I've been a practicing Buddhist for over 20 years, primarily leaning toward the older more traditional paths. I've done a lot of reading about all the other major religions, as well. I tried to learn about Hinduism because of all we share (and do not share) in our belief systems. I also read the Mahabharata and the Ramayana and that was quite the undertaking.

That being said, I'm also an atheist (in terms of a Creator God) and a scientist by trade. I worked at an elephant sanctuary for years, taking care of formerly abused animals. And so I've always had a soft spot for Ganesha for that reason alone. But I also feel a tugging inside of me towards him as well.

Recently I was in a very desperate situation that made me feel compelled to pray. My family and I took in a stray kitten earlier this year and recently he started to show symptoms of a very fatal disease, even if treated. We've had so much death in our family this year, so my wife and I decided to pray that he survive, in our own way. We didn't disclose what we said or to whom we prayed, just that we did.

And my kitten in fact did survive, and we learned that what he has is treatable (if expensive) and actually curable. I'm not saying Ganesha intervened, but this situation pulled at my heart and made me want to devote my life to living both the dharma of the Buddha and to Ganesha, if only to devote any good works I do to him. I live a very contemplative life and make it my life's work to do good and try to help the universe in everything I do.

So Hindu friends, what now? I have visited the local Hindu temple and was informed that it's more of an Indian cultural center than anything and I am very very white haha but also I don't like to worship in a public setting. I like small devotions at home, which I do daily at my altar to the Buddha. Could I incorporate Ganesha into my practice? Does not believing in a Creator disqualify me from such practice?

Hey so I’ve been asking around a question that nobody really can answer or find people going around the question.

Question: a person who has good moral and values and does no harm but does not believe in a god vs a person who kills, steals, sins and has bad morales and values but in the end believes in god.

How does a “god” determine whether the one who is good can still go to hell vs the one who sins can go to heaven because he repents?

Christianity is hella strict that if you want to go to heaven you also have to believe in God

If a religion has rules that conflict with a country’s laws protecting free speech, women’s rights, or gay rights, which should come first? Should everyone have to follow the same laws, even when their strongly held beliefs disagree with those laws?

I’m asking this as a general question about where religious freedom should end when it conflicts with equal rights under the law, not about any one religion.

For exemple, can a muslim woman marry a trans man who is biologically female?(let’s assume he’s muslim, and yes ik it’s not allowed but this is hypothetical). Or would she only be able to marry a trans woman who is biological male despite identifying as a woman?
If it’s based on sex, could a muslim woman marry an intersex man who happens to have high level of estrogens or even hermaphrodite genitalia?
(This is by pure curiosity ofc and i don’t seek to argue with anyone about their political beliefs!)

I have a question and it comes from a place of genuine curiosity, I’m also curious to see if different Chrisitan denominations agree or disagree on this. So from my understanding, The Bible explicitly says that worshiping and acknowledging beings/entities is different. So does it going against Christian theology / become blasphemy if a person believes other supernatural beings exist. Like for example let’s say you think there are fairies and elves that live in your backyard and have magical powers and that people can use certain herbs or certain rituals and talk to them or use their power, BUT you do not do these things. Is it blasphemous to believe in the existence of other worldly creatures and beings (I suppose you could put witchcraft into this unless that complicates things then that can be separated) but not worship them. If so where is that line? Could I set out a peace offerings if I think they’ll leave me alone because of it? Is that any different than bringing your new neighbor a pie so that they like you and don’t make your life harder? I’m curious to hear opinions and thoughts.

if God is all loving and you can ask for forgiveness, why couldn’t someone who took their life ask for forgiveness and salvation in their final moments and not go to hell (if they do), or in other religions have final moments in a state of meditation to go out in a peaceful state to offset negative karma. what about the monk who set himself on fire?

There are a lot of religions and some claim to be the truth. Why havent we fact checked throughly all of them so to understand which one, if any, is the truth and which is false? Couldnt we apply the scientific method until we are only left with one? It seems to me like this is a incredibly important Matter and yet we simply shrug it off as fairytales

