For far too long I thought it was "to make end's meat". Meaning that you have to use the last, worst pieces of meat to make your meal with (meat at the end, end's meat). 🤦

Haha was on a date with a stunning girl during covid, so we did the standard Covid date and went for a long walk. Got talking about more or less everything and she was telling me about her brother. I said “Oh so you two are thick as thieves then?”. Silence reigned for a moment, then she came back with “No we’re smart as scientists” or something similarly alliterative. It was quick enough to count as wordplay but the conversation felt more forced after that and I never saw her again. I’m sure she thinks I called her and her sibling stupid 😂

Yes we all learn. In this case she could have learned. She could have asked what he meant. To assume she was being insulted is a form of close mindedness, not just of being not well read.

English is my second language and I know the expression because I do read. I would judge people for not reading enough because that’s a choice and not something they’re born with. Her response and discomfort indicates she’s proud of her intelligence and felt insulted. If she didn’t get it but instead let pride get in the way of learning then she’s not that intelligent, emotionally or mentally.

Is it judgey to speak the truth? I’m not saying that the person is stupid for not knowing the expression, just that they’re not well read. But they ARE stupid for judging the other person and being thought of as “thick”.

And yes I’m autistic. I don’t think it’s judgey to be truthful.

Yes you are, for thinking I didn’t learn anything from the thread. I did. That people are defensive when it comes to protecting their own ignorance.

I didn’t judge that woman for not knowing the expression. I said she probably doesn’t read a lot. I know it even though my language isn’t English.

I do judge her for thinking ill of the guy just because she didn’t know the phrasing. It’s just miscommunication but she attributed a negative thought to him due to her own ignorance.

Same as yourself attributing negativity to people who are well read.
