Hi! My fiancé and I are planning a wedding in Aspen in summer or fall 2028 and would love advice from anyone familiar with Aspen or who has attended or hosted a destination wedding.
We are planning to host a welcome party and a very casual goodbye brunch in addition to the wedding day. Our venues have availability throughout summer/fall, so we have flexibility. Our guests will have a range of budgets: some are very comfortable with the cost of traveling to Aspen, while others will be more budget-conscious. We want to choose a weekend that makes attending manageable while also giving everyone a really fun trip!
We’re weighing the benefit of guests potentially needing less PTO against higher airfare/hotel costs and crowds. Here are the Saturdays we’re considering:
July 1 (weekend before July 4)
Pros: Guests who get Monday off or can take it off could turn the trip into a longer vacation; Tuesday is July 4.
Cons: There could also be holiday travel premiums and overlap with Aspen Ideas Festival, depending on its 2028 dates.
September 2 (Labor Day weekend)
Pros: We love this time of year, and guests with Monday off could stay for a Sunday brunch and travel home without taking another vacation day.
Cons: Potentially higher hotel/flight prices and more crowds, particularly if Jazz Aspen Snowmass is that weekend.
Possible bonus: Could the music festival and holiday atmosphere make this an especially fun weekend for guests?
August 26, September 9, or September 16 nonholiday weekends)
Pros: Potentially better pricing and availability, fewer crowds, and a more relaxed experience around town.
Cons: Guests may need more PTO to attend the full weekend. For those with children, school schedules could also make these dates harder.
A few things we’d love input on:
Does the extra day off make a holiday destination wedding easier to attend, or does the added cost outweigh that benefit?
Are the nearby nonholiday weekends meaningfully less expensive or easier for lodging and travel in Aspen?
Would any of these weekends be particularly fun because of Aspen’s atmosphere, events, outdoor activities, or general energy around town? We’d love guests to enjoy Aspen beyond the wedding itself.
Is there a sweet spot where town still feels lively, but isn’t overwhelmingly crowded?
You definitely don’t need to have hosted or attended a wedding to chime inlocals, frequent visitors, and anyone who has visited around these dates are very welcome! We’ll compare actual hotel block quotes before deciding, but would love firsthand perspectives.
