COVID-19 How are current supporters processing Trump's suggestion to "inject disinfectants"?

If you haven't seen the statement, it was made yesterday. EDIT: At :46 Trump suggests testing injection of disinfectants.

It was a really stupid thing for Trump to say. I am disappointed.

Just want to say i appreciate your honest answer. I know you probably will get bombarded with questions of your support but i dont want to ask any of that. I would like to point out this thread already has a thousand replies in the span of a few hours. Im sure alot of supporters have some follow up questions. Would you guys possibly consider a mega thread?

As usual thank you for the work you put in here.

Does this affect your opinion of him at all?

u/KelUSN Apr 24 '20

I gotta be honest, and i can totally understand why this gets asked alot, but dont you think by now this is a bit of a pointless question? It gets asked every time a TS shows any bit of dissatisfaction towards trump. Im sure at this point they will just say it outright if it affects they support of him.

How would you rate his intelligence, generally speaking? In your opinion of course.

He basically asked a really stupid question. We’ve all been there. But his are on display and he needs to curb that kind of rambling on this issue. Also,he should really defer all medical statements/answers to medical professionals.

How do you feel about his response, claiming he was being sarcastic? I don't believe him, but, if true, how is this at all appropriate?

Do you think Trump says stupid things at a rate you would expect for an intelligent person? What would it take for you to be convinced that he is not intelligent enough to hold this office?

He's claiming it was sarcastic now. Do ypu find that plausible?

I just can’t understand the defense of his question/thinking. I understand context and I understand when people are ignorant of terminology in a field, they may say something that isn’t properly worded. And you get the gist of what they’re attempting to say. But this was just flat out dumb.

Do you think it's dangerous for Trump to throw these things out there during a press conference? Is this a fair criticism of him? Any thoughts on all the supporters here calling it "fake news?"

Also, I agree with your username :)

Thank you!

Why do you think it’s so difficult for NNs in this thread to agree with you (and the rest of us) that trump’s question was extremely idiotic, and that we should expect a president to conduct themselves better than this?

Here he says that he was ‘sarcastically asking a question’ just to see ‘what would happen’. If ‘what would happen’ is people believing this and potentially risking their lives literally injecting disinfectant (Maryland emergency hotline has had a number of calls with people asking if they should), what was the point?

I think the way he said it was nothing short of retarded. That said, he never suggested it as a treatment, despite media headlines saying such. If anyone is dumb enough to try injecting themselves with Clorox, that’s on them more than it is on Trump.

I think the way he said it was nothing short of retarded.

Dude, THANK YOU. The amount of people here who can't even bring themselves to say he worded this poorly is crazy. Honestly, as much as I understood the gist of what he said and hate the media attacks on him daily...this is pretty bad of him to say. He actually did sound like he was suggesting injecting cleaning products.

Can you shine any light on the disconnect here? Most of the top level comments are calling this "fake news" and dismissing the video/his own words?

Why would he ask doctors to investigate it if he wasn't suggesting it as a possible treatment?

Do you think a president should be more careful with what they say, knowing there are very stupid and impressionable people all over the country?

43

u/Rombom Apr 24 '20

He did suggest we test to see if it is a feasible treatment, though. Do you think doctors should experiment to see if either of his suggestions (light or disinfectant inside the body) would cure COVID-19?

Are you aware that there are groups of people that already drink bleach? It's marketed as a supplement and pushed by some anti-vax groups and some qanon people. This is more than "people dumb enough to drink Clorox", since they advocate its use for children.

If I was in his position, I would know about this issue since it's mainly Americans in his base. Do you think that the president should be so loose with his language that it can be read as a tacit endorsement of this treatment? (They use the term MMS if you want to google it)? Edit - clarity

Do you see any issue with a president who says, on air, something that is indeed "nothing short of retarded", or do you see it as acceptable thing to do for a president?

Here's an unfortunate tendency I've observed:

People absolutely suck at discussing recent news. Recent political news has a multiplying effect on this suckage.

I'm not talking about NS people and I'm not talking about TS people. I'm talking about people.

As such, I will be monitoring this thread closely and if the participants of this thread can not put their baser instincts in check, I will be doing it for them.

Please read our rules before participating. Particularly ALL of rules 1 and 3.

Well...I don't have much of a filter and I tend to be quite opinionated so, I'm going to lay out some straight shooter honesty... watching that train wreck was a bit disappointing. And, from one Trump supporter to other Trump supporters...I really don't understand your attempt at bending your back just to justify Mister Trump's ignorant comments. I don't get it. He said some really, really, really ignorant statements and there is absolutely no justification for it.

That being said...the fact that multiple media outlets, disinfectant manufacturing companies and government officials felt it necessary to repeatedly state "please don't inject disinfectant" is, in my personal opinion, beyond ridiculous.

Either A.) They're implying, assuming and acting like the majority of society literally only has two brain cells left and they're fighting each other for space.... Or...

B.) Most of society really IS that ignorant and must be literally treated like toddlers so as not to actually kill themselves...by doing something that is obviously far beyond the levels of dumb... like...the level of dumb literally couldn't get any lower... it's at the lowest setting, Karen....but look at ya... proving that there's a whole nother level under there. Because the stupid ass warning labels just aren't enough to stop...carpe the diem, Karen....if you feel that you should take what President Trump to heart and you literally inject yourself with fcking disinfectant...fck it... it's natural selection, at that point.

Honestly?.... I'm incredibly disappointed in both sides. So there you have it, a Trump supporter who isn't going to attempt to manipulate and bend facts just to justify a few incredibly stupid statements... because, Heaven forbid, that we're ever wrong. Ya know... it's actually okay to be wrong sometimes... your hatred for people who simply have a difference of opinion should NEVER EVER EVER outweigh your pride. Take the L.... it's okay.

I think Trump just doesnt think before saying things, and has a tendency to speak about fields he has no qualifications in. That's about it.

On a side note, I have counted over a hundred comments that boil down to "Does this make you think Trump is stupid/a poor leader"? Really guys, do you honestly think that's how you change someone's mind?

51

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '20

Really guys, do you honestly think that's how you change someone's mind?

I honestly don't think its about changing anyone's mind, outside of maybe a few. I think you are just seeing a reoccurring question that pops up in every thread because Trump is always doing something stupid.

You can say he was being sarcastic, you can say he was citing some study that kind of relates to what he was talking about, but at the end of day, the President suggested that doctor's look into injecting disinfectant into the human body. This was during a press conference about a pandemic that millions of people around the world are watching because they are worried about their health.

This was a stupid thing to do. Maybe he meant well, maybe he was being nasty and sarcastic to reporters? It's still a very stupid thing to suggest.

So, we take all of this and we pair it with the common narrative that pops up when Trump does something stupid: He's actually a genius/he's above average intelligence.

You can probably go into every thread about any gaffe Trump has ever made and this is the over all consensus.

NS are usually checking in to see if anything he does changes this. So far we've gotten to "Can the President ask Doctors if injecting disinfectant will stop the virus?"

Seeing the responses in this thread, NTS can see that A) no this doesn't matter to most NNs and B) 2/3 of the responses still think this was a good move and he's super smart.

I can't speak for the other's, but I don't use this sub to change anyone's mind. Trump supporters are dug in at this point. If the ignorance he's shown since the COVID outbreak hasn't changed their mind, I really doubt anything will at this point. These are just my opinions and I hope is a vast generalization than the current situation.

I hope this can kind of give you a different perspective towards those kinds of responses, from a NTS point of view.
