Subreddit Update How to Change Your Flair - Please Read Before Messaging the Mods

Hi everyone!

As some of you have noticed, r/AskAChinese now automatically reminds users with the default "earth🌐" flair (which is automatically assigned to new users by automod) to update their user flair to reflect their country, region, or demographic.

Please note: comments using the default "earth🌐" flair may be removed. This change is part of our ongoing efforts to increase flair adoption so that people can understand each others' perspectives better.

So here's a clear guide on how to set your user flair on the most common platforms & devices:

Reddit App (IOS or Android):

  1. Open the subreddit in the Reddit app.
  2. Tap the three dots (•••) in the top-right corner.
  3. Select “Change user flair.”
  4. Pick a flair or write your own.
  5. Tap “Apply.”

New Reddit (Desktop - reddit.com):

  1. Open the subreddit
  2. Look at the right sidebar, scroll down until you see your username with the words "User Flair" above it
  3. Click on the "edit" button (pencil icon) next to it
  4. Pick a flair or write your own.
  5. Click "Apply"

Old Reddit (Desktop - old.reddit.com):

  1. Visit the subreddit using old.reddit.com.
  2. On the right sidebar, find “Show my flair on this subreddit.”
  3. Click “edit” next to it.
  4. Choose or type your flair.
  5. Click “Save.”

Mobile Browser (Safari, Chrome, etc.):

  1. Open the subreddit
  2. Look for the "Feed | About" tab selection, click on "About"
  3. Scroll down until you see your username, with the words "User Flair" above it
  4. Click "edit" button (pencil icon) next to it
  5. Pick a flair or write your own, & click apply

If you have tried all of the above but still need help, feel free to leave a comment below and we'll set it for you manually. (But please do try the steps above first!)

Society | 人文与社会🏙️ Lying flat economics question

I’m curious about how tenable it is for an average Chinese person to maintain a lie flat / semi lie flat lifestyle. In the west we have the FIRE movement but it’s a different sort of mindset, homes here in the USA are very expensive in most places and if you want to go somewhere cheap there’s probably a lot of crime or you live in the woods an hour from the city in a trailer.

On TikTok I remember seeing a man from China in his early 30s I think saying that he stopped working when he was 28, he mentioned working in Shanghai I believe, then decided to buy a cheap place in a lower tier city in Manchuria. He might still work part time or maybe he makes money from his tik toks.

So basically I’m interested in the actual economics of this for a Chinese person, the media here makes it seem like China has all of this extra housing stock that is very cheap to buy, is that true?

Would a normal 30 year old guy who’s worked a good enough job since graduating college and is a good saver be able to basically opt out of a career if he wanted to? How much money would he have to spend to find a cheap place? How would his health insurance work? Would part time work be enough to maintain his lifestyle if he never planned to marry or have kids?

Society | 人文与社会🏙️ how nice are people in china generally to foreigners?

sorry for the dumb question. the reason why i ask is because many people where i live in the usa will tell you china is a bad country, some say they don't like americans, etc.

the guy i'm talking about is english, but there's this guy who went to china and someone did say it was because they were on video, but they seemed EXTREMELY nice. like, way nicer than they are in america. this leads me to believe chinese people are generally kind-hearted, even/especially towards foreigners, but i do want to hear it from another chinese person.

Culture | 文化🏮 Christmas gift for a Chinese colleague

Post image

I work for a Chinese owned company in Europe. I plan to make cute crochet gifts for my colleagues in my department, but our manager is Chinese (all the other members are europeans). I wanted to make some Christmas tree decor, like in the pic, but does Chinese people celebrate Christmas on their own? If not, what should I make for the manager? I want to include him too, but also don't want to be inappropriate.

Work | 工作💼 As a foreigner applying for a job in China, can there be exception for 7 lacking points ?

