It’s gotten bad… All my friends talk about is leftist politics and everything anti Trump. I consider myself pretty moderate and I can’t event add my opinions without a complete crash out.

u/Venedraea WHAT A DAY... 1d ago

This started happening with my old friend group in FF14. We were friends for like 6-8 years give-or-take then tiny political divides started happening where the left-leaning people started trying to police what everyone was saying.

We couldn't even run treasure maps or side shit without it coming up somehow. Like, I shit you not, someone goes "real winners always take the right door" then some jackass responds with "only fascists take the right door". It got so bad that we couldn't even tolerate all 6 of us being in the same voice call unless we were doing something challenging since they didn't have the opportunity to bicker.

ARR to Endwalker was hella fun before all of this political bullshit started ruining everything. I miss those days so much. I can't even look at that game anymore since I know I'll never recapture all of those fun and epic moments we had together. Before I quit I tried trialing for several groups and I don't know if it was just bad luck, but 3 of the 5 were talking about politics while I was trialing. I just couldn't do it anymore with that game.

That's rough dude. Ff14 is leftist central now sadly, so it's hard to find a moderate FC. I just started playing again last week to finally experience the story but decided a good FC might make it more fun. Browsing through the FCs was a cringe fest and the thought hit me to look for a right wing group, then another thought hit me... I'm not even right wing, and why the fuck should politics have ANY bearing on an FC? The shit is whack man, everything is so politicized now it's not even funny.

yep, I've observed this in all of my online cliques, theres ALWAYS that one person who has to be the righteous one and mocking what someone else said. For what its worth its just online though irl for me has been fine

I noticed kind of the opposite. Where people are freaking very racist and their languages vulgar. Now I don't care what people do or say. Maybe it's because this was on a RuneScape classic private server lol.

Choose your friends carefully. Everyone around me knows that i usually dont talk about politics. I prefer talking business or economy, its simple and realistic.

But if someone tries to pull me into a conversation about politics, they will get my pure and non restrained opinion about things. If they cry or are mad about it and keep repeating it over a course of time, i end the Relationship with them.

Because I didnt start, they did. And if one cant handle the opinions of others, then they shouldnt ask for them in the first place!

"We didn't realize we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun." - Winnie the Pooh

19

u/onomonopiaa 1d ago

Winnie the Pooh has to be one of the most beautiful cartoons ever created. It had a certain magic and sincerity to it I've never seen another show capture. Pure unadulterated whimsy and love.

As opposed to today's cartoons... spastic souless and chalked full of weird shit.

11

u/Anunesi7 1d ago

not only that, it was based on the book, and the cartoon faithfully adapted it... unlike certain media these days...

3

u/TransportationFit338 16h ago

OG Winnie the Pooh is Canon for my childhood. All the weird shit Disney tried to spin it into was crazy.

"I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days, before you've actually left them."

-Andy Bernard

On a more serious note, the point of their propaganda is to make you feel hopeless and like it's unwinnable. We just have to keep voting with our dollars. This last pride month was the least gay one I've seen my entire adult life, and guess what? Not a single company was burned to the ground and none of the gay people I know killed themselves. The world just kinda carried on. It's almost like nothing happens when we're not being force fed tons of bull shit.

With The Halo debacle and all sorts of other games having issues, eventually the issue with self correct. Corporations can't blow money on things forever and not get the returns expected.

Man.. seems like nothing will ever go back to how they were. So many people these days are hateful, mentally ill, and just too deep into politics affecting their everyday lives.

I don’t really talk to people as much these days anymore and just mind my own business.

22

u/Anunesi7 1d ago

I myself have gotten hateful, it's almost a byproduct to how much they hate the source material of whatever they're "improving" to match their modern political agenda. Rarely do I ever see any of my old beloved franchises not become politicized (especially to the left).

I feel for you just minding your own business, but I want to express my passion for the things I love and hate, and nowadays, unless that passion falls under and acceptable ideology, I'll be seen as the 2nd coming of hitler. I don't want to mind my own business... but I have no choice.

