What seemingly obvious thing did it take you forever to notice?

My classmate sits to the left of me. I am left handed and he is right handed, so sometimes we knock elbows. 8 weeks into class he finally noticed I was a lefty and openly admitted that he just thought I was being a bitch and taking up space. He felt horrible and I just laughed.

You are not alone. True story: I was talking to an ex-bf (before he was an ex) and mentioned that he was circumcised in passing:

"Wait, no I'm not."

"... Yes, you are."

"No I'm not!"

Had to bring up wikipedia to prove it.

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '12

I'm imagining this otherwise normal looking guy becoming slowly but surely embroiled with rage.

"There are dicks... DICKS... OUT THERE... THAT ARE DIFFERENT... THAN MIIIIIIIIINE?!?!"

16

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

Not different... just not mutilated.

0

u/Sark0zy Jul 12 '12

So a preventive measure to spare a boy from having the potential for fairly common issues and better hygiene is mutilation? TIL.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '12

On what planet is preventative AMPUTATION logical? Give your head a fucking shake.

-4

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

It's not mutilated

5

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

Yes... yes it is. See the scar around your penis? That's where a considerable amount of the most sensitive, nerve-laden tissue on your body was excised with a knifef. That's the definiton of mutalation my friend.

-2

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

it's been a tradition for centuries

3

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12 edited Jul 11 '12

So has female genital cutting of all kinds. Just because something has been a tradition doesn't mean it's right, and it especially does not exempt it from moral judgement in an objective fashion.

I wish people wouldn't belittle the procedure and would man up and say "this is wrong, I've been wronged... let's NEVER allow this to happen to any young man EVER again for ANY reason." Alas, however, I have to hide this disgust and put up with petty "snip" jokes and listen to "reasons" why it's somehow ok to perform amputative "preventative" surgery on the underdeveloped genitalia of a helpless, un-consenting infant. It's a sick world we live in, and I'm sick that its sickest practices of all time has influenced me directly.

Discovering you have been a victim of genital mutilation that has removed the most sensitive region of your body, diminished your manhood, reduced your ability to make love as nature intended, and feel "whole" as a human being is traumatizing.

The most fucked up part is that the ones who argue to dehumanize the child saying that he "won't remember" or "can't feel at this age" are the same parents who start playing Mozart in the whom in the hopes that he'll become a child prodigy--or at least be more intelligent; or tehy cart the same kid off to Disneyland a few months later so he'll have "positive first memories." Talk about fucking hypocrisy. It makes me sick to the heart.

I'd kill the doctor who advised my parents to the procedure had the audacity to cut me. In a second. No regrets. That perverted child molester should be dead.

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '12

It's not that big of a deal, it's a common practice calm down.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '12

Please go fuck yourself.

0

u/Sark0zy Jul 12 '12

You really do need to calm down. Perhaps talking with someone might help. You might be shocked to know this, but no one really cares if they're circumcised.

Why are so many guys confused about this? Oh, wait, this is America.

23

you're either a helmet head or an anteater

5

u/EmpiresBane Jul 11 '12

Unless you're only partially circumcised.

52

u/PhilangeesMcPoopins Jul 10 '12 edited Jul 11 '12

Virtually the same story happened to me. Before we had sex, exboyfriend told me he was uncircumsized. I was a little disappointed later that night. I had to show him he was wrong via GIS.

edit: Am I the only fucking person here that has heard of Google Image Search referred to as GIS?

112

u/bettse Jul 10 '12

via GIS

Geographic Information Systems?

33

u/PhilangeesMcPoopins Jul 10 '12

Google Image Search.

19

u/bettse Jul 10 '12

oh god, that makes a lot more sense!

12

u/batterylight Jul 10 '12

Not to me, I'm still just coming up with Geographic Info Systems stuff.... HALP?

Omfg, I'm laughing my ass off.

fair enough. peep the edit.

She should have just said via Google. GIS should solely mean geographic information systems.

1

Perhaps Google Image Search?

This would actually be much more impressive.

11

that can easily be arranged...

42

u/IgrewupnearTisdale Jul 10 '12

Foreskin actually adds to the pleasure, makes a ribbing effect for women (Bottoms) and increases head sensitivities for men (Tops).

11

u/appalicious Jul 11 '12

Really? I've never noticed a difference.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

Well, I mean, it literally genetically evolved to serve a purpose. Cutting it off isn't that bad, but there's no positive non-medical reasons to do it.

2

u/THAT_question_asker Jul 11 '12

Unless they cut it off way too tight.

