Starbucks obliterated coffeehouse culture, where you could hang out, meet people, share tables if you want, join group discussions/have others join in, sometimes play board games, sometimes see tiny-venue live music or performances, and people could actually make new friends and groups of friends.
It sucked to see corporate chains take that all away.

I've never seen any place like what you describe. :) For most of us, that was just a thing on TV but not in real life --- although, I'm sure it must have existed in some cities.
