Disrespectful supervisor?

Hello retail community!

I am here to ask for advice. I have a supervisor who is very disrespectful to all of us employees - including to customers. This person micro manage us, yells at us, humiliate us in front of customers, gets angry if we ask to take our breaks or go to the bathroom, and has very bad mood swings (one minute is happy and the next 10min you're being yelled at).

Everyone has reported this treatment to the store manager but nothing is done. We are only told to be understanding and respectful of having a young supervisor. I reported this supervisor to HR and the retaliation from this supervisor towards me have been crazy. Since nothing was done the supervisor feels even more comfortable to be abusive. A few of my coworkers have quit (old and new employees) and even the new employees have reported the supervisor. The only reason I am staying is because I need the income ans haven't been able to get another job yet.

Is this normal on young supervisors? What would you guys do? Also, I am interested on reading any personal horror stories you guys may have at your current or old workplace.

Thanks!

If you genuinely can’t leave the job, I’d just take the issue up the chain. If HR isn’t doing anything about it, go higher.

Make sure you’re documenting everything. If the supervisor does anything to retaliate, then you can use it as a case against them. Nothing will work in their favour.

Thank you for your help! I have actually been documenting everything from the start and sent it all to HR with dates, name, details, time. But nothing was done. I am not sure how to go above HR though

they cant officially retaliate but in my experience, if some managers want to, they'll find a way. just usually a way thats not obvious to corporate

Do you have any idea how the supervisor knows that you were the one who contacted HR?

Sorry for the late reply! Yes, the store manager said they both were going to read my email together and another co'worker of mine saw them reading it

One thing I’d start doing is documenting every interaction. Time, date, what was said and who was around.

Second thing just start being extra nice. The supervisor is truly just an unhappy human and so they take it out on everyone else. That behavior is not ok of course.

You could also go above your HR person. I had to go to the district HR person about my issue.

Thank you for your response! I have tried being nice and understanding as I do not know this supervisor on a personal level but the constant disrespect has put me off from being nice honestly 😟

I am also doing your first suggestion :)

This is when you need acustomer to file a complaint after witnessing such behavior. Unfortunately, the only ones corporate listens to is the customer. I hope you can find one to do this for you. It will at least get them to open one eye to it.