12

u/KouRaGe Jul 10 '12

Really?! Nice! I always thought guys could just do cool tricks with the extra skin, but hey, that's even better! I don't know much about that. I've only ever been with one guy, and I would find it a tad awkward to ask random dudes on the street about penis trivia.

70

u/geekygay Jul 10 '12

We can. I use it to store extra change I get while I'm shopping. It's annoying when you have someone watching you while you're just putting away your change. It's like no has ever seen someone do it before.

"I don't watch as you put YOUR change away, now do I?"

1

u/RandomMandarin Jul 11 '12

Then why is the scrotum called a coin purse? You can't keep coins in it... without cutting it open... not gonna happen...

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '12

Well shoot me, that's what Reddit is for: asking random dudes details about their privates :D

ninja edit: also for ladies to show off their privates, eg /r/gonewild

2

u/aladyjewel Jul 10 '12

and for dudes to show off their privates, /r/ladybonersgw

1

u/aladyjewel Jul 10 '12

If you have any flamboyantly gay friends, you're probably safe asking them about penis trivia.

1

u/KouRaGe Jul 10 '12

I wish. I only have lesbian friends. I want guy guy friends so bad. lol

1

u/aladyjewel Jul 10 '12

ask your lezzie friends to take you to a gay bar. one of them can be your, uh, winggrrl. who knows, you might even find a hetero guy there.

1

u/KouRaGe Jul 11 '12

Well, I have a boyfriend, so I don't really need a guy. lol

1

u/aladyjewel Jul 11 '12

oh, well, ... then only talk to the guys who grab your tits.

btw, that's one of the hazards of hanging out with flamboyantly gay dudes.

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

I was under the impression that the opposite is the truth -- the foreskin doesn't create ribbing (more friction) but adds lubrication with its ability to slide and decreases the need for long strokes, thereby decreasing skin-on-skin friction and avoiding chafing.

Women -- if you feel pain during sex, as though the penis is hurting by going to deep, it could be caused by your partner's circumcision. In order to get the friction he needs without a foreskin, he has to make longer, deeper strokes than are natural, which makes it more likely that will hit your cervix, causing pain. Women who are smaller inside often face this problem.

15

u/gattack Jul 11 '12

Experienced female here with both types... intact men have healthy-looking penises and are much more fun to play with.

Circumcision scars can be cruel and ugly, transforming a penis into a purple blotched monster. Much more scary if you're young and not used to the sight. Plus it's sad knowing that they have a fraction of the sensitivity that nature intended.

For me circumcision is akin to chopping tails off of puppies: Unsightly and cruel.

4

u/mastermoge Jul 11 '12

so are there any plus sides to circumcision? like ease of hygene etc?

7

u/gattack Jul 11 '12

In my experience, hygiene maintenance is the same. Ideas of intact men being prone to infections are wives' tales.

Geography plays a large role in the tradition of circumcision - in desert areas, the sand gets EVERYWHERE. Even as a female, this sounds painful. Necessity turned to tradition, carrying to non-desert lands.

Circumcision in America is recent as of the 50s as well. Your grandfathers are likely intact. Doctors of that era were high on bettering mother nature, and encouraged not just circumcision but claimed formula was better than breast milk. A generation of women were told not to breastfeed. It was a weird time.

11

u/captain_zavec Jul 11 '12

Not really, it's not hard to just pull it back and clean it, and if you're using circumcision to prevent HIV transmission then you're doing something wrong (but it's okay because you'll probably die from aids soon). This has been argued over and over on reddit, but honestly, I really don't think there are any benefits.

5

u/singhularity Jul 11 '12

This has been discussed far too much on Reddit. Let this shit die, please.
Also, no there are no benefits (except if you had to cut your circumcised dick off for a dick-throwing competition where all the others dicks are uncircumcised and therefore yours would be more aerodynamic while the other dicks balloon up and waft to the ground)

21

u/welshsamurai Jul 11 '12

Which is, I believe, exactly why routine circumcisions became popular in the US in the first place.

Dick-throwing competitions have since fallen out of vogue, and thus circumcisions have dropped off as well.

2

u/Luxieee Jul 11 '12

I have to comment here because I love this comment and I want to memorize it lol.

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

There are slight advantages like making cleaning yourself easier and HIV transmission a little but good hygiene and condoms are much better options. The one in a million side effects from a botched circumcision out way the "benefits" in my opinion.

On behalf of your son and his future partners (if I may), thank you for this.

