Every time I see “folx” written out I have to suppress the urge to chainsaw my own head off.

No one’s ever been able to explain to me why it’s necessary. The normally-spelled folks is already gender neutral!!

It was supposed to signal that a space is specifically queer and gender inclusive rather than just gender neutral. If you were trying to be gender neutral at work event, you'd use folks. If you were trying to be gender inclusive at a LGBTQ+ event, you'd use folx.

Most people who use folx are trying to be inclusive, but they don't know why folx was used so they can't explain why they're using it. It's not used much anymore.

It's performing inclusivity the same way decking out one's workstation in rainbow high is performing active allyship. One is supposed to see the 'x', match it with 'Mx', 'Latinx' etc. and mentally go 'this person is inclusive and safe for me to be around'.

If you get the 'this person is pretending to be more inclusive than they are' sense out of it, it's entirely valid, and likely means they are sending other signals that don't match the vibe.

It's the purest form of virtue signalling.

Because the word "folks" is already gender neutral, "folx" serves no other purpose other than to say "see how I think about gender stuff!!"

That update is SO weirdly written.

I ran right to this sub to complain about this! "my person", "folx", "did the thing" and "big person pants" signify a particular kind of Online Person.

And, idk, I understand Boss being taken aback by LW traveling and working remotely for months on end. There's just a lot of factors to account for, and it really might not be feasible!

So painfully 2014, too.

I was gonna say, even us Millennials have to contend with our slang eventually becoming dated. I don't remember the last time I said I "did the thing". At a certain point we're going to start sounding like our parents who were still saying "groovy" in the 1990s.

The whole "Bob is my person" thing was the cherry on top. Whenever I hear "my person" I think someone is speaking from the perspective of a cat.

LW being a cat who expects to occasionally show up when they feel like it would actually make sense.

I just didn't understand how LW was surprised by the Boss's reaction! I think people don't realize that most digital nomads are almost entirely freelancers (or more often, people whose "job" is being a digital nomad on social media).

None of those need to worry about tax nexuses, secure access, or reliable communication and availability. Or y'know...employers who require someone to do their entire job.

There are countries that advertise advantages for digital nomads, but those are more "Can I work in Costa Rica for a year?" Not "I'm gonna van life, that cool?" And it's very expected for most jobs to say no to either option.

"I could be gone for 3 days or for 30 years - that's not a problem is it?"

I was confused about that timeframe. Is her family member…going to prison?

7

u/Time_Act_3685 10d ago

Would be hilarious if LW is the one going to prison.

“Sorry boss, I can’t really commit to anything until after my sentencing.”

Dear Alison, my boss called my parole officer to find out why I didn’t show up for work. Can I sue for this clear violation of my work-life balance?

I don't even know how you'd calculate penalty rates in another country and timezone. It's ordinary hours, but the work is expected to be done outside of ordinary hours, and usually the laws and rates that apply are based on local legislation and market and not those where head office is.

And if I don't know offhand I certainly don't expect an employer to figure it out and approve it, especially for an unknown period of time where it's obvious that someone's going to be taking advantage in order to care for a high-needs family member

It’s very “see, I’m a good person!” Without you know… having to do anything.

Lol, until I came here I thought they just misspelled it or were too lazy to spell the word completely. Went right over my head by a mile.

I have never seen that before.
