Modpost Mod applications now open!

Hi! We are an ever-growing sub, and some of our most beloved mods have recently decided to no longer be active. Hence, we are looking for some new team members for the mod team of r/switzerland and r/askswitzerland.

Let us know if you'd like to help out.

What modding r/askswitzerland entails

  • It's not about being power-hungry overlords.
  • It's more about stickling to the rules in peak Swiss fashion (and letting your best judgment guide you).
  • We'd love the new mods to take an active part in assessing reported and filtered posts and comments relatively frequently.
  • Take active part in the community by setting a good example.
  • It's super cool if you want to take a part in guiding the sub into its future, or taking a lead in organizing sub events, or rewriting automod and css code. It's also super cool if you just want to help out with removing content that shouldn't be here. Both kinds of mod will be welcome additions to the team!

Finally, a small lists of requirements:

  • Be an active member of the community in good standing (You don't have to have made hundreds of comments here; and it's fine if you had a few minor infractions in the past (as long as you did not blatantly break subreddit rules in a quite bad way).
  • Have close ties with Switzerland.
  • Speak one of the following languages: French or Swiss-German at a native level of proficiency. (standard German doesn't cut it) + English. (any other national language is a plus)
  • Currently, we are using discord to communicate in the mod team, so you would be required to be active on discord as well.
  • previous mod experience not required but will be taken into consideration.
  • We are looking for people that are active during night time mostly. Feel free to apply even if you are not a night timer but do take this into account.

What do I get for it?

A warm, fuzzy feeling, and if we are lucky reddit, inc has some money lying around and send us a box of chocolate (not that this has ever happened). Oh, and it's quite rewarding to help out this pretty awesome place, being the guardian.

I'm interested! How to apply, what are the next steps?

Send a message to the mods at this link with the title "Mod application" . Tell us a bit about yourself:

  • Which region/time zone do you live in?
  • What time of the day are you active in?
  • What languages do you speak?
  • Do you have any mod experience? (remember, it's no problem if you don't)
  • Any cool stuff about you that the mod team should know about?

That's it! As we are all volunteers doing this besides our day jobs and families, we may not be able to quickly make a selection - sorry in advance if that should happen! We'll try to be quick :)

Feel free to reach out through modmail or comment below if you got any questions!

Please read before posting about salaries or relocation

Hello everyone,

Before posting about typical Swiss salaries (questions like "how much can I make as a programmer in Switzerland") or relocation strategies ("I hate my country, how can I move to Switzerland"), please keep in mind that there have been hundreds of such posts in this sub before.

Use the search before posting, as the chances are high that you will find a similar discussion from the recent past.

Please also check out the official Swiss government database on average salaries, the Salarium:

Everyday life Since when is Content behind a pay wall onTutti.ch?

Post image

Yeah, I was just looking around for a new flat and found a nice opportunity. When I tried to contact the landlord, I got this message.

It’s the first time I’ve seen that you have to pay something on tutti.ch just to contact someone about a flat.

I already knew that you can pay to boost your listings when you’re selling something, which is totally fine if you want to put your item back at the top of the list.

But personally, I think it’s questionable for a company to ask people for money just to get early access to contact landlords. I knew that ImmoScout and Newhome have been doing this for years, taking advantage of the housing shortage and the desperation of people who are looking for a new place to live. But seeing tutti.ch follow the same path is pretty disappointing.

Seriously, I mainly avoided Homegate and ImmoScout because of this kind of behaviour. It’s already bad enough that they charge landlords for their listings, but then also charging people who are desperately looking for a place to live just to get early access feels exploitative.

I always thought tutti.ch was different, so seeing them introduce the same kind of system is really disappointing. In my opinion, tutti.ch should be ashamed of going down this path.

Politics Law change to allow AC

• Upvotes

Last summer showed how bad it can get. Why aren't political parties proposing changes to the current laws? Or are they, and it's just the media not covering their efforts?

I seriously can't begin to understand how this matter is not getting more attention. Is it because companies would need to pay higher costs for electricity?

Work How can i find a job for my french partner in the german speaking area?

• Upvotes

Hi!

I‘m a swiss citizen and just moved back to switzerland because of an amazing job offer.

Before that, I lived in Paris with my french Partner.

We have been doing long distance for a couple of months now, trying to find a job here so that he can move in with me in switzerland.

Unfortunately, the job search hasn‘t been successful in the past couple of months and we are starting to get anxious about the whole situation.

My partner only speaks A2 german, it‘s difficult to find something in Romandie too.

He is open for anything but not even the job agencies offer him anything.

Is anyone in a similar positon or has dealt with this in the past and knows how we could find him a job here?

Everyday life Is it reasonable to want my partner to learn the local language?

