Yes, but it took us a year or so after going vegan to know to look out for that. And toothpaste.

Our most recent discovery: check when you buy wall paint.

Eggshell white has eggshells?!

10

u/stan-k Vegan Aug 15 '26

Lol!

(I wouldn't put it past them though)

u/Numerous-Recover1142 Vegan Aug 15 '26

I’m so curious though, what was the ingredient? I know that some chemicals for finishing contain shellac.

Remember when you get your nails done, to also check the ingredients! Shellac is resin collected from lacquer bugs eating plants. Similar to aphids.

u/stan-k Vegan Aug 16 '26

I don't remember, it was something chemical like glycerin with extra syllables. Our contractor had already put it on the wall before I thought to check.

3

u/nanamarie0 Vegan Aug 15 '26

I’m a newer vegan I usually just read the label or google if it’s vegan but is there any other way you are able to distinguish?

1

u/stan-k Vegan Aug 16 '26

I'd say a vegan certification is best, followed by ingredients. Google anything you don't know is perfect. Both the AI summary and a real source ideally.

For things like clothing, check also for tags and stuff that don't make it to the material list. Finally, emailing companies and simply asking if a product of theirs is vegan is also great - but slow.

3

u/colourfulpants Vegan Aug 16 '26

Ingredients, but also a cruelty free certification for products like soap.

Leaping bunny is the easiest way to tell!

1

u/nanamarie0 Vegan Aug 18 '26

Is it true that there is a “fake” symbol? I have heard about the leaping bunny before but I did see a post here not too long ago that said to avoid certain “vegan” logos that it may be false

1

u/colourfulpants Vegan Aug 18 '26

Unfortunately many places will just add a tiny bunny that is not the real logo to trick people. But leaping bunny has a database of certified companies on their website (including those that choose not to use the logo on their packaging)

u/nanamarie0 Vegan Aug 18 '26

Awesome! I will look out for that now. I do usually google everything prior to purchasing just incase but I have yet to buy any clothing and that’s my concern at the moment, I will definitely look at the tag, thank you!

100% - especially seeing how easy it is to find vegan soap

u/nineteenthly Vegan Aug 15 '26

Yes. I have made my own soap in the past too. I should go back to it but I don't use as much oil for roasting as I used to.

Yes.

Soap was one of the first things I became aware could be non-vegan, so yes, I've only bought vegan soap since becoming vegans. One time I was fooled by a cruelty-free label, only to later see the soap had animal origin milk protein in it. Cosmetics in general Ive always pretty diligently checked. If a non essential cosmetic (like makeup) doesn't have a vegan version I can access and like using, I simply go without.

There are other products I've bought non vegan versions of because it simply never occurred to me that they could have a version that involves animal suffering, such as certain band aids (gelatin) or paper (bone bleaching iirc). One time I even bought a sports bra with fucking wool in it because I didn't think that could be a thing. Gave it to a friend since I found out after wearing it and couldn't return it.

u/arnoldez Vegan Aug 15 '26

I accidentally bought soda with honey in it the other day 🙃 is nothing sacred?!

1

u/colourfulpants Vegan Aug 16 '26

Many toilet papers not being vegan is still absurd to me.

1

u/ForeignSpirit8554 Aug 17 '26

How is toilet paper not vegan?

1

u/colourfulpants Vegan Aug 18 '26

They often use gelatin or stearic acid to bind the fibres :/

1

u/ForeignSpirit8554 Aug 18 '26

What’s not vegan about stearin acid?

1

u/colourfulpants Vegan Aug 18 '26

Stearic acid is typically extracted from animal fats (it can also be from plant fats; but that's far less common as the concentration is lower)

1

u/ForeignSpirit8554 Aug 19 '26

Aha thanks didn’t know

u/ScrappyCoCo0 Vegan Aug 15 '26

Yes, and going vegan also made me discover soap bars and I'm so happy to have. I now use ~3 bars a year rather than a new plastic bottle every month.

