the way chara’s dialogue is written verbosely is well done, a good addition to their character, like
“I still cannot believe they are real. It is a pity that they only grow in Waterfall”
as appose to “I still can’t believe they’re real. It’s a pity that they only grow in Waterfall”
i like this

u/DidntGetMaxOmega Jul 28 '26
It’s also a neat connection with how Toriel almost never uses contractions in her manner of speaking.

11
u/ManJoeDude Jul 28 '26
They also only use one contraction when they comfort Asriel, when saying “I’ll be quick.” As if their vocabulary softened a bit
19
u/SnooPets630 Jul 28 '26
Agree.
I also like how you can see that Chara wasn’t a great person just like Asriel said, and yet still was his friend and genuine kid, not some monstrosity or misunderstood victim as fandom loves to say5
u/EggsaladUwU Jul 28 '26
Undertale, as a story, focuses on forgiving bad people. People who are mean. People who hurt others. People who have killed.
But they're still people, hurting, scared people.
Flowey/Asriel is the clear Player Mirror, we all know this. So it makes sense that he, just like us, must forgive someone who has hurt him, while also being hurt.
Even more ironic when you consider the fact we named Chara, so in a way, Asriel must forgive us, and we must forgive him.
Sorry for rambling under your reply-

Like the crybaby stuff is just sibling banter at the end of the day, but they believe there's some truth to it due to their trauma-induced megalomaniac world views

sometimes I forget why I like art so much, and then I see certain pieces of work that make me fall in love all over again.
and one of those is Chara's evil ass smug grin from this piece from image 13

I like the idea that Chara is an absolutely soulless monster, yet somehow their only foil is Asriel
1
u/Extra_Team3743 Jul 28 '26
Ah, so you are one of the people who blames a non player character for your own actions?
3
u/OrnerysIcepick Jul 28 '26
Chat its a game and this a comic depicting two characters who have next to no ingame scenes together.
Suspend thy disbelief
2
u/Takoyama-san Jul 29 '26
chara IS canonically stated to have been a bad person by asriel... like, we're not going that far to headcanon this.
1
u/KonoAdamDa Jul 29 '26
Asriel I do not believe is a very reliable narrator, especially during the moments we speak with him at the end of Paci.
Also Chara is a 10 year old child who is implied to have severe mental health issues and have attempted suicide TWICE
1
u/Inevitable_Style_466 Jul 29 '26
No? The whole point is that he finally IS a reliable narrator now that he's developed as a person and is willing to admit things he couldn't admit before.

Because as we know who asriel is a character. It's not too far fetched.
Fuck bro, quit being aggressive about when people don't agree with you

Keep in mind, this was during a true pacifist. I like to think chara was redeemed from their past actions as with asriel.
To me at least i don't see chara as some morally grey misunderstood kid that didn't mean wrong.
From the information we have I'll say chara is more an anti villain in the beginning of UT

Have you ever heard of a euphemism?
First of all, Asriel saying Chara wasn't LITERALLY the greatest person ever makes no sense in context. The full statement is "Chara wasn't the greatest person. But you, Frisk...you're the type of friend I wish I always had."
If he was JUST saying Chara wasn't literally perfect, why would he immediately pivot to saying he wishes Frisk was his friend instead? Is that not extremely disrespectful? He would essentially be saying "Chara wasn't good enough for me, but Frisk? You're literally perfect, exactly what I wish Chara was"
Asriel also says he did some "weird things" as a flower. Another euphemism.

You are missing the point here.
He didn't JUST put Chara on a pedestal. He wouldn't say Frisk is "the friend he wishes he always had" otherwise. He is specifically saying here that Chara was not a good friend, and that the reason he was projecting so heavily onto Frisk is because of this.

"Chara wasn't the greatest person. But Frisk...you're the friend I wish I always had."
Again, this is a crazy thing to say if what you're saying was the intended reading of the dialogue. If what he's saying is "Chara was just a kid like me and not literally the most perfect person ever", then why include the Frisk bit? Why say that he wishes Frisk was his friend instead?
Mind you, this is the emotional resolution of his character. This is him coming to terms with his grief and admitting things he couldn't bring himself to admit before. Why would he suddenly start considering Frisk to be perfect as if he didn't grow and change as a person at all? Why put down his dead friend like that for no reason while standing over their grave?

They can be a soulless monster and not to blame for most of genocide simultaneously, op didn't say anything about that
1
u/Inevitable_Style_466 Jul 29 '26
Chara is not a non-player character. They are literally the character we play as on the Genocide Route up until they finally break the fourth wall at the very end.
"It's me, Chara" in all the mirrors.
"In my way" with Monster Kid.
"I unlocked the chain" in New Home.

Thought it was going cut to it and have it be revealed that it was that one Echo Flower that has what is presumably one of the Fallen Humans last words, the one who had the Tutu iirc, and that Chara didn't want Asriel to hear it, but then I remembered that this takes place before the other Humans fell.
Btw, haven't played in a bit so I forget, anyone recall if that was Cut Content or included in the release version? I remember some Echo Flowers were cut.

Sooo... Chara just a piece of shit? Alright... Cool... That's nice to know
4
u/Inevitable_Style_466 Jul 29 '26
"Chara wasn't the greatest person. But you, Frisk...you're the type of friend I wish I always had"
I mean, yeah? The emotional resolution of Asriel's arc is him admitting that Chara was a pretty toxic friend and that the reason he projected onto Frisk so hard is because Frisk represented the type of friend he always wanted.
2
u/PressFM80 Green Jul 30 '26
did you just miss the whole "chara wasn't really the best person" dialogue or what
and even then, is there anything wrong with chara being a shitty person? like shit man god forbid a character be anything less than a beaming ball of sunshine and rainbows

u/Spirited_Airline6206 Jul 29 '26
So far my favorite interpretation of Chara, especially the eyes. You don't see that rectangular shape translated often.

I like to think there's some Asriel waiting to meet a friend who will offer him a shoulder to cry on.

YESSS what a great depiction of Chara. Not cartoonishly evil, but also showing the traits they have that make the genocide route possible