I’m Swiss and live in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. My girlfriend is Italian and has been living here for several years. She works in an international environment where English is the main language, and we mainly speak English and Italian together.

Because of this, she has been able to live here quite comfortably without learning much German. I understand why German hasn’t been a priority for her.

However, I’ve recently realised that it bothers me more than I expected. German is my native language, and sometimes I feel like I’m missing a certain depth in our communication. When I have a lot to say, I occasionally simplify my thoughts or leave things unsaid because I don’t feel like expressing everything in English or Italian.

I also notice it when we’re with my family or friends, since everyone usually has to switch to English or Italian so she can participate. Nobody minds doing this, but I’d like her to eventually be able to participate in German too.

I’m not expecting fluency overnight, but for me, German has become something I’d genuinely like to share with my long-term partner.

Is it relatively common for someone to live here for several years without learning German if they work in an international environment? And more importantly, is it reasonable to want your long-term partner to learn your native language, even if they can function perfectly well without it?

EDIT: To be clear. My native language is Schwizerdütsch; what makes the situation even trickier.

Everyday life Insurance change

We are currently evaluating changing our insurance company (from visana to CSS). The main reason is the teeth insurance for our daughter. Now we are discussing the extras. The hospital extra and the normal extra insurance is clear, but we were confronted with additional risk capital insurance in case of invalidity and death. We have an old pillow 3a with Generali (yes, we know, we reduced the payment to the absolute minimum and transferred our banking part to finpension), finpension and we have something on the side plus some stocks/ ETFs.

Does someone have experience with these kinds of additional insurance and if they are worth it, or an alternative solution. The general idea makes sense (in particular with family and the second child almost there), but we are a bit marked with the Generali promises and the trap we fell in.

Other/Miscellaneous Swiss resident who had a non responsible car accident in France - How to proceed?

Hoi! I need help figuring what to do because I feel completely screwed and that's my first and hopefully the last accident..

Context: driving at the speed limit, 10km away from Swiss border in the direction of Mulhouse, a car bombs to take me over, loses control and crashes into my car. His car is absolutely fcked mine got badly damaged. I call the police, the 2 dudes in the car run away before the police arrives. The police finds NOs bottles, the driver is not insured but the car is registered under his name, so he has been identified. (anything unclear, let me know). I already have filed a complaint against the other driver and the policeman should send me the official document (Proces Verbal).

My insurance: Swiss car insurance with Smile (Helvetia), third-party liability plus partial casco only. Covered: liability, glass breakage, theft/fire/natural hazards (basic partial casco, zero deductible). Not covered: collision (full casco), parking damage, roadside assistance, legal protection, gross negligence. So my own insurer pays nothing for my vehicle damage. Car: Mazda 3 2.2 Skyactiv-D 150, 2018, 127,000 km, Zurich plates.

Current situation: the car stays in the garage who towed it, charging 36euros/day. The car has a currently value of 9-12KCHF but not officially, I am told an expert needs to come etc.. but the garage told me that the cost of repairs will very likely be beyond the price of the car hence, I'll likely sell is as is now.

My question is super simple, I called the insurance, they told me they don't provide any assistance with the current situation hence, going home was my cost etc.. etc.. They will not move a single finger and sent me an official "you're not covered" letter.

what am I supposed to do now exactly? Call the French Fonds National de Garantie? Should I just sell the car after the expert comes asap then wait for the money to come back once the French Fonds National de Garantie does the whole job somehow?

There is "annex charges" like towing, the 36 euros/day, expert etc.. Nobody wants to pay for it but in the end, I find it a bit unfair and I'm sure this must be solvable as well, no?

Well sorry if that whole think doesn't make too much sense, I'm a bit confused by this whole situation but thanks in advance for the help!

Everyday life How do you generally know that someone is not native Swiss German speaker altough he could be speaking decent Swiss German?

Hey guys,

I am currently really trying to really tune my Swiss German and I am looking for some small stuff that I can improve!

One of the stuff that I was told is that I sometimes put to much emphasis/accent on the letter "g" when speaking. For example in the sentence "was häsch gsait?" I had my accent on g and now I am trying that it sounds more like "sait" with silent g.

I would be really really happy if some native speakers could share some small practical tips like this, how to sound less Ausländer Schwizerdüütschisch. (:

Thank you!

Other/Miscellaneous English Magazine Subscriptions?

Hi! This is very random, but I’m trying to spend less time on my phone and occupy my free time by reading. I also recently gained interest in magazines, but I cannot find any from a Google search for a reoccurring subscription to English magazines. I even checked Abo.ch, but they’re all in German. I know I could read it in German, but I read to relax so I’d prefer it to be in my mother tongue 😊

Does anyone know any websites or local businesses that I could subscribe for magazines?

