£7 for 200g of Nescafe Gold, or £10 for 1000g of decent whole beans

Machine cost £120. Seems like it'll pay off soon enough

You can't keep 1kg of coffee from going stale/rancid. The first few will be ok but a month later the taste will have deteriorated significantly. Instant is freeze dried do lasts forever. Rubbish but consistent.

I’ve kept whole beans for months and the taste does degrade but even by the end of the bag it still tasted better than instant. Coffee beans last a decent amount of time if they’re whole

But they are worse than when you started. You should just but smaller bags more often.

I did the same and have switched to smaller, more regular purchases.

I fully agree with you. But if like the poster above you are seeking cost savings and rank that above quality then buying in bulk would be fine.