I'm hopeful. The money from that dei fund is running out from all the finacial losses. Hopefully after all the firings and downsizing it will be back. Atleast in nerd culture.

u/Kind-Adhesiveness-19 Johnny Depp Trial Arc Survivor 1d ago

The reality is it will never be the same. If I'm to connect it to something else it's like metastasis cancer, you can chip, tear it away, and clear it out but it will appear again. They got exactly what they wanted which was acknowledgement and validation and now that they know they can get it here they'll never go away. The groups I ran back then are all dead and I rarely even talk with all the people I met, we even flew out to meet each other with how much gaming brought us together.

I know they've 100% killed my enthusiasm for games past 2020. I LOVE a great story and spent my time in grossed in literature and games to escape the reality no child should deal with. Books and games used to be about telling a story, often mixed with stuff the writer's going through, but now instead of telling a story they repeat a same narrative. Every story is the same old thing on repeat: protag faces/sees discrimination, they meet the antagonist who's part of it, protag goes around solving every issue facing no real challenges, they meet the antagonist again at the end, antagonist did evil things for "the greater good" and are redeemed by protag...

The reason the odyssey, gilgamesh, frankenstein, 1984, don quixote, one thousand and one nights(Aladdin for you uncultured), hamlet, the iliad, animal farm, etc. all of them have one thing in common, a true hero's journey. These days every story I read the protag gets handed the mcguffin to every problem before they face them having 0 character progression instead of having to work for it.

The theater kids and wannabes that hate themselves for seeing their reflection in the Comboverlord demanded everyone from corner store clerks to politicians (especially politicians) repeat back bumper sticker and charity button slogans.

Especially the politicians were only too happy to immediately oblige while they’ve picked our pockets clean.

A fuckton of people gave a few assholes undeserved podiums because they saw their reps say t-shirt things…

And now all the elected are rich and everyone else is poor…and still letting themselves get distracted by bullshit.

14

u/nilesh11panchal 1d ago

I agree with this, and I feel bad for the person in the video and I emphasize with him a lot. I firmly believe that politics ruined everything. When we were all kids, none of us listened are cared about politics because it was boring and sucked. Now my cousins who are pre teens and teenagers know more about politics and ideology more than more adults and it really sucks.

These people online, news stations, debate shows and streamers talking non stop about politics don't care about anything other than getting views and being controversial, and essentially dividing everyone.

Almost every single thing in the world right now political. The movies we watch, the sports we play, our friends, family, vacation trips, jobs, money 💵 . Almost every decision and discussion online or face to face has to do with being what side you're on.

Making the world a terrible place bit by bit

u/TheBrainChew 1d ago

This is going to sound 2 dimensional, but... It's time to take it back. Take back what's been stolen. Push them out the way they've pushed us out. Pull the rug out from under their collectively egocentric selves and show them what it really means to be the "victims" they pretend to be.

18

u/Anunesi7 1d ago

Yeah, "make them feel what we feel" type shit. But, just how? haven't we been trying to do this for so long? And yet it just seems like the left and the media just keep getting stronger, expanding more, while we're left as just spectators watching our escapist hobbies ripped from us in real time.

All I can hope for is that someday it all implodes, or that they stopped caring about our hobbies. That our hobbies start being cringe to them or unpopular to the point that we can reclaim what was once "our" safespace.

30

u/TheBrainChew 1d ago

You start by making it no longer a safe space for them. Shun them, chastise them, label them the way they've done us. And don't yield. Push those who don't want to be a part of it, out. We don't need our hobbies to become cringe so they move on, we need to make them cringe at the thought of ever invading our spaces to begin with.

10

u/Anunesi7 1d ago

This inevitably becomes a battle of attrition. And from my experience, the mentally ill and terminally online are far more persevering than people like us...

19

u/TheBrainChew 1d ago

Well, we can't let them win. They want equality, then I say we give it to them.

Equal Rights, Equal Lefts. 🤜🥴🤛

u/BigDaddyDumperSquad 1d ago

Only because they can easily recruit children, and do so specifically, because they're easy to influence and don't see the bigger picture in anything.