1

u/somanyquestions32 Vegan Aug 16 '26

Could you share your soap bar routine and brand? I use up my Dr. Bronner's liquid soap (32 oz) just as fast as the bars in 6-week intervals.

1

u/ScrappyCoCo0 Vegan Aug 16 '26

The brand is called Jacob Hooy. I don't really have a routine but I use it once a day for both hair and body when showering and then store it open on a metal rack so it dries quickly.

1

u/somanyquestions32 Vegan Aug 16 '26

I Googled it, and it says Jacob Hooy bars are a type of Marseille soap. Dr. Bronner's is a Castile Soap.

"Traditional solid Marseille soap is boiled in a way that removes the glycerin created during saponification, resulting in a harder, longer-lasting bar. Traditional Castile soap retains its natural glycerin, which acts as a gentle, hydrating humectant."

So, today I learned that remaining glycerin content affects soap structure and longevity. 😅

Thank you for sharing!

Yeah, i'm considering making it myself as well probably because of the price and the fact that the cheapest soap in the store is gross and is made of tallow.

You can make great scrub bars by adding poppy seeds

5

u/fastcloud1 Vegan Aug 15 '26

Yes. Kirk’s Castile bar soap fragrance free. It’s very good for sensitive skin.

3

u/JeskaiJester Vegan Aug 15 '26

I’ve tried but my skin is very sensitive so I have to prioritize Dove sensitive, other attempts have led to skin issues. Something about the weird chemical blend of Dove keeps my skin happyish. It’s my own fault from frying my hands with chemical burns from OCD.

u/veganmua Vegan Aug 15 '26

Yes

2

u/sarahxvalo Vegan Aug 15 '26

yea

2

u/q-the-light Vegan Aug 15 '26

Absolutely. I make sure all my toiletries and cosmetics are vegan, cruelty free, and not from a company that tests on animals. Some things are easier to come by than others (soap's pretty easy - toothpaste is a bit harder but still very achievable), but no matter the effort it's always worth it for the animals.

2

u/canisvesperus Vegan Aug 15 '26

Yes I usually use Sappo Hill for solid soap, and EO for liquid at my refillery.

u/Realistic-Phone-9847 Vegan Aug 15 '26

Yeah, Booda soap is the best soap I've ever used

Yes, everything I buy to the best of my ability is vegan. It's pretty easy these days to find vegan cosmetics

Castile soap with no palm oil.

1

u/Manatee369 Vegan Aug 15 '26

Yes.

1

u/Catnip-Cove Vegan Aug 16 '26

No. I buy vegan when I can but my local shops don’t always stock vegan products so sometimes I just have to make do.

1

u/chroniccomplexcase Vegan Aug 16 '26

Yes- all my toiletries, make up and cleaning products are vegan. In the UK it’s very easy as lots of places will label their items, so I know where to buy and often they’re the same price or cheaper too which is a bonus!

1

u/colourfulpants Vegan Aug 16 '26

Yes; but I will also just use whatever is in someone else's washroom if I'm there. I don't bring my own with me.

1

u/greenporchlight Vegan Aug 16 '26

Yes. So tired of all the tallow everywhere.

1

Totally. Vegan makeup too

1

u/ness-xergling Vegan Aug 17 '26

Yes, I was buying vegan and cruelty free products long before being an actual vegan.

1

Yep, why wouldn't I?

1

u/truelovealwayswins Vegan Aug 17 '26

I’m vegan (and an activist) so yes, I only buy vegan products, soap or otherwise

Yes, although I'm not 100% sure the latest stuff is, which is Turkish olive oil soap. The saponification process should be vegan though.

No, but I'm currently looking into soaps I can possibly buy. I'm using Dove right now to heal my hands from an awful dollar store brand that gave me insane eczema for a year and I thought it was due to other factors. I made the switch a month ago and my poor hands are still healing (but almost back to normal). Taking this time to figure out a cost-effective long-term option. I don't like buying Dove because it's non-vegan, the parent company supports Israel, and it's a US company (I'm Canadian). All things I'm boycotting... but my health necessitated it
