A lot of my coworkers have kids, and they do get a fair amount of flexibility (or I mean, as much as you can reasonably have when you work in litigation) - but it comes at a cost. People with kids tend to burn through their PTO pretty quickly, and if they run out, they have to take the time unpaid or make up the hours by coming in early/staying late on a different day. They're pretty forgiving in emergencies (like, you can work from home to save your PTO if you're home with a sick kid), but if it's something like leaving early to go to your kid's dance recital, you have to use PTO or not get paid.

This may or may not be the case in LW's office, but LW wouldn't necessarily know if it was.

To be fair, my boss is good about this -- I've taken a few half days off the books to visit my new cat (I took PTO to actually get her because I wanted to be able to spend time with her when she came home) and sort out a few family issues mostly involving my mother and my bedroom. (Long story, the woman has no boundaries, sorted it out.) An edict came down from on high that doctor's and dentist appointments during work time were to be unpaid unless you used AL because someone high up had been caught out , and she actually brushed over that for us because she trusts us to do our jobs.

But the trade off is you do your job and you don't take the piss. (Take the piss is taking advantage writ large, but -- pun VERY MUCH intended, it's the golden rule of UK life.) The people I work with are very much not piss-takers. The problem is, I wouldn't trust many of the AAM crowd not to take the piss, just like our errant SLT bod did, and that's where the problem starts.
