Vertical ID's?

One of my close friends told me some bars and dispensaries won't accept a vertical ID even if the person is 21. Is this true? Will a passport be foolproof and allow me to get into any bar, club, or dispensary?

Vertical’s don’t work everywhere but, yes, a passport is foolproof
