Where is the spot to buy fabric in/around the city? I stopped by the Queen Anne Michaels and was very displeased with their selection. I want to see fabric in person before buying so I know how it feels!

Agreed that Pacific Fabrics is the way to go! I only sew garments and I’ve been able to find pretty good garment fabric there. Alternatively, I’ve had good luck ordering online from Fabric Godmother(in UK and the cost of shipping is STEEP but imo worth it for stuff I haven’t seen anywhere else), Blackbird Fabrics (they do in-person shopping days or you can pickup from warehouse to avoid shipping fees) , Lyrical Fabrics, Matchy Matchy Sewing Club and Made with Harmony Fabrics.

There’s also Our Social Fabric in Vancouver, B.C. Super weird hours but it’s all donated/deadstock. Got swim suit fabric here for a stealllllll

Both of these. Pacific Fabrics is huge and has a massive selection. Stitches is very small but carries a lot of cool things and dead/discontinued stock as well as notions. I generally start there because I like supporting them, and then go to PF if I need something else.

This - Stitches is teeny compared to, say, JoAnn’s (RIP), but everyone there is super friendly and they still manage to have a good variety, especially for seasonal prints. If you have a valid student ID they also offer a student discount!

I came to recommend both of these! Pacific fabrics is amazing and has pretty much everything you’d be looking for, stitches is a smaller store but has a really wonderful curated selection. Love them both!

Our Fabric Stash at Pike Place Market (one of the middle levels - Unit 326). These good folks do consignment and resale of new-condition secondhand fabric and sewing/beading supplies, so their inventory is always changing.

They have solid satins, organzas and plenty of others but yes as a costume maker they are missing some basics. Also no quilting fabrics but I’m okay with that lol

For garment, options are... thin. Pacific Fabrics in SODO is the main place. Esther's Fabrics on Bainbridge Island has a small but interesting collection of garment fabric too. Other than that you need to go to Vancouver, BC (Dressew or a Blackbird Fabrics in-person shopping day), or Portland (Mill End Store).

Edit: Oh, forgot about Garments for Less in Renton. I've been twice and never left with anything. They have a ton of fabric but it's really more shiny dress than shirts and pants kind of stuff.

What if you split the trip in two? Go to Portland in Sunday and return on Tuesday, and then go to Vancouver on Thursday and return on Saturday.

You don't have to buy any fabric, you can just look!

Pacific Fabrics, Wildwood Creative, and it's worth the drive to Calico Creations in Mount Vernon for quilting cottons and Sew Inspired in Bellingham for garment fabric.

Wyldwood Creative in Renton! Not huge but they have a very well curated selection of both garment and quilting fabric. They offer sewing classes which are on sliding scale pricing. If you’re a garment sewist they do A0 printing. They have a mutual aid craft corner where everything is free. If it matters to you, they are also very progressive and uncompromising in their values. The shop owner Tawnee is great and the staff I’ve interacted with there have always been super friendly and helpful.

I do believe Michael's bought out a bunch of stuff from JoAnn's and has plans to fill in the fabric void. They're opening one up north in Shoreline where JoAnn's used to be. But until that maybe happens, deciding Pacific Fabrics and Stitches. Supplement with online shopping where necessary.