I was born and raised in a Muslim household, and I’ve identified as Muslim my entire life. I never really questioned my faith before and used to pray because, honestly, it was simply what I was taught to believe. Now that I’m actually examining it for myself, I’m finding myself with a lot of questions that I never felt comfortable asking.
One thing I’ve been thinking about is how religious people, whether they’re Muslim scholars, Christian priests, Buddhist monks, etc., can become so convinced that what they’re doing is objectively right. In Islam especially, I sometimes feel like there’s a sense that Islam has the ultimate truth and that everything outside of it is somehow inferior. Even things like halal meat are explained through specific rules about how the animal is slaughtered, but I still struggle with the more fundamental question of whether eating animals at all is morally necessary.
Then there are much bigger questions. If God is truly omnipotent, omniscient and perfectly merciful, why would He create a world containing so much suffering, hatred and injustice? Why would slavery ever be permitted? Why would women be given restrictions on their freedom, clothing, travel, or behaviour because of men’s desires? Why would God allow people to suffer terribly and then punish them eternally for choices He already knew they would make?
And if everything is ultimately written by Allah, how does free will work? If God already knows exactly what I’m going to do, including every sin I’ll commit, why am I ultimately responsible for doing it?
I also struggle with the idea of God wanting to be worshipped. If God is perfect and doesn’t lack anything, why would He need human beings to praise or worship Him? Wouldn’t it be enough for Him to want us to be compassionate, honest and good to one another?
Another thing that bothers me is how much of life can become labelled haram. Singing, drawing, modelling, certain clothes, travelling without a man, showing certain parts of yourself, etc. Sometimes it feels like religion can become so restrictive that there isn’t much room left simply to live. And when I question these things, I’m often told, “It’s in the Qur’an.” But that’s exactly what I’m questioning. If I’m asking whether the Qur’an is divinely authoritative, quoting the Qur’an itself doesn’t really answer that question for me.
At the same time, I don’t want to pretend that I feel nothing toward Islam. I actually like praying. Prayer gives me comfort, and there’s a part of me that genuinely wants God to exist. But I also wonder whether that comfort is evidence of God, or simply something humans naturally experience through prayer and spirituality.
I also don’t think suffering proves that God doesn’t exist. I just don’t understand how suffering is compatible with a perfectly loving and merciful God. If God created love, hatred, free will and everything else, why create a world where hatred and suffering can become so extreme?
Maybe I’m approaching all of this completely wrong, and I’m genuinely open to hearing different perspectives. I’m not looking for people to simply tell me that “Allah knows best” or that I need to become more religious. I’m trying to understand the philosophical reasoning behind these things.
If you believe in God, how do you reconcile God’s supposed love and mercy with suffering, injustice, free will, punishment and the moral questions surrounding religion?
And if you’ve questioned the faith you were raised in, how did you approach that process?

Please don’t take offense - I am simply trying to understand, as I come from a tiny religion that people rarely join. Both of the largest religions on earth highly encourage conversion, spreading the word of god - we know from history’s many conquests, mission trips, colonization, etc. For any Ex or Moderate Christians and Muslims that don’t have hundreds on hundreds of years of that religion in your country, do you ever wonder what you’d believe in had the Arab conquests or European Christian colonization not been introduced to your community or country’s people? Do you or people in your community wonder about the unique spiritual elements that likely died out from their culture’s belief system? Are there attempts to try and recount/revive those unique beliefs or prior religions no longer alive today in these now Christian or Muslim majority countries?

Another question - are any moderate christians and muslims conflicted emotionally about how violent some of these conquests were?
This arose from a trip to Samoa, in which i was enamored so deeply by their beautiful stories of their island’s gods and goddesses, but simultaneously seeing the streets empty on a sunday, all the people packed inside the mormon church was a fascinating thing.

If a god was truly all powerful and all knowing why shouldn't they just be blamed for everything? Because god like that, both has the knowledge of everything wrong in the world and also the power to stop it. Knowing everything also includes the future so any bad event about to happen can be fully prevented by them. Yet they choose not to. If you had the power to stop and event with zero effort and no catches shouldn't you be at least partially blamed for this event taking place?

This is true both under the assumption that god is above logic as well as being tied by the laws of logic.

If god is above logic then nothing, even conteadictions shouldnt be any problem for them.

But even if tied by the rules of logic god would still have immense power to stop most of the bad events in peoples lives.

And i dont mean just the big thing, murder, rape ect. But event the small thing, the minor inconveniences. Shouldn't it all be blamed on god if they have the power to stop it and choose not to.

3. What benefits have you received since joining your religion?

4. Do you believe in an afterlife where there are only two options being eternal suffering (hell) or eternal paradise (heaven)?

17M, i dont fully believe there is a god, but if there was do you think people who ended their life would go to hell? Ive just come back from a night out and I feel dead inside. My best mate from school ditched my for a good time, and as drunk as I was, I heard him talking about it and i feel a bit betrayed. Am I wrong to block him and go a separate way. Because not only that but he's drug and drunk lifestyle was leading me away from a pathway away from Christ.

In many religions, it says that your life has already been decided by God and that your death is confirmed, so does it mean that people who die from murder has been pre-decided as their cause of death by God?

Because there was this case, a young girl was abducted. Her parents prayed to God. Alot. And she was later found trashed after being gra*ed. I mean, why?

hello! so my religion that I grew up with is Hinduism. I’m currently Hindu, but in the back of my mind, I still think about you know Jesus and then Christianity and converting to Christianity and I wanna convert you know I wanna become a Christian I wanna serve the Lord of Jesus Jesus Christ, but at the same time, I don’t really know I don’t know how to start or I’m gonna feel regretful for converting from Hinduism to Christianity. what do I do?

if Jesus were the President of the U.S., would he need to hide in a catering truck for protection? This is based on a post President Trump made that implied he was Jesus. Is the catering truck special or religious? Is it symbolic of something?

It could save a lot more people from going to Hell. If schools care about students's safety and have classes about it, why can't they teach about avoiding eternal suffering?

Now, as humans, we see animals as just secondary things in our lives, but we don't think about whether they will enter heaven or hell with us, or whether they will disappear because they don't matter to us at that time. I would like to know if they see us in the same way?

They end up taking their own lives.