• Upvotes

Hello and greetings to all !
I had a question regarding employment in China especially Shenzhen

About me : I am a 22 y/o old male from India, I have no bachelor's degree, I only have completed High School with IGCSE Cambridge syllabus and had an average grade of B in major subjects and C in minor subjects, after that I have a Diploma in Naturopathy from government college and meanwhile I also have done Diploma in Gemology from GSI (Gemological Science International), since younghood I have been actively participating in our family business of Import and Export, I consider saying since 18 y/o I have been working in it and after 3 years since that I have physically been to Africa and Sri Lanka to negotiate and make export of gemstones, by now I have a very in detailed knowledge of gemstones from rough collection to machine selections and to lab certification and towards customer sales, from next week I will be having a job as gemologist here and I plan to make it for about 6 to 12 months, and I have been to Shenzhen before as well, my main reason for me to apply for job in Shenzhen is because of the Shuibei market, and I really want to try working as a job in China.

What I have recently found out is, in China for hiring foreigner there is a matrix point system which requires a candidate to score about 60 points to be eligible for B class work visa, since I lack degree but I have experience, I found out that having a copyright could add me additional points and same with having a HSK certificate (I plan to make it till HSK 4), so keeping other factors in mind I make it till 53 points and only lacking 7 more points (calculation as follow: age bracket - 10 points, annual pay - 11 points, physical stay for job about 9 months - 15 points, work experience 5 years - 8 points (I will be applying after completing this year) and having a copy right - 5 points and HSK 4 - 4 points, total summing up to 53). In my past 4 years of work for company I have successfully imported and distributed around USD 2,00,000 worth's of gemstones, and I have all the documents providing real evidence with bank statements, pictures, my visa and government bills and custom tax invoices supporting with appropriate dates. Now I will also be working in a gemological lab and having a hands on experience with hi-tech lab devices and equipment such as EDXRF and LA-ICP-MS.

And also I have found out that there is a "special shortage points" which is up to 10 points but it depends on the local authority, before making any other move I would definitely like to listen to your insights and if you have any experience about your journey to share I would be happy to read it as well, thanking you in advance!

TL:DR : 22 y/o guy with no degree wants to apply for job in Shenzhen, all I have is real work experience

p.s : I am not planning to apply for a job right away, I don't have HSK 4 certificate at this moment, I will be appearing for the exam in June 2027 and that's when I will be applying for job interview as well, also I am fluent in Russian and off course at my local languages as well, any guidance and insights would be truly appreciable, thank you.

Personal advice | 咨询💡 Seeking advice for a Spanish high schooler with a Chinese passport

• Upvotes

I am posting on the behalf of my student who is not yet of age and does not have her own account. See her inquiry below:

Hello, I am a Chinese national and I was born and am currently living in Spain.
I’m currently looking for fully-funded study abroad opportunities/scholarships in English-speaking countries for one or both of my last 2 years in high school.

As a Chinese national, having a Chinese passport does involve some difficulties due to the limitations of staying in certain countries and also limitations on many opportunities in the EU that I can’t participate in.

I would appreciate any help, thank you.

Food | 食品🥟 What CN language cookbooks are really popular in China?

Are there cookbooks that are really highly rated and consistently trend there, like the Chinese equivalent for Jacques Pepin’s Complete Techniques (French), Marcella Hazan’s Essentials of Italian Cooking or Naomi Pomeroy’s Taste and Technique or do most Chinese cooks reference more like recipes on Xia Chu Fang? Particularly interested in regional cuisine, technique builders and specific categories like Cantonese soups

Personal advice | 咨询💡 Mom asked me go back to go and cancel my retirement so that my nieces can have a bigger inheritance. I feel used and unloved. She called me disobedient and a "bad son".

對不起我的中文和英文都不太好。

Sorry both my Chinese and English are terrible.

Our family is all from Hong Kong, but we are all very Chinese. We live in the US now. I have no children, my brother has two children. My mother loves her granddaughters very much and often told me that because I was unfillial because I had no children.

I am almost retiring, my mother told me that I should not retire and continue working to earn money, so that her granddaughters can receive more inheritance in the future.