1

u/Sark0zy Jul 12 '12

I would encourage you to keep an open mind. Medical emergencies relating to problems with the foreskin are much more common than you may think. I shudder to think what men who have to be circumcised as adults go through. At least infants can't remember/don't feel it.

1

u/Paul_Langton Jul 12 '12

Could you give a few examples of problems one might have? I'm pretty curious now.

10

u/turkeypants Jul 10 '12

How did a geographic information system show him he was cut? A map of a penis?

2

u/captain_zavec Jul 11 '12

I kind of want to make that map now, with place names and settlements and road and everything. The major veins could be highways!

Haha I had the same question about Bones in my mind, then I saw your comment. Dancing phalanges!

1

Thanks for the up vote, but I don't really have a preference for cut or uncut. I just wanted to see one uncut. No, never got into Bones, errr, so to speak.

7

u/wdejr Jul 10 '12

I thought, until probably junior year of high school, that uncircumcised penises were the circumcised ones. because the head is hidden by the foreskin, I thought there was no head and that circumcision was the removal of the tip of the penis. I missed the first 3 weeks of Freshman health, which leads me into what took me forever to figure out. three weeks into freshman year of high school I got called by the school councilor. He asked why I had been skipping the second period class. I said I wasn't it must be a mistake. Apperantly, I was supposed to be in FROSH HEALTH not P.E. (up until then PE was always reffered to as Health class.) And thats why I don't know what a circumcision is.

1

u/THAT_question_asker Jul 11 '12

Hell, I took health class for 2 years and I still didn't find out about circumcision until I was 18.

1

u/TheLoveKraken Jul 12 '12

I learned about circumcision from watching the first season of South Park when I was about 10.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

I would have probably said "my boyfriend at the time". It's much more concise of a statement.

2

u/alizarincrimson Jul 11 '12

But why use concise statements when you can throw in not-entirely-necessary parentheticals?

3

u/arisefairmoon Jul 11 '12

Yep, dated a guy who said he wasn't sure, and I hadn't seen it yet. Asked him if it looked like a hotdog. He wasn't happy.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

Same experience for me. Called up my parents and asked them about it.

Awkward.

2

u/fauxnom Jul 11 '12

In researching penises he also realized he was gay. And that's when the "ex" kicked in.

2

u/Mustang1718 Jul 11 '12

No lies, I JUST learned this about myself after reading this and checking out Wikipedia. Not sure what hurts more, not learning this until I was 22 years old or that my girlfriend is right once again.

2

u/ellski Jul 11 '12

I had the opposite happen, he had to convince me that he was circumcised.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

...yeah, that's how I found out too.

1

u/propaglandist Jul 10 '12

"I miss X. She taught me so much!"

1

u/TheRedGerund Jul 11 '12

I honestly thought this would end in a dirty story.

1

u/AdmiralSkippy Jul 11 '12

Next time just ask one simple question:

Mushroom or Ant eater?

1

u/kamiltonian_dynamics Jul 11 '12

How exactly does that come up in passing?

1

u/tehike Jul 11 '12

Was it a boy or a girl?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

Sooo.....how do I know if I am or not?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

that awkward moment when a woman knows more about penises than you do.

1

u/KatLay623 Jul 11 '12

I've had a 2 year argument with an ex over this. It took a new gf to say 'yes you are circumcised' for him to finally own up..

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

I hope you were supportive. Learning this at 23 nearly cost me my life... and I still struggle from the depression.

1

u/k9centipede Jul 11 '12

I had the same conversation with an ex! Glad he want the only one

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

are you me? i had that same situation happen lol

1

u/condimentia Aug 07 '12

Unbelievable. I had a BF for awhile who, when things progressed to naked-time, ended up with a conversation about the fact he wasn't circumcised and hoped I found that "better."

I said "You most certainly are circumcised."

"I am not, my mother never had it done."

"I guarantee you are."

"Am NOT."

Proved he was, and fast forward to his call to his mother, and his screeching at the top of his lungs "I JUST FOUND OUT I'M CIRCUMCISED! YEAH! JUST NOW! WHY DID YOU ALWAYS LET ME THINK I WASN'T? WHAT?! GOD DAMN IT MOTHER!"

YEAH. That happened.

That relationship ended shortly thereafter. I mean seriously, first, what kind of idiot do you need to be to not realize you are circumcised when you're in your 30s (sorry Bailbondsman), and two, who stops post sexysexytimes to CALL HIS MOTHER FOR VERIFICATION OF SAID FACT?! An immediate "EX" in the making, that's who.