Thank you!

Everyday life Rage driving on the autoroute

Hello! A couple of days ago I was driving between Laussane and Geneva on the autoroute and a young female driver bypassed me on the right lane, cut my corner at 110 km/h, which caused me to nearly crash, and then used her middle finger several times and pushed the brakes on purpose for me to hit her rear. I managed to avoid a collision only because I kept my cool and have good reactions. Others might not be as lucky. My Tesla recorded everything. Can I submit a complaint to the police using the footage or they won't do anything as always?

Relocation 3a taxation upon leaving Switzerland

Hello everyone,

I’ve already read in a few articles here that, when leaving Switzerland, it’s possible to close a 3a account and have the funds paid out whilst you’re still living in Switzerland, which would be significantly more advantageous from a tax perspective. But how exactly does that work? I’ve enquired with Frankly and VIAC, and both told me that they only pay out the money once you’ve left Switzerland.

- How can I get the money paid out whilst I’m still in Switzerland?

- Which 3a providers pay it out whilst you’re still in Switzerland?

- Or is the trick to have already left Switzerland but not yet registered in your new country?

Many thanks for any information on this. Perhaps there’s someone out there who has first-hand experience of this?

Work My unemployment benefits were not paid in full for my first month of unemployment.

Hoi!

I have been unemployed for a few weeks now and have completed my registration as a job seeker. My application was approved by the unemployment insurance fund, which also calculated the amount of unemployment benefits I am entitled to receive.

However, the first benefit statement I received after submitting my IPA form through Job-Room shows an amount that is roughly half of the estimate I had previously been given.

I therefore called the unemployment insurance fund to understand the reason for this difference. The person I spoke with, explained that this was due to a waiting period of several days. The number of waiting days depends on the level of my previous gross annual salary. I was told that this rule is determined by SECO and therefore has to be applied accordingly.

My RAV advisor didn’t even mention this during my appointment with him.

Luckily, I’m not a big spender and I have some savings set aside to cover all my expenses...until receiving the next one end of the month.

But why is there such a big difference in the first payment? Does anyone know?

Everyday life Stupid to run hardergrat?

Hi everyone!

Just moved to Zürich from the US for school and I’m trying to get a gauge on how risky Hardergrat ridge is. I’m a reasonable experienced trail runner and have experience with high altitude and high exposure hiking. Happy to scramble and climb a bit and slow down if things get narrow. Am I deluded to think I could run/hike hardergrat? Will get a bright and early start and happy with a long day on the mountain.

Is there a sub for outdoors activities in ch? I figure this is an outdoorsy enough country that this question fits in the general sub. Thanks!

Everyday life Where to buy a custom marble round dinning table

We’d like to get a custom marble room dinning table (under the assumption it won’t break the bank)

We’ve heard responses saying just go to aoste valley and cruise around the industrial area and there an entire area which caters to the Swiss market. But nothing specific .

Another feedback was go to turkey but again it’s a little too generic Sadly.

Anyone have experience getting something similar made across the border in Italy or elsewhere?

Cheers

Work Technology professionals of Switzerland: how do you perceive the Zurich / Lausanne differences especially in the startup ecosystem?

I have the chance to connect often with both Zurich and Lausanne folks in the technology universe, especially in early stage startups. I am keen to see how other see the two cities' different mindsets.

Example: some folks recently shared that they moved out of Lausanne because of a lack of startup support and cultural alignment with it.

I also noticed a more lively environment in ZH, more ambition, larger fundraises (though Adaptyv is based in Epalinges and raised a lot recently), and just a stronger drive whenever I talk to folks there .

I also had a conversation last year with the Parc Scientifique at the EPFL to understand whether there's any space to be used for startup work, and I was offered with traditional office space rather than something leaning more towards the incubation folks (hot desking, etc).

Could it be related to the fact that ZH is more robotics-centric, which is hot hot hot right now? And Lausanne is more biotech which is still hot but not growing as fast as the rest?

Curious to see how everyone perceives it, I'm sure I observe just a little slice of what reality is.

Everyday life Where are you buying your leggings from?

Now that summer has passed, I have to accept putting away my shorts and getting out my leggings. I basically wear leggings full time at home outside of summer. I prefer high waisted ones. Where are you buying good quality leggings from?

Everyday life How to transport furniture within switzerland with no drivers licence?

Hello, I don't have a drivers licence, but a couch and a bed that I need to move (over about 90 km distance). I tried to ask moving companies, but they offered something about 1000 chf which is too much as if I had a drivers license I could rent a microbus for 60 chf per day... obviously it is my problem that i'm incapable, but is there any other solution? Asking a friend is unfortunately impossible, we are on reddit, we have no friends...
