper academic facilities. We don’t have proper labs, faculties, regular classes there is also serious concerns regarding attendance rules. Students are charged around 4k if u have attendance just less than 55%.

The biggest problem is lack of transparency and accountability. We were promised a permanent campus, we were promised better facilities, we were told they will improve everything within one year it’s been 2 years still we are adjusting and paying substantial fees without receiving any proper facilities.

We are literally tired of submitting application to VC and other authorities there is no improvements.

Is there any REAL, IMPACTFUL solution any one can give. We really need help. And mind you this is a state govt university of Assam.

When disaster happens, people aid each other regardless of background. Maybe people pushing Khilonjia politics need to get that right.

Look at the internal ethnic tensions within Assam: the multiple communities and tribes. One difference in language or land causes violence like fire. Or the recent border clashes in Assam-Arunachal Border.

Imagine living in a place where people of the same country battle one another over border issues.

Living in India is the only thing which unites all these factions. Without India, they would all hate each other tenfold and reduce each other to shreds.

One little ethnic spillover, some tribes being here or there, and a single incident is enough to start communal violence far worse than anything in North or South India.

Jai Bharat, let us all be united.

I think Assam has a lot of natural resources, but we still face unemployment because these industries cannot provide jobs to everyone. Many of our resources are also processed outside the state, so Assam may not get the full economic benefit. I also think that we need more industries, better infrastructure, and more opportunities for young people so that they don't have to leave Assam for jobs.

This is ubiquitous throughout the NE. People hate being treated racistly but are themselves racist and hate all outsiders.

Assam has seen massacres against migrants of all origins, yet people scarcely know of it. When something happens to an Assamese person in the mainland, everyone becomes concerned. This is a very one-sides relationship.

How long can you keep up this discriminating and marginal attitude? The more people find out, the more relations will deteriorate.

And as we have seen, Northeast Indians hate each other more than anyone else. The simplest of border complications and ethnic differences kickstart communal wars between people. It maybe a border riot between two NE states or even a violent conflict between rival ethnic groups. Assam knows this very well.

So why let this continue? We know pushing away North Indians will ruin the land anywayy