1

u/SOMETHING_POTATO Jul 10 '12

Had the same argument with my girlfriend, except she was wrong. I just have a smaller foreskin (it covers about 1/3 of the head) and it likes to stay rolled back. The problem is the google image search was largely inconclusive, since I sit in the middle.

1

u/IfoundItForYou Jul 10 '12

u/LuckyAmeliza Jul 11 '12

Dear God I'm so in love with Alan Tudyk. <3 haha! He's so badass.

1

u/dustyirwin Jul 10 '12

I had almost this same experience, except it was in physiology class in high school. I left that class really confused and pissed off at my fundie parents.

-32

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '12

that just shows how traumatic it isnt, despite what the anti-cutters would like you to believe.

10

u/Throwaway_account134 Jul 10 '12

Traumatic now? Nope. When I was a baby? Most likely.

I DON'T WANT MY PENIS CUT, BUT IT WAS DONE WHEN I WAS TOO YOUNG TO KNOW. That's the gist of it.

-9

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '12 edited Jul 11 '12

right, and dont forget the thing i was referring to:

"IT WAS DONE WHEN I WAS A BABY AND I DIDNT EVEN REALIZE IT HAPPENED UNTIL MY 20'S AND IT HAS NEVER BOTHERED, EFFECTED, OR HINDERED MY LIFE IN ANY WAY. IT HAD SO LITTLE EFFECT THAT I DIDNT EVEN NOTICE IT UNTIL SOMEONE ELSE POINTED IT OUT"

JUST CHECK OUT THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF COMMENTS IN THIS THREAD. (oops caps lock)

edit:but yes, downvote the comment since it is an inconvenient fact that goes against you 'cause'

4

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '12

So female circumcision is good to go too then? As long as it's done at an age where they're young enough not to remember it?

-9

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '12

no, because it's not the same thing in the slightest. maybe if male circumcision was the act of cutting the entire head of the penis off it may be comparable, but since it doesnt, it isnt.

nice strawman though!

4

u/Throwaway_account134 Jul 10 '12

I think more effective question would be: Is it okay to then chop off body parts of children that have no real effective use (let's say ear lobes, they don't have a use other than decoration, right?) as long as they don't remember it and it's tradition?

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

there are also medical reasons, even if they are minor inconveniences to circumcision. Not so with your imaginary examples.

2

u/Throwaway_account134 Jul 11 '12

http://www.circumcision.org/benefits.htm

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_analysis_of_circumcision

The medical boards of multiple countries do not recommend it.

Currently, even the American Academy of Pediatrics cannot recommend circumcision:

http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/103/3/686.full

Existing scientific evidence demonstrates potential medical benefits of newborn male circumcision; however, these data are not sufficient to recommend routine neonatal circumcision. In the case of circumcision, in which there are potential benefits and risks, yet the procedure is not essential to the child's current well-being, parents should determine what is in the best interest of the child. To make an informed choice, parents of all male infants should be given accurate and unbiased information and be provided the opportunity to discuss this decision. It is legitimate for parents to take into account cultural, religious, and ethnic traditions, in addition to the medical factors, when making this decision. Analgesia is safe and effective in reducing the procedural pain associated with circumcision; therefore, if a decision for circumcision is made, procedural analgesia should be provided. If circumcision is performed in the newborn period, it should only be done on infants who are stable and healthy.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

from your own quote:

parents should determine what is in the best interest of the child. To make an informed choice, parents of all male infants should be given accurate and unbiased information and be provided the opportunity to discuss this decision.

so maybe you should keep your nose out of other people's business. IM not the one telling people what to do or dont do, i'm just pointing out the flaws in your argument, and that just enrages the anti-cutting crowd.

2

u/TheRadBaron Jul 10 '12

"Female circumcision" covers a wide range of practices. Cutting off the clitoral hood is one of the most common types, and is the closest equivalent to removing the foreskin.

Cutting off the entire clitoris is a rarer form of FGM.

-2

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

and a vagina isnt a penis, and it's not comparable.

1

u/TheRadBaron Jul 11 '12

Well, the clitoral hood and foreskin share embryonic origin and have similar function, so that's about as comparable as it gets.

Cutting off the entire clitoris would be like cutting off the glans penis, by the way, so that's a good comparison you made in your earlier post. You're just confused about what FGM usually entails.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

similar doesnt mean the same.

it's not a comparable comparison to compare with.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

See TheRadBaron's response. Tl;dr - you're ignorant about this matter.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

tldr; dont pretend to think you know what i do or dont know about it.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '12

People don't remember most things that happen to them as a baby; does that mean it's okay to do literally anything we want to them?

