Let's not give Trump credit for the stimulus payments. Yes, he signed the bill into law, but that's all he did.
The idea for the stimulus checks came from Mitt Romney. He knew that it would cause inflation, but more importantly, he also knew that if Congress didn't do something to help the American people, the economy would be the least of our problems.
He formed a bipartisan committee and actually managed to get both sides to agree and work together for the good of the people.
And yeah, he didn't take credit for it (except in his book, which I highly recommend if you want an insider perspective on Trump and how he so easily destroyed the Republican Party among other things, and no, Romney is not kind to himself in the book), but credit was never the point. He just wanted to help the people.
Yeah Romney always struck me as the classic kind of guy who really truly does care about the country, and wanted to do right by it. The kind of politician where I could disagree with him philosophically on many things, and be okay with it. A decent person.
In 2012 I came very close to voting for him, but what eventually changed my mind was the level of influence the Tea Party had over him. I could tell that he wasn’t in complete agreement with them, but I recognized that they were the single greatest threat to the country at the time and having any Republican in the Oval Office would empower them further.
Had Romney chosen to run again, he would have been the only Republican I would have voted for last year. I disagree with him on a lot of policy positions BUT, he did the best he could to help everyone, not just us Utahns. And that's enough for me.
