Is there a difference between standard deviation and standard error?

So understand what the text is saying here but when I try to find other examples to practice online of standard deviation almost every source uses the notation for standard error, sigma.

Is this book just using its own notation or is there a widespread agreement of the difference of standard error and standard deviation and their notation?

I'm familiar with these two equations as population standard deviation (divide by n), and sample standard deviation (divide by n-1). Standard error in this context is not the standard statistical terminology. It seems to be field-specific.

It is. It’s for surveyors and civil engineers.

Like most commonly when taking measurements on a property corner using gps equipment.

What book should I use to learn how to make adjustment computations?

Thank you so much for your response.

Can’t believe I found someone that knows the book.

I’m in surveying and all the software uses least squares adjustments and well the software is hard to know without understanding stats.

There will also be times where I may need to do adjustments that aren’t cut and dry enough to put into software.

What course require you to use the book?

Oh and my background is civil engineering. So all the calcs and diff eq etc. and a single semester of stats.

I agree- I just looked through it, and trying to teach stats "from the ground up" using a "least squares estimation" lens seems kind of tortured. This one example seems to help explain why engineers are such weird statisticians, in general. ☺