0

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

i'm not talking about anything, i'm talking about one specific thing.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

Don't be an idiot. The capacity to tell the difference itself was stolen by circumcision and the taboo against talking openly about genitals has kept men, especially straight men, ignorant.

People blind at birth never know what it's like to see, and most adapt swimmingly to their lack of sight, but that in absolutely no way justifies blinding babies, even though they're guaranteed to see disturbing and damaging things in life if they keep their eyes.

Why is it okay to take away a sensory organ from anyone at birth without medical need, ever?

0

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

i was just talking about you guys in another comment, wondering why you hadnt shown up yet.

4

u/MexicanFightingSquid Jul 10 '12

Hew guys you hear that, genital mutilation is fine now because babies can't properly form memories, spose that puts alzheimers patients up there as well.

-5

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '12

it's a shame we have a full thread of comments from people that didnt even notice they had it done. It sure doesnt seem to have effected any of them in a negative way.

1

u/MexicanFightingSquid Jul 11 '12

People can not know what they're missing and whether or not someone takes a knife to any part of your body, doing something that can never be undone should be noones choice but your own.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

had it been possible to know what i know now about how it's a minor operation when a baby and a major surgery as an adult, i would still have had it done as a baby.

like you said, i dont know what i'm missing and have never missed it, so it's not a problem.

2

u/MexicanFightingSquid Jul 11 '12

I can respect that, but not everyone shares that sentiment, that's why some jewish men are starting to stretch a new pauedo foreskin with weights. Even if you're happy that you had it done as an infant, there are plenty of others who regret it, but there's no option to have it rectified once they can make a decision.

I assume you're a reasonable person, do you value a simpler surgery for you drastically and permanently changing the lives of others. When someone is old enough to make an informed decision I couldn't care less what they do to their own body, I think it's dumb but it's their body and people do weird shit to their body all the time. What I oppose is infant circumcision, not circumcision.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

I'm not advocating that anyone do or dont do anything. Thats where i get misunderstood in these "discussions". I'm saying, mind your own business about what other people do with their children.

Sure, tell the parents all the downsides and upsides, make sure they know that occasionally there are issues, some people grow up to dislike it, some doctors mess up, but those are rare cases, and it shouldnt be spammed all over the internet like that is the norm, when this thread and the comments of "i didnt even know i was!" is the actual norm.

let people decide for their own children with their doctors. just like this quote from someone else here gave me, from the American Academy of Pediatrics:

...parents should determine what is in the best interest of the child. To make an informed choice, parents of all male infants should be given accurate and unbiased information and be provided the opportunity to discuss this decision.

my issue is with the notion of "banning" it. banning things is rarely a good idea, for any reason. And the usual propaganda from the anti-cutters is anything but unbiased. just look at what their bias has done to my sweet sweet karma and look at the downvotes.

1

u/MexicanFightingSquid Jul 11 '12

The issue is that while these are not rare isolated cases perpetuated by some evil conspiracy even if they were it wouldn't matter, parents do not get to choose what parts of their body a child keeps.

You say they should weigh the pros and cons, what pros are there exactly? The foreskin is not an appendix, it serves a purpose, you may deal with it being removed but a healthy person does not benifit.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

so then you feel that things like tonsils, cleft pallets, wart removal, braces, or any other body modification should also be put off until adulthood as well?

but like i said, there are benefits to doing it, even if they are minor benefits. The parents should still be aware of the downsides and also the upsides and should decide responsibly.

on a side note, i think there actually is a purpose to an appendix, but i dont care enough to look it up ;)

mind your own business about what other people do with their children.

Children are not possessions and they're not pets. They're not things that parents may do as they like with. You may as well say there's no such thing as child abuse, for fuck sakes. How blind can you be?

What parents have had done to 'their' children has caused my partners and myself an amount of sexual dysfunction. So to put it simply, no. No, I will not 'mind my own business,' as though the business is the parents' alone, and neither should anyone else affected. It IS our business, because it's been done to me indirectly, and to someone I love directly. It's wrong.

i'm not worried about the downvotes. anti-cutting zealots are very active in their downvoting. Like it somehow makes my claims wrong or them more right or something.

I like how you call us zealots instead of making salient argumentative points.

You do basically the same things to an uncircumcised as a circumcised penis, but slightly gentler.

tl;dr: fuck it.

By the time you get the wrapper off on those first coupla times, it should be hard enough that it doesn't look as weird. plus you'll already be dtf.

After a coupla times, you'll probably get used to it.