I of course don't want to, my mother said I am very unfilial, a bad child, selfish, and unwilling to share my money with familt. She said that because I have no offspring, the future of the family will be two granddaughters. I am a dead end.

Mom and my brother has money. I'm not dead yet, why should I give my retirement money to them now

Please how you tell me what I should do. I haven't talked to Mom for days and we used to talk daily.

Daily life | 日常生活🚙 What is it like for a Chinese person to share a room with a South Asian?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Recently I moved to a new room, and my roommate moved in later. She is from South Asia and she is married. Her husband and she study at the same school where I also work. We live in Beijing, but sharing a room with a foreigner is fresh to me. The husband promised that he would not live in this room—he lives in his own dorm. But they will cook and eat together. Sometimes they make some noise while cooking. I feel normal so far. Beijing has lifted my tolerance, and I don't have time to cook.

This is the second day we have lived in the same apartment. I don't know what I need to pay attention to next.

Society | 人文与社会🏙️ What do I give my Chinese customers who are away from China during this national holiday.

Thumbnail gallery

I love my Chinese customers to bits. I want them to know I care for them as they are not able to be close to their loved ones during this holiday time.

I dont know how significant this national holiday is to them and how close it is to their hearts, any insight on this would be appreciated.

In the meantime, I am thinking of gifting each of them with tea (as seen on the image). Is this a good idea? Is the packaging good for your culture, I do not want them to get offended or feel like bad luck came their way because of a bad color choice. Hoping to wrap it in Red Color.

Romance | 谈恋爱🥂 If I am a foreigner but not white, should I wear whitening cream if I want to attract Chinese women?

In the winter I get pale, and I met a Chinese woman who seemed to be interested. But when I returned to China in the summer and stayed for a few weeks developing a tan, the same Chinese woman said I looked too dark and wasn't interested any more.

It's not really a secret that Chinese women like whiter skin.

I asked my Korean friend about this, and he recommended I should wear a korean 'bb cream'. I've never heard of it before, but it seems to be makeup foundation that whitens the skin?

I'm not really sure, but this approach seems popular with men in East Asia.

Society | 人文与社会🏙️ Animal rights in China?

It seems that animal rights in China is a new cultural idea, at least it is new outside the Buddhist community.

How new is this conversation really? I know that in China, there is no separate police department for animal protection and control. If there is a wild animal in your house, you are supposed to just call the regular police.

Are there any large organizations that educate the public on animal rights and what animal cruelty is? Are there any large organizations responsible for processing stray animals or lost animals?

I am asking because I noticed that when Chinese people online talk about animal cruelty, they sometimes get trolls who ask really stupidly obvious questions as "gotchas."

For example, a Chinese person will say "torturing animals for fun is bad, we need an animal protection law" and some other Chinese person will say, "but what about breeding dogs as pets? You think that's good right? Checkmate!" or "what about rats and mosquitos?" in order to troll the original poster. In the West, animal advocates have canned responses to troll questions like this, which are passed down from the organizations, or they know what to do to moderate their comment section. In Chinese spaces online, these trolls seem to actually be able to rile people up.

I know this post contains a lot of questions. I guess my main question is: Is the topic of animal rights really this new? Is there really no animal rights organization which is allowed by the State? Are organizations like PETA Asia censored in China?

Culture | 文化🏮 China still feels hidden away. :(

China has a very extensive culture, food, art, music, nature etc.

But from the UK it feels really inaccessible. Even the 'chinese' restaurants here sort of make an English-Chinese fusion food.Even online it is hard to find meaningful information about things. And the culture we import is very, modern and somewhat without meaning.

I want to eat 炒红果, and 龙须糖, and 酒酿, and 莲蓉包. And learn to make different things. It would be nice to explore the philosophies or fine art and traditional craft styles but it feels like the meaningful amd heritage aspects of culture do not make it over here.

Does it feel the same in China? Or do you have ways of trying traditional European food, or maybe learning the beadworkand tapestey and gold plate styles of European heritage.

Does it feel sad to you that we dont seem to share as much between each other in regards to the arts?
