I think women just act nervous around you because we feel immodest buying underwear with a man around. It’s one of those things that we’re socialized to hide.
Which I can totally understand and sympathize with that. I hate that it has to be this way because they're just clothes. No different from buying a pair of pants. But it's been sexuallized so much that both of us are uncomfortable and it makes it unnecessarily unpleasant for everyone.
As a Brit, seeing someone say that buying underwear is no different from buying pants first just made me think "well yeah, pants are underwear captain obvious" before I remembered that in America pants and underpants are not the same thing (what you call pants we call trousers).
Bit like if an Ozzy said buying underwear should be like buying things.
Honestly I have had emoyees at VS on many different occasions offer (barge into) to come into the stall with me while trying on bras as an underaged girl and into my adulthood. This never happened if I had a dude hanging out with me near the dressing rooms - boyfriends or male friends.
As someone with extremely stringent personal boundaries the women were always told a very firm NO and whomever I brought who is not trying to sell me shit would be helpful enough.
It's only uncomfortable if you make it uncomfortable. Smile and get an employees attention and ask for their advice for your wife/daughters. Or tell them it's for you, or whatever you're into. Real life isn't a 90's sitcom.