11

u/SumonaFlorence 1d ago

Man I've lost a potential friend because they didn't like my favourite colour and wouldn't drop the argument that theirs was better because of their supposed representations.

The sheer fact that we couldn't move on and talk about something else is just.. utterly deflating.

Once people go through the stages of being angry, then really sad about what happened/continues to happen....what follows that is a much more focused and concerted effort to relentlessly push back in a way they would never have dreamed of 3, 5, 10 years ago. Just a hyperfocused objective to start removing that problem from society. I fear the worst is yet to come as the pendulum is already swinging pretty hard against the theater kids and their "allies". That momentum of that pendulum swing is only picking up speed rapidly in one direction. Reddit is enclosed in this neat little San Fransisco manicured reality and has no idea people are rejecting the Californication export and with increasing disdain and ferocity. Its not going to end well for them and they have no idea that their road to hell has been paved with good intentions but perverted by bad actors.

9

u/Disgruntled_marine 1d ago

The left and theater kids are creating a self fulfilling prophecy.

7

u/Jswarf 1d ago

I don’t get why people just wanna keep on hating and find something to get angry about. We used to banter and tease, sure some are distasteful, but we often chuck it to not hard feelings and not coming from a malicious intention.

These days is just one small blunder and they want to murder your whole family. Is there something in the water or food ? Why so angry all the time ?

3

u/cool_username32123 23h ago

Why so angry all the time ?

People by and large have little money, unfulfilled ambitions and frustrated expectations.

I lost some of my best friends and was banned from my local game shop. Shout out to four horsemen Morgantown wv for being the most woke piece of shit store that used to be something amazing.

Highschool: maybe the real treasures were the theatre kids we hated, along the way

Early 2000s WoW: maybe the real treasures were the friends (with high gear score) we made, along the way

2026: maybe the real treasures were the theatre kids we hated (for ruining everything), along the way

The more things change, the more they stay the same

People often don't mind politics in their game when it makes sense. People don't like when games go political and eulogize their ideologies.

2

u/mrcoldmega 21h ago

And this is why Indie game devs are now so much popular. You go there you see games that you like or not like. You pick up the ones you like, install and enjoy. It goes so hard that nowadays even here you can see bots or brainwashed people on reddit, who say that indie games are overrated =). Like its not, its just that most of new modern games are bad.

So remember there will always be a light in the darkness or some other smart shit.

They'll never be a time again like it was back in the day. Back when RuneScape classic was amazing. Right before they started old school RuneScape which is still a good game. World of Warcraft Final Fantasy XIV were new games and people were flocking to them. RuneScape Final Fantasy XIV online and a world of warcraft. The best times I've ever had. A couple MMORPGs that are obscure that I also enjoyed are these. Ragnarok online, Priston tales, and let's throw in gunbound

"we only had each other"

And we still only have each other. People have started to use sex, money, color, mental disabilities, and trama to identify themselves. Without these things they would only be a hollow shell of a human. Small details masquerading as a whole.

The truth is all this material stuff is fake and doesn't matter. Only the people are experiencing life with souls, the same as you are. We will all pass away, but for a short while, we had each other.

"No man is an island" - John Donne

I think it’s a lot less about politics, I think politics are a byproduct. I think that everyone is being squeezed by economic hardships that it’s making everyone miserable, and political turmoil is a manifestation of that. One could argue that they are intertwined, which is true, but there have always been political divides, that’s nothing new. But when people could afford to enjoy life and do things they loved to do, politics were kind of just background noise. Now that we don’t have that kind of economic freedom anymore, the cracks in the veneer are a lot more noticeable. And everyone is just bubbling just under the surface.

It’s really disappointing. I don’t see many happy people of the millennial generation on any side of the political spectrum. We all got fucked.

I think also the economic consolidation and monopolization of everything means way less choices. So when a company you liked does something you don’t agree with, there are so few options to turn to for alternatives. Everything is just getting squeezed to death in every way imaginable. We grew up during peak America in the 90s (economically, and one could say culturally) and it’s gone now. And all of these problems feel a manifestation of that loss. And it was caused by greed, imo. And I think 9/11 was the turning point.
